Last week I was searching for cheap shite - instead I bit the bullet and bought a bloody train ticket (sodding Branson), after a week or searching, and then discovering I had a few quid more to spend than I thought, I have now decided to source a Maestro - sadly I cant quite stretch to that £1500 Apple2000 on the bay, but it certainly makes me break at least 2 of the Lords commandments.

Am I alone in thinking they are particularly delicious looking beasts?

Erm...in non MG flavour? Yes. Sorry. :P

No, I hanker after one too.The MG ones are just a bit too desirable, I'll have a Clubman D thanks.

Nowt roung with Maestros, the diesel versions in particular being very useful beasts of burden. Watch out for rampant tin worm, and if you find a good one, cover it in Waxoyl.

Personally I hanker after a 1300 A+ donkey - but having been brought up on a diet of A series tin, I'm in my "comfort zone" as the yanks say with them!

I like 'em. My dad had a 1.3L and it was a great car apart form having to keep an eye on the rear arches.I'd love that black Apple one. Bosh some early MG cheesegrater alloys on it and it'd be spot on.

There's a mint one in a dealer local to me. A late City -the body is unmarked, mileage around 50k. Dealer himself had used it for 18 months -as a free 'sleeper'.He has sold it -taken a £100 deposit- but the purchaser has failed to return - or get in touch -several weeks later. So -I reckon with a bit of persuasion -it could be yours .It was marked up at £500- but I can confirm its truly splendid; and they seem pretty amenable..(I was looking at a Piazza Turbo there- to complete 'the set'- but decided against)PM me if you want further details. They are right beside a main line railway station -if that helps?

They're sh*te but they know they are. I'd have one if I had too as they're so easy to work on.Oh and if the very rear of the exhaust pipe goes rotten you can cut a small torch body down, shove it over the rusty pipe and spray it black before taking it to the auction, plus the wheel arches are an absolute dream to plug and spray too:lol:

Is that Barnham? They often look to have some interesting stuff there!

Marvellous thing, the Maestro - spacious, easy to drive, very tunable and no-one will ever nick it.Even if I do say so myself, I became a bit of a Maestro guru in my youth. Apart from the oft-documented and already mentioned tin-worm, look for/keep an eye on:Water pump (on the 1275 A+)Jammed sunroof. Can be very expensive to fix if it's the slide/tilt variety. Also the drains block up meaning water gets inside the headlining.Duff boot catch. temporary fix is to remove one of the gas struts so the tailgate doesn't fly up when you're driving.Door locks can be similarly weak.Gum/varnish on carb slide. Remove the dashpot, take out the slide and clean it with autosol. Refit, top up dashpot to the bottom of the threads for the little piston. Retune.I have an SU how-to somewhere if anyone's after it.

I'm often tempted too. Strangely endearing these days.Do you think they'll end up with the kind of following the (lovely) Landcrab has?My old pop had a 1275 (ex-BT) van. Surprisingly quiet, comfy cruiser at 70.

Hi Reg -yep ,good guess! Who knows- might go for the Piazza turbo after I've 'digested' the Barkas!

I'll have a late 80's 'Special' with 'Special' script on the ide, just to let everyone know you just purchased the worlds biggest share in dashboard blanking plates and rogue switches.

Yes why not! Surely you have room for a bit of late 80s Japanese sporting obscurity not already covered by something else? :D

Marty, if you log onto the Maestro/Montego owner's forum there's an Apple200 being mentioned for £150 somewhere.

What's an Apple200? Sounds like a laptop INNIT! :?

I think they are Maestros built under licence in South Africa, or something/somewhere like that.

Make is XTRA GR8 by finding a working LCD display and onboard computer. Then sit back, drive and enjoy Nicolette McKenzie telling you what to do everyday before and after work. :D

Given none of these are socially acceptable even on AS I'll just nip off and flagellate myself now.

Wrong. Everyone loves a PT cruiser. Especially if it's yellow.

Probably. Anyway, my Confessional ? I think (having owned 4 minis) that Issigonis was a bodging maveric. And the 1959 mini was a bit shit. I think most BLMC products from about 1950 are shite. What I do like is an avenger and a samba.

Interesting to see that in 2008 the acceptance of Maestros as shite was still tentative.

Even their replacement, the Rover 45 is far past it's induction phase here.

I had a hearing aid beige Maestro City for a year or so - went well & I enjoyed its boxiness

I had a white diesel van, it was utter shite.

I suppose it had one redeeming feature in that it woke the entire street and half of the next when I started it up to go to work at 03:50.
