Would be great to go....And to the forthcoming bike event too....Sadly, recent surgery precludes me from driving or walking any great distance at the moment....Would be grateful for any pics any of you care to post....Particularly of the BX Club stand! 8)

Really heaved off that I wont be there as me & Jon tried a couple of times to organise a BX one. Zero staff at work means its straight A shifts from tomorrow to Tuesday. I shall be very knackered, but able to afford Christmas thanks to the overtime.

Friday and Saturday. Will be on the Allegro Club stand which I had nothing to do with the organisation of.

For the first time ever there will be a stand dedicated to the Rover 800 - a lovely mk1 saloon, a mk2 Coupe an ex-Buckingham Palace mk2 saloon and a genuine mk1 traffic police car.

A very kindly fellow supersport owner has given me a ticket and a car park pass for tomorrow (sat)...camera batteries charged and a bit of grub to pack....it's gonna be a long day. :D

Currently travelling home from a very long and even busier day at the NEC, Good to meet Dieselnutjob, Wat and Dollywobbler there as well as Captain Slow and i did spy Betaboy and Tony_H although i never spoke as they were chatting to people.

Also spend some time chatting to the Practical Classics guys who seem like jolly nice chaps and spunking too much cash on the £1 car brochure stall.

All in all a very joyful day.

Yes, that was a good day out, if bloody long.

It took just under 2 hours to get there [speed restrictions, BBC WM, idiot lorry drivers] and 2 hours 30 to get back because of the utterly SHIT weather. The foot traffic seemed really heavy for a Friday, perhaps - as Ian remarked - everyone thought they'd go today 'because it'll be quiet'. There were also shitloads of vile school kids shrieking back and forth because of some kind of HE fair in the adjoining halls. I managed to embarass one of the corridor staff who seemed surprised I wasn't following them in there. 'No love, I'm 28' seemed to suffice.

I've taken to saving an NEC Classic pot in between shows, because I tend to spuff coin big style when I get in there. Despite the ticket increase [again] I blew most of my £120 budget on model shite of the highest caliber - firstly on a 1:43 scale model of that mental Peugeot 806 touring car that raced once at Spa in 1995. Later I returned to the same stand and coughed for a 1:18 scale BX 4TC that I knocked the [same] seller down to £50. The most money I've ever spent on a model, then. Unless I can find an Otto Peugeot 405 Mi16 for less than £3,000,000 any time soon, this will probably be the only Otto Mobile I buy because of storage reasons. I have too many 1:43 models and Dinky shite as it is. I had my 'most money spent on a car book' moment last year when I bought Wim Oude Weernink's La Lancia, which to be fair is bloody brilliant but not £70 better than Brian Long's 'Lancia : Cars & Saloons'. I did manage to keep my wallet in place when walking past Chater's, mind.

Be warned though - there was a communications blackout late into the afternoon and early evening. Phil tried to get hold of me and couldn't because the network bandwidth was getting battered. We eventually met up on the BX stand that Dollywobbler was looking after, withTrig [with FATHA_TRIGG and WIFE_TRIGG] following suit. Trig managed to lose his dad briefly, too. Taking the advice of Seth and DNJ, I parked in Brum Central station and saved myself a fiver on parking - although Phil later smashed that by simply waiting until the car parking staff had gone home and driving out of the lot for free, the git.

You can't have any photos, because I couldn't be arsed lugging my camera into and out of a venue with crap lighting and selfish car bores walking into every shot you try and set up. So there.

Don't remind me about the car park!, muggins here paid the £10 when i arrived so i didn't have to queue later on only to find that the barrier was up on the way out and i didn't have to pay after all.

Also all my photos look like burly shit.

Beware of the £1 a brochure stall, It will leave you skint, and yes, that is a Tagora brochure!

My £1 a brochure NEC Classic Car Show bargains by Trigger's Retro Road Tests!, on Flickr

That's an impressive haul. I had a two 305 estate brochures off the same bloke.

That Starter 1:43 Peugeot 806 in full:

The door mirrors are on that plastic strap around the model itself. From the number of price reductions on the box I got the impression the seller had had it for a while. I'm stunned a model got made - it only managed a few races before the FIA banned it. I had no idea such a miniature existed, but loved the car from the second I read the article in an old issue of CAR around 1996. I certainly did a double take when I saw it. The bloke (who was also at Uttoxeter ; I almost bought an IXO 240RS off him) had a massive stand and it was stuffed in between a load of random Minichamps. I was looking for the other IXO BX 4TC - number 15 - but no-one had it.

Taking the advice of Seth and DNJ,

Not guilty.

- although Phil later smashed that by simply waiting until the car parking staff had gone home and driving out of the lot for free, the git.

Guilty.

Wait till you are thrown out. Grab 1/2 pint in wetherspoons or waterspoons or whatever. Leave for £free.

I had some work to do nearby so didn't arrive until lunchtime, so paid £28 or something to get in which stung a bit. On the other hand the 604 does 15mpg but because I was in the area on business my employer has to pay that and parking was free, so not so bad in the end.

I walked in through bit where all the Jags and shiny stuff were, through the bike bit and into "shite corner".

Scored this for £4 off the CPUK stand

bought some other tools, like a 6 metre flat tow rope that I wanted for ages and so,e long hex bits that I need to remove 604 driveshafts.

Had a look at the nearly new Saab 9-5 which I really liked and spoke to a bloke about Rover 75s for ages.

Spoke to Sam from practical classics for ages about carbs and megasquirt.

Looked at BXs and chatted with other shitests.

Chatted with watanabe about wheel bearings over the 1/2 pint that he kindly bought me.

Never bothered going back and seeing the other half, it will be the same next year anyway.

Lucky I went yesterday because on the way back I had a call that my dad broke his hip, is in a lot of pain and has other complications. I think that they will operate this afternoon and hopefully I can visit him tomorrow. Remember him in your prayers if you are that way inclined.

Sorry to hear about your Dad, DNJ. Hope all is ok.

I'm off down to the NEC tomorrow and I'm rather excited by it. Early start to get there for 9 but should be worth it.

Big fat A shift yesterday

So NEC = PHAIL :(

However next pay day = 2.5 x 13 hour shifts at time and two thirds. :)

Please post some photos so I know what I have missed

£1 car brochure stand?

Dangerous place! Mind you, of your little lot there I only lack the Fiesta and Zodiac ones. I assume your Tagora brochure is the same one that I have which doesn't include the SX?

Nicola doesn't know yet, but getting my brochures de-boxed and back on shelves is the bit of "doing up the house" that I'm most looking forward to.

Correct, which is a bit strange as it has the SX listed in the rear?. I wish i had bought more now, they had about 30+ Mk3 Cortina brochures, all the same issue there which i paid £5 for one of ebay recently, there's definitely some ebay earn potential in those boxes, the amount the 80's and 90's Ford brochures were unreal.

Posted

Hmmm. I shall be spending a selection of £1s on some old Renault / Simca brochures if they have any then.

Was it all old brochures? Wouldn't mind one for my Toledo or Mazda really.

Posted

All sorts old mate, mainly 80's & 90's but there was plenty of 00's and a few 70's & 60's, There wasn't a huge amount of Seat ones IIRC, apart from 80's Ibiza (I was looking for Malaga ones) but you might score lucky, They are in Hall 17 in front of the toilets BTW.

Sorry to hear about your dad Too Phil, I'm hoping him a speedy recovery.

Hope your dad is on the mend asap DNJ...

Sorry folks, I left at 6.15pm (show closes 6.30) and although I had a free car park pass I went back the way I came into the car park and the staff just waved me through, didn't stop me or owt! Maybe they think the tenner is a fookin con as well!

I also spent a fiver on the £1 brochure stand....pic coming up!

I took nearly 300 pics on my D40, I went in at the deep end, onto full manual with manual focus and out of 280 pics, I reckon 260 are pretty good. The lighting is a mare as already stated and I didn't want to use the flash, arsebook linky below, here is a teaser:
