Please save my Alfa GTV

On the way to the garage to check my GTV over for an MOT, the clutch went- I reckon the thrust bearing had punched through the fingers.... As its due tax, MOT and now this I've decided to move on as its not really practical as a family car anyway.Just started a new job today (breakdown driver :) so needed wheels ASAP. Picked up a purple 58k mile '93 Carina E auto yesterday. I'll be running around in my Merc Vito breakdown van, so the Carina is more shopping/teenager friendly..

Its a 99 Proteo red TS, 91k. Perfect engine and box, perfect cloth interior. Stainless exhaust, working aircon, electric aerial,GTV mats,no warning lights on,working remote locking, doesn't use any oil or water at all.Electric sunroof. Thousands in bills and reciepts, 3 keys.

When I checked it over I reckon it needs 1 tyre, front pads and possibly discs and thats about it. I replaced a front wishbone, both track rod ends and an inner CV boot a few months back. Rear suspension is standard and all good. NO clunks, bangs or rattles when driving. I'm gutted.

I just want it to go to good use rather than the scrapman, but tax runs out at the end of the month so has to go before then. Its in Central Fife and would need towed. Scrap is £225, so this is what I'd take.

I'm not interested in this bargain Alfa, but should it not still be driveable? I take it you can't release the clutch by pushing the pedal. Start it in gear and then carefully pull it out and into gear by getting the engine speed right in relation to road speed. Bit of a bugger in rush hour but fine for a late night blat down an empty motorway!

If I have got the clutch stuff wrong then please ignore the above

It won't be driveable if the release bearing has punched the fingers out of the clutch. Not even slightly. It'll just rattle like a bastard and go nowhere - no matter what you do with the pedal.

I think that Tim's saying that the clutch will be permanently engaged, so you can start it in gear & then crash the gears. You just can't disengage the clutch with the pedal.

If this is the case, then yes - you can do this. I once drove a Lotus Excel with a dodgy hydraulic clutch from Kent to about 30 km south of Paris & back like this :D

AAAARRGGHHHHH!

Why so far away? Why am I so skint? Why won't anyone buy my 156?

If it could be made to drive bycrashing gears etc., I'd be interested in having a punt, but I think getting it transported from Fife would be a bit pricey.

I've had the same thing and you won't be able to put it into gear. I also wish it was closer!

I drove it with no clutch for about 5 miles, started in 1st on the starter, then once the revs were right you can get 3rd and 5th easily. Not so easy going down the box! I once drove an LT35 from Hamilton to Glenrothes with no clutch.. when there were still tolls on the Forth Bridge... I'm sure I got the man in the box on the forehead with a 50p :D

Gotta be one of the prettiest Alfa's. I just love the design.

Well.. It's been a busy shite weeks. Alfa has gone to a good home where it will be fettled and returned to the road. Don't be scared of these things, they are brilliant!

Now I have started my new job, I have my company vehicle, so no need for a commuter/daily driver, so room for some serious shite in my life now.

My daily wheels.

The GTV wasn't practical as a family car, so got replaced with this for shopping duties etc..

59K, Full Toyota service history and all the usual bits done including the belt and water pump. Drives nice too

The BMW spat its clutch just before a weekender to Skye, so with less than 24 hours to go it looked like this:

and later that weekend it transported myself and the wife to 2 days of misery and running around flapping arms because of the midgies.. Note the bonus shite spot- early Mk2 Scirocco!

LTskye.jpg

Over the weekend I found the riding position to give me mega back and shoulder ache, as well as numb hands and arms so it's now gone, to be replaced by an early ZZR1100 later this week, which needs prepared to go to the Black Forest in 6 weeks time.

Hmm, shocked the the BMW was so problematic re: back. They were supposed to be uber comfy, etc, etc. Mmmmmm, ZZR1100. I had the retro nekkid jobbie, the ZRX100. Fab bike, fab engine. I can only imagine how good that will be. Nifty choice.

I've owned a BMW K100RS since the late 80's -and have used it several times to tour Europe, comfortably, at speed.

If its vibrating , ts either tired tyres or in dire need of a service. Should be a smooth as silk.

The K1100 engine was as smooth as- just the LT has rubber mounted handlebars, and at 4000rpm (60mph) there are high frequency vibes which send your arms to sleep after an hour. My K100 LT was the same. Everything was set up correctly, valve clearances,TPS,cylinders were balanced, the lot, but the vibes remained. I've got to go from Fife to teh tunnel to Holland in 1 sitting, so this would drive me crazy. It was fine at 80, and even better at 100 :)

Tyres had only done <1000.Full service including fuel filter and plugs 1500 miles ago. My R1100RS boxer was vibey, as boxers are, but I could sit on that all day, covered 1038 miles in 24 hours a few years back on one, and only stopped 'cos I fell asleep on it. Great bikes, just don't get on with K's.

love ZZR's- had 3 600's and find them to be brilliant all rounders, so hopefully the 1100 should be the same + 500 :) the thought of 147 BHP is scaring me a little though.
