Anybody need a bit of hassle free motoring? If so then step this way!

I bought this last year as I needed something reliable and economical for a long commute to a new job. So far it's been absolutley spot on. Now I work from home, I really don't need it, so needing to thin down the fleet a bit I thought I'd offer it here first.

'96 Toyota Corolla 1.6 16v CD Saloon.

White with LSD inspired Blue trim.

Manual Box.

Electric Front Windows & Sunroof.

Central Locking.

Power Steering.

Completely Standard, even down to the wheel trims.

12 Months MOT, can be taxed at cost.

All good tyres, drives very very well indeed. It's very rev happy, and will embarass a lot of modern and more expensive stuff!

Faults, Stone chip on one headlight, been epoxy'd so no water ingress.

Paint is a little flat, just needs a good polish.

CD player doesnt, may just need the head cleaning - Radio works fine.

Squeak from alternator when cold, always done it so never bothered me.

It's in Leeds City Centre, pm me on here for further details or call o7848-177489

Yours for £450

I never understood why they didn't make these a 1.5L for the UK market...

Posted
What advantage would a 1.5 have given? 1600 was the default cc for a car of this size.

Lower tax bracket

Posted

Yup - I'd only go for a GTi in 1.6L capacity, any other Corolla would have to be in the lower tax bracket to make it a better value.

When this was made, there was only one price for a tax disk.

In June 1999, a reduced car road tax band was introduced for cars with an engine capacity up to 1100cc.[40] The cost of 12 months tax for cars up to 1100cc was £100, and for those above 1100cc was £155.

Only later still was the band moved up to 1549cc max:

In April 2009 ... vehicles registered before 1 March 2001 will still continued to be charged according to engine size, above or below 1549cc.

These rates were retrospective, so had no effect on new car choices.

This is ace, by the way, GR8 4 picking up drunk northern slags. They wave it down, so I've heard!

I wasn't even driving in 1996 and I knew that there was only one price for a tax disc then.

People get obsessed with tax brackets but there's much more to the cost of running a car than road tax.

Posted

Crikey, it's only £30 more for six months.

Oddly the Sera, H.Imp and I had, was the same engine, but 1500cc

It was always cheaper in my experience (driving since 1985) to tax a car below 1549cc.

The June 1999 rate for below 1100cc is a new one to me (but I was living in Hong Kong at the time and perhaps never heard about it) but the above 1100cc rate of £155 is nonsense.

I had to look this up just to see if the special 1100cc thing was correct.

Car first registered before 1 March 2001

For cars first registered before 1 March 2001 car tax is based on engine size as official CO2 data is not available.

Engine 1549cc or smaller – 2012/13 rate = £135 per year (£130 in 2011/12)

Engine bigger than 1549cc – 2012/13 rate = £220 per year ( £215 in 2011/12)

It WASN'T always cheaper to tax cars less than 1549cc. As KruJoe says, it was one flat rate when this car was built. I can't recall exactly when it changed, but change it did at some point in the 1990s I think. I don't recall an 1100cc cut-off. I thought it was 1500 but then moved slightly up to 1550.

No it's actually £42.5 addional per 6 months or £85 extra per year.

If you want to give those wankers in Westminster even more money to waste, then that's fne by me but I'd rather keep it for myself.

Well I tried as much as possible to buy Japanese cars with 1500cc engines to avoid paying more tax - I don't know the exact dates but from memory it was basically below 1600cc and you had cheaper tax, over 1600cc more expensive tax.

Anyway. Thanks for the input on clearing the cost of the tax up.

Do we all think I should just load it in the fragger as it's obviously far too expensive to run?

No... just spend £425 banging a 1500cc Toyota Sera engine in there and recoup the savings after 5 years of motoring on the VED discounted rate

I'm sure you'll sell it - will presumably be a reliable enough motor at the end of the day and should offset the higher rate tax band :)

Even if it cost £100 a year more to tax than a 1.3,work that out to how much a week it is,and ofset that against the fact this a fast and still economical car. Why struggle along in a 1.3,when you can have more performance, and maybe equal if not better economy from a more relaxed 1.6.

I remember a few years back a friend had a MG Roadster for sale,a 1977 Pagent blue with deckchair stripe seats;it was a real gem,but he said he wanted it gone,so would cut to the chase, and offer it cheap at 3500 - hadn't been many years earlier it had cost about 8000,but he had his fun out of it,and was used to 5 series depreciation so thought he would sell it fast, and give someone else a chance of enjoying it.

The amount of " Oh,its not tax exempt,I wouldn't want to pay to tax it,its £180 a year " I heard, yet if they saw a tax exempt one for 6 grand, they would go running waving notes in the air ! The last person to moan at the 180 a year tax was told after a hour of tyre kicking,if he was worried about paying to tax it,then maybe a classic car wasn't for him,as when something goes wrong,180 isn't going to fix very much !

No real arguement there but the difference between a 1498cc (1.5L) car and a 1598cc (1.6L) car is negligible and for some folks, that extra cost for VED is significant.

Personally, I think the cut off should have been beyond 2000cc.

I'm not buying it unless you convert the drivetrain to that of a Prius so I can benefit from free road tax.

Posted

Alternativly, I could jump in my ACME Time Machine, go back to 1971 and register it as a new car then, to take advantage of the future tax exemption.

Posted

The stupid thing it's only £7.08 per month or £1.63 per week more to tax. Hardly going to break the bank, the difference in economy (over a 1.5) wouldn't be noticed and this car will likely be so reliable you'd never have to worry about it going wrong.

Anyone who minged* over an extra £7.00 a month doesn't really deserve to run a car and would probably never maintain it then complain six months later because the tax disc holder fell onto the dashboard. From what I can see it's a decent looking car for pocket money that'll pretty much last forever. GLWTS etc.

*Rhymes with hinged. Not minged, like really minging. There's a difference and you needed to know it. Kthxbi.

Why don't you ring it as a pre 72 S3 Land Rover? You can then register the Land Rover as D701 SWL and change your name to PU51 DRY.

I just sent this for an MOT this morning. OMG IT PHAILED!!!!!! On a tyre. Thats it, no advisories etc. So had both rears replaced, and it'll have 12 months test as of tomorrow.

I've not used it for about a month, and I'd forgotten quite how good it is to drive, anything seems fast next the Audi which is now my daily, but this is quite indecently quick for what it is.

It failed on a fucking tyre! This car is noting but trouble. With the CD player sometimes skipping and now this I think you should weigh the fucker in and buy a new Kia Sportage.

Jeremy Clarkson raced a Corolla 1.6 against a MK3 Golf GTi many moons ago ( its on youtube ) and guess which was the faster car ..... The car in front WAS a Toyota !!
