Welcome all to my first post.

The intro:

So after a few months of wasted evenings on here, fleaBay motors and endless banter with fellow shiter cms206 in the pub, I have finally decided to take the plunge and go buy something! I've also taken it upon myself to actually make a post on here now that I have something of my own to waffle about.

The shite:

I don't think I'm quite brave enough (yet) to own something that needs work or even a good example of something PROPERLY shite (ie some good BL tat) so I've decided to play it safe with a Volvo 740GLE estate - 2.3 with ZF automatronic. fleabay was the source of this one and appears to be a decent machine (even though I havn't undertaken a viewing or test drive). Brand new MoT (today), 6 months tax (from today) and more service history than you could shake a very large shitty stick at.

All for £586.01 <-- Don't forget the penny.

The collection:

Sadly I'll have to wait until next week for my next 2 days off work together to actually go fetch said article as it's rather a jaunt. It'll involve an overnight bus or train to Londonshire and a train into the 'burbs before the 400-odd mile trip home can commence. Hopefully I'll be arsed and will remember to document the trip with facetubings, forums posts and photos.

Anyways I won't disturb yeez all any longer. Besides, I've a cup of tea that's needing drinking.

Good grief. You Scottish lot do like a drive don't you?! Few cars better for distance work than a big Volvo though. Welcome and I look forward to a Roadtrip tale.

Why whenever I see a car I like on eBay it is 9 times out of 10 in fucking Fife, and yet when ever you Scottish want a car you head south of the border for the sort of chod I don't want?

Welcome indeed, I had a 740 estate after a 740 saloon and followed by a 940 estate, all 2.3 petrol and the 940 had a low pressure turbo. They all had over 200k on the clock when they moved on and were very reliable apart from the odd electrical gremlin. Get yourself a can of switch cleaner, your going to need it sooner or later - window switches probably.

I blame Scooters. If he hadn't bought that bloody gold 740 and sold it to half the forum, Dave wouldn't have driven mine and decided it was A Good Idea to buy one. Same for rml245's saloon.

I have every faith that this example will be GR8. If mine did 840 miles on the shitefest epic roadtrip this should have no bother.

Also, Dave drives a diesel Golf. Best get that out the road now...

Welcome aboard Dave. That Volvo looks pretty tasty - it was on my watch list, and I was quite prepared to go down to Englandshire to get it too! Sadly, even the modest asking price is beyond me right at the mo.

Look forward to hearing about it.

Why whenever I see a car I like on eBay it is 9 times out of 10 in fucking Fife, and yet when ever you Scottish want a car you head south of the border for the sort of chod I don't want?

Was wondering something similar myself! When I first moved to Fife, the place was awash with bargain basement crap; now even Auld Reekie's a let-down. So once you've psyched yourself up to cross the Rope Bridge, you might as well carry on south.

Actually, when you had your Sierra for sale, I did price up bus tickets for the (potential) journey. It would've been essentially a 2 bus trip. There was one for sale in Kelty at the time, which is also a 2 bus trip from here. So you see the logic there. Besides, Kelty is such a weird place, I'd willingly travel to the other end of the island to avoid it.

Fife is both in Scotland and surrounded by salt water on three sides.

Also, this.

Cheers for the weclomes guys. I like the way Phil refers to 'The Kingdom' as 'Fucking Fife'. What's wrong with Fife? Well...apart from the fact it's unformly horrible, everything's grey and drab, everyone speaks with an annoyin' accent while referring to roundabouts as "Circles" and just the fact it's all just horrible.

RobT - the Jewish Racing Gold one didn't appeal, no. It's wasn't an estate. Or was it an estate with manual gearbox? I can't remember. Something annoyed me about it.

The gold one was a manual GLE with a caramac and black interior. Even I'd have run a mile and I have no standards at all. I'd have had the tailgate, bonnet and OSF wing for mine though...

cms can you point me to the right link on i-player to watch the olympic cycling event featured in your avatar? :D

T1300, don't mind him, you've made a good move! As has David, welcome. I loved my 740 GLE estate auto, as the other Shiters are doubtless tired of me saying  cos I do say it often and freely. I find it hard to imagine a better car for daily duty, for the price. And as they are now almost all 20 years old or more, they qualify as Shite which is great, and have even appeared in classic-car mags! Well, PC anyway. Good luck with your new purchases chaps.
