Piece of piss. Crack the hose connection (17 spanner) before loosening/removing the 2 bolts (13 spanner). Put a placcy bag over the reservoir & tighten right up- the airlock will limit the lost fluid.

Pull back -off the steel pin & spin the cylinder off the hose -being careful to save the2 copper washer()s either side of the hose (important to stop leaks).

Loosen the bleed nipple & spin the new one on to the hose (inc copper washer or it will leak). Push onto steel pin & reinsert bolts. Tighten to order. Remove the placcy bag & top up -if necessary.

If you have company get assistant to push pedal whilst you manipulate bleed nipple- couple of pumps will do it. If not, just attach a length of washer tube up through the engine bay & loosen nipple. 2 or 3 pumps of the pedal, gently, then gingerly tighten nipple. Lose the wasted fluid -job done. 10 -15 mins, tops.

Not having much luck so far! A combination of my awful tool kit and stubborn connections...

You only need 2 spanners! If its the hose connection -leave the other 2 bolts in place, till its cracked.. If its the 2 retaining bolts -go get a good ring or socket. Once one is out you can wiggle it around to crack the seal of the other..

Right - tops the old one, the nut holding the pipe in is stuck, so much that it seems like its welded on... bottoms the new one...

We've got all the other bits disconnected... not sure where to go from here! That nuts getting pretty round from trying...

If you have any ideas to prevent Barrett and myself going MENTAL, my numbers 07722 098982 - thanks...

Hope that helps?

Next stage -if it doesnt come off -is to cut the pipe off as close to slave as poss -hopefully neatly/square. This gets it off car where you can release the net with ring spanners/sockets.

Its a plastic pipe -so the fitment 'should' be a small insert. Slide the released nut over the pipe, add the insert and apply to new cylinder.

Oh -and BUY A TOOLKIT!!!!!!!

Posted

Oh -bottom one is just a plastic bung to stop dirt getting in. it levers out to reveal a nice shiny thread.

Posted

Right -

IMAG0443.jpg

Got the nut off, now that bit of pipes still stuck in there pretty firmly so we can't get the thing we need off the end...

Frustrating.

Posted

The plastics just coming away, the bit we needs still wedged in there!

Posted

The slave is scrap so whack the side of it to dislodge it. Its only tiny -so if needs be stick a small screwdriver in and wiggle it free.

Posted

So - do both of these bits need to go in the end of the pipe?

Well done.

Wont be difficult. Read what i wrote earlier -jobs a good 'un

Posted

Well done -not such a bad job, really.

As long as there are no leaks (check the reservoir level) its sorted

Posted

el-oh-el. Only took SIX FUGGIN' HOURS. Not quite sure how we did it but it does appear to be working. There is a little leak at the pipe end though so I'm sure it'll have to be done again at some point really soon.

Couldnt you find a taller kerb? Failing that, buy a cheap wheel ramp & keep it in the boot.

Posted

Access wasn't actually that bad, you could easily slide under there. Didn't have much choice of curbs as it had to be in pushing distance (That Simca is a lot heavier than it looks....)

Posted

Wheel ramp, plugs out ,crank it up on the starter mota!

Right, as I'm bored and looking forward to getting this back, I might as well update this thread with SIMCA NEWS.

Maybe Barrett can update the title of the thread to something a bit more generic at some point.

ANYWAY loads* has happened since the last update in June...

After changing the slave cylinder, which took about 3 minutes IIRC, we decided to test it by going to Beaulieu for their first Simply French day. This was great, and the car made it there with no problems at all!!

Unfortunately the journey back didn't go as smoothly.

The high quality cluch slave cylinder installation had somehow failed

A rubber seal thing had somehow gone missing (no idea how, it was defo in there before - I blame Barrett), and the pipe had popped out of the top. After fuggin' ages an RAC man came and fixed it for us.

The next destination was Shitefest. As you know, it made it there successsfully, and it made it all the way back too!!!

This was on the way back.

After Shitefest, next stop was Classics on the Common in Harpenden on the 26th of July. Plan was to meet Seth on the way, and follow him for the last leg of the journey.

The day started off pretty badly, as I broke one of the 70s lights off of the bumper by leaning on it. As I couldn't be arsed to remove it properly I just taped it to the bumper. That'll do, I'll take them off at Seth's house or something.

Once we got to the M25 (between Junction 8 and 9 I believe...), it started making an ominous tapping noise, which quickly also resulted in a significant loss of power. We pulled on to the hard shoulder to investigate, and by this time it'd turned into a horrible bottom end knock. Great.

Somehow all of the oil had escaped. It wasn't looking good.

After ages, the RAC came, tried to adjust the timing and made it worse, then followed us off at the next junction, where we waited for ages (again) for a transporter thing to arrive.

And that's it. It sat around looking sorry for itself, then I moved house and in November it went off to be assessed by the Retro-Rides guys. It then sat here for a while...

And last week I was sent this picture

Healthy. That seemed to be the extent of the damage though, and with some new shells it's apparently running fine! :D

The MOT's booked for Tuesday...

So - as of today I've owned this car for 225 days. Out of those, it's been working for 39. Hopefully I'll be able to beat this 17% record this year...

It is an absolutely beauty though, so it can be a little huffy at times. It's allowed. Has the gearchange improved with the clutch sorted?

Posted

That's great new Gary, I bet your well excited about getting it back again so you can start pulling those hot chicks in it.

Posted

It's a great looking car this although I have no recollection of ever seeing one on the road. I hope you get it back soon to get some use out of it. Great use of the kerb system axle stand by the way.

Posted

Yeah the gearchange was fine after the clutch was sorted (as far as I can remember...)

Hopefully it won't need much for the MOT!

Posted

Have updated the thread title. are we gonna take this to that cafe meet thing next month to celebrate its return to the road? I really miss being chauffeured about in this beauty. Also we need to try and get Simca and BOND in the same photograph at some point.

Posted

That really is quite a run of bad luck. Without wanting to tempt fate, even my Imps have been more reliable than that.

Sure it was just teething problems for a new owner. Sure it will be okay going forward.

Posted

Excellent. So was there any diagnosis why it ate the bottom end, or had it just run itself out of oil? (note: I can't see the pics because of the work firewall)
