I know nothing about running a forum, but before the board purge happens, would it be possible to access the data to back it all up? It sounds like "Peter" knows about such things and is eager to help. Even if threads are dormant, it would still be such a shame to lose them.

Here's the deal behind the archive failure. The forum is created from a database. With 6,000 members and 400,000 posts it's probably quite a sizeable one, hence the purge. My plan was to use a tool to 'visit' each page and save it as an old fashioned HTML file which I could host. I vastly underestimated the scale of this task and pulled the plug after growing concerned that I'd overload the forum while trying to save it

 

Really, the only practical way of saving the archive is for the management to export a copy of the database. It could be hosted on another server as a read only version of the forum, or simply stored away on a floppy disk in someone's cupboard so the posts aren't lost forever. I have recommended that to Mr H.

Minor problem however, I appear to have lost the "quote" and "edit" buttons on posts and "post reply" has disappeared to a little hyperlink at the bottom of the board. Any ideas?

^ same here, I thought it was just me. Can't affect everyone though as I've seen recent posts that have been edited. I'm using firefox if that's all relevant.

It's like that when you're not signed in, but when I sign in everything shows up OK.

If you're using Adblock, disable it on this site and refresh the page, see if that brings it back.

I have firefox, the buttons were replaced by text but they reappeared today. Just for info; I don't want a retarded 'who has the best browser' argument.

Thankfully (in a way) I had a mental week at work last week so wasn't on AS at all so never even noticed anything was amiss.

 

Hope this deals with the spam problem once and for all, although on another forum I frequent the spammers have taken to spamming in proper threads rather than creating their own which makes it much harder to avoid, at least it didn't get to that level here (that I noticed anyway.)

 

Anyway, mainly posting as a lurker who's get's their daily fix of shite on here but rarely posts, so thought I'd better pop my head round the door to stop me being kicked off!!
