Multipla had been shunted into the garage to work on the MGF. No use for it at present, until lockdown ends and there are some long trips to do the 206 is perfect.

MGF will hopefully be in for an MOT next week, seems to run well but I need to give the rest subframe and various other bits a clean up and rust protect.

Started with the angle grinder and flap wheel, Vactan put on. Zinc primer and black chassis paint to follow.

Two coats of Vatcan and then Zinc 182.

Having to hide under the car as the hale started half way through.

Hope to get another coat on tonight and then some black chassis paint tomorrow. MoT booked for Tuesday at 12.45.

Compared to MX5s, particularly NB’s, MGF bodyshells feel like they are hewn from granite.  I mean the steel feels like it’s twice the gauge, and they also bothered to slap on some underseal...

Never had the pleasure of an MX-5 but the MGF does have a large my arse shaped dent in the rear arch from when I tried to lift it a little to get a jack under.

Have to agree the underseal if pretty good, from the exposed fittings and swirl pot cover it looks like the car spend some time near the sea, or possibly in it, but the underseal has kept the actual bodyshell protected. But it reaching the age where it is drying out and cracking on the edges. Post not it will need a bit of TLC.

I took the rubber seal off and painted under there too. The paint seems to chip quite easily however.

It's all back together now, the MoT tomorrow lunchtime. If it doesn't fall to badly I'll need to fix the rear screen.

Saab has done a trouble free 100 miles. Had the code wiped by a Saab specialist near king's Lynn earlier (who amazingly didn't charge). Need to try and the the latches on the tonneau cover to lock then try the roof.

 

Now the Rover 414 is seeing the mechanic. The timing belt hadn't snapped but the inlet cam pulley had worked loose!

All striped now, some damage showing to the head gasket so the head will be skimmed before it goes back together.

As I am short of working vehicles I bought from them a diesel a working diesel 9-5.

Soft tops are pointless in England anyway as it should be at least 25°C before putting the roof down.

I saw an ad for a tidy looking 2007 MX5 on muppetface recently.  I won't sell the MR2 because it's a brilliant car, but I read the blurb anyway. I stopped at the part where it mentioned 'all the welding has been done '. Didn't Mazda learn after the grim rot issues with the Mk2?! Yes, they have other issues, but at least your average MGF and MR2 of a similar vintage won't need tickling with a MIG once a year.

So I had a day out at 2 stroke to turbo just south of Cambridge today. Lovely to see @LostnotFound and LostnotFound junior in his burgundy Swedish drop top for a walk round a park and a catch up.

There was a bit of a delay as the previous job was overrunning so I had to kick around for a few hours but the good news was the motor for the tonneau cover hadn't broken as they predicted so no need to replace. Just needed the ecu coded to match the hood details at 2.5 hours labour.

So now it works, lovely drive home with the roof down. Heater seems to have lost its direction function so it's a bit crap and the radio code is lost. Other than that it is making me grin.

I had tax reminder for the Saab a few days ago.

Unfortunately I thought I'd sorned it October when it came off the road with an oil leak. Bugger.

The Multipla died sadly, my aim of reaching 200,000 miles was cut short as the engine management warning and accompanying limp mode returned with a vengeance. Then BeEP took it back to his house to have a look and the front spring broke, taking out a two month old tyre. Car take back paid £325 which was £95 more than it cost in 2016.

It is cat N for the front bumper damage that was easily fixed, BeEP's plastic welding gun doing a great job putting it together.

More of a problem was the interior.

The poor dog (it maybe dogs) the previous owner had must have been ball by then end.

Hours with the vacuum, wet vac, brushes, drill brushes and degreaser have it looking much better (but far from perfect). The whiff of dog is there when you first get it but hopefully with use and air fresheners it will go.

On the upside £15.40 had been left in it.
