Skizzer's saffershite (NEW old trucks p2)

Just got back from a trip and managed a few spots while I was there.

First off, a tractor that belongs to some friends-of-friends.

Lots of these emerging-market Toyota things, whose name escapes me, mostly in people carrier form but this one's a lesser spotted pick-up:

Nicely patinated Audi 100:

...and another. Not sure if the Cd is still 0.30 if someone's bashed out a dent using a hammer but no dolly:

LOTS of Toyotas. Here's a Cressida, with the nose of something else successfully* grafted on:

And another Cressida, bit older:

What's this then? Carina? Camry?

Thread resurrection: I promised a few more of these, so here they are.

First up - this picture is of spectacularly low quality, but it features both an SD1 on blocks and a first-gen Mazda 323 so DEAL WITH IT.

Golly, a Fester with a boot. Never seen one of these before - a Safrican special I guess.

My second favourite bakkie was this Toyota Corona:

Three generations of Toyota Corolla next - firstly, a smoky mid 80s one with bonus Hyundai Scoupe:

...then an early 80s one with bonus Honda Ballade in the distance:

...and a fantastic 70s one:

Which is so good it deserves a close up.

Finally for now, this is my most favourite bakkie OF EVAH – a Toyota 1000 from about 1975 (with original owners, I'll wager):

Sorry that the photo quality is a bit shit on some of these - mainly taken at speed. Promise to try harder in future. (Mrs Skizzer was persuaded to do photography duty while I was driving, and did an embarrassingly better job than me quite a lot of the time.)

I've got some trucks and vans to come later, if you eat up all your greens.

That Corolla is extra glorious. I would have said that that's all tropical sun surface rust, but the plate on the front sill would suggest otherwise. Top work Skizzermelad.

The Fiesta Saloon is a Ford Ikon IIRC. Appears also to be called a Bantam for some markets.

want that fiesta

the fiat tractor is hopefully a 900

theres a cabbed one we see drive past uncle pats in co longford most times im there :D

Thanks chaps.

That would be a Chevy LUV which is actually an Isuzu KB ("they've rebadged it, you fool!").

It also seems to be wearing BMW wheel trims.

Ah, that explains it. It doesn't look very Detroit. I think it was sporting a wide variety of wheel trims, in fact, but BMW certainly does seem to be represented on the o/s front.

The Fiesta Saloon is a Ford Ikon IIRC. Appears also to be called a Bantam for some markets.

Ikon is probably right - I know the Fiesta-based half ton bakkies (=pickups) are called Bantams in SA. They're very popular, or were until axed last year.

What's this then? Carina? Camry?

Skyline

Double face palm

Corolla...I would have said that that's all tropical sun surface rust, but the plate on the front sill would suggest otherwise

Yep, I reckon that rear quarter has seen some homebrew panel beating. The local professionals do a better job judging by the E70 Corolla below:

you correct it is an ikon, in sa the bantam is a pickup the earlier ones are mk3/4 escort then mazda 323 based, then later on they had a fiesta front 8)

i loved my time out in sa, shite litters the streets i would move there in a heartbeat :D

The 'cars you didn't know existed' thread has reminded me that I was back in South Africa a few weeks ago, and did some more spottage.

As far as I'm concerned this is a Mazda, but does the different nose mean it's actually some sort of Ford?

More Mazda-ness.  Something about the rear view reminds me of the Xedos 6.

If the Laurel and the Passat aren't shite enough for you, then that blue thing top left is a Pug 504 (surprisingly uncommon in this part of Africa):

As a reward, here's some more chod.

If I lived in SA, my back yard would probably look quite a lot like this, when I'm out somewhere in the Nissan 1400 bakkie and the Land Rover is being fixed:

They're not so big on Hondas, for some reason.  Have a Ballade though:

Soz for variable (ok, poor) photo quality - these were mostly taken at speed by the missus while I dodged potholes, other drivers and the occasional goat.

Anyone want some shonky old trucks next?

Thread resurrection...

... early 80s one with bonus Honda Ballade in the distance:

8139671328_fd21fe6c21_z.jpg

Triple-threat in this pic! The middle one is interesting modern shite - Toyota Avanza Mk2 (or possibly the Daihatsu-badged equivalent). It's a mini MPV with rwd, separate chassis, live axle etc, fairly rugged for emerging markets. Oficially six seats I think, but the benches in the back will hold as many as you dare cram in. They are built all around South-East Asia, and a fairly common over there. I rented one once, it was a doddle to drive, great visibility, and a hoot around town, with the 1.5vvti pez lump from a Yaris or Vios mini-saloon.

Thanks for bringing this thread to the top Skiz, I missed it first time around.

And yes, some shonky old trucks would go down very well, I'm sure.

Posted

Roadworthy Testing is becoming compulsory over there to the same standards as here, except for emissions. You also have to get it done if the vehicle changes hands. I wonder what effect this will have on the chode down there

^ That's interesting: there was certainly noticeably more new Japanese/Ford runabouts and a lot less old tat this year than on previous trips, although that may partly be because there's now a lot more Chinese mineral money swooshing around the areas I was in.

Will post up some trucks later - meanwhile here's a Kadett I forgot:

The Chevrolet Rekord reminded me of the Ranger, a bizarre bit of GM madness from the late 1960s:

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranger_(South_African_car)

Despite having at least four brands with models that could potentially sell well in SA, in Chevrolet, Opel, Holden or Vauxhall, what does GM do? Invent a new brand using Opel bodies and mechanical bits from all over the place. These were billed as 'South Africa's own car' probably because of the success of marketing 'Australia's own car', the first Holden, 20 years earlier.

Amazingly these were also built and sold in Belgium, as if there wasn't enough infighting between Opel, Vauxhall and the various American GM names. Ford, whose rationalisation of their European companies started in the late 60s, must have been pissing themselves.

Sadly for shiters and lovers of short-lived orphan brands, all this madness came to an end in the late 1970s.

I do believe you're right, by George.  One for the 'trucks you've never heard of' thread.  It looks awfully similar to a Magirus Deutz though - are they perhaps related?

Posted

They are indeed and the one you spotted isn't a SAMIL (South African MILitary), as I first assumed, but a SAMAG (South African MAGirus) instead.
This makes it strictly speaking a Magirus, then again, it's different enough from a Magirus to not be a Magirus.

What you saw is most probably a SAMAG 70:

SAMAG-70-1.jpg

The closest corresponding Magirus is probably the 170 D 15:

You live and learn - never knew there was such a thing as a booted Fiasco - probably as well given it's as ugly as it is! However...... the Bantam pick-up you mentioned? I looked this up and I love this, I have a thing for small pick-ups and this one is a beauty. Never seen one in this country but want one.
