Four head gaskets and two engines later... End of thread

Got a fault code reader in the post this evening, thanks Steve! Code 1: Catalyst. Code 2: Miss fire cyl 3. Cleared both as has new downpipe catalyst and lambda sensor. Now the engine management light is OFF :) In head gasket news it is slightly more smokey that I would expect, although when sat half an hour the temp never went above half and the rad. fan cut in as it should. The top rad. hose was too hot to touch for long, although I'd expect that; the heat shield was and still is missing. The lower rad hose was quite bareable to hold onto. It is stil emitting rusty water from the exhaust. It was sat for 12 months.

Funnily enough I've just purchased a ZT-T V6 190 Manual, just out of MOT with 150k... what could go wrong?

Plus side, it has a personalised plate ending in ZTT and a factory fit dashboard TV!

Whip off the cam cover and make sure you haven't got a missing breather mesh. Powertrain missed some, mine included.

It's obvious here where the missing one goes. DON'T do what some mong did and stuff a Brillo pad in there. It'll go on fire, if wee bits of it don't ruin the cams first!

i'm really struggling to se what that bit of wire mesh is bringing to the party TBH, i bet they deleted it to save 0.6p per engine

The missing one is for the inlet manifold breather. The one that is actually there stops the IACV filling up with oil. Replacing the missing one stopped my smoky startups. Someone on MacD had the same result, but I can't remember who it was.

They're really nice cars when they're running right but I agree with the general consensus, you can pick them up for under a few hundred quid in decent nick so why bother with that one?

Have the cambelts (yes, there are 3 ) been done ? Appart from clutch hydraulics, nothing too much to worry about, and at them miles, most likely been done anyway :)

The MG ZR is booked in for test Monday morning. I expect it to fail on emissions.. It was a toss up between this and the new Samba.

See this is what happens when you pull a bastard old Rover out of a scrapyard........ Passed it's MOT

Jeez Edd, good effort!

Now flog it for £coin and fix up some real shite.

What are you taking to Shitefest?

Which way will you go, wanna call in here on the way and go in convoy?

Posted

RESULT! Now all you need to do is swap it for a Honda Civic!

Posted

Was going to stay at Benno's Friday night to split the drive, am taking the FSO, what you taking? A 2 FSO 1 Lada convoy would be fun.. You doing it a59, m6, m5?

Posted

Ahh Billy, I've got quite enough Honda Civics thanks. The MG is my savings account towards a Sierra Cosworth, or a Talbot Tagora. Or I may just keep it and save again for them two :/

Remind me, where's Ben based?

Yes, I'll do a59, m6, m5 - seems most direct, but it'll be the BX I think, the Lada is pissing pez from the carb, and I've found worrying flakiness hiding on the rear turrets (yes I know it just flew it's MOT) so I'll want to zip them up before owt ambitious. Shame, as it's a far better mile muncher than the under-geared Citroen. Anyway, it's 14th July and all that, so the frog it is.

1 month update: Brilliant little car, really fun to drive but not fast enough in 1.4 form! Problems: abs light on when driven over 90, goes back off again though. Missfire from time to time, management light back on. And the brake pedal does a real weird thing kinda kicks back or vibrates quite vigorously sometimes. Same as a Santa Fe I was driving, and a Volvo 850. (under light braking)

Oh yeah, drove it for 11 hours today, other than a window wiper working loose it's been perfectly behaved.

What BHP is yours,as I know the Rover 25 had a 83 and a 103 BHP option, but the 83 was easily uprated by swapping the throttle cable and housing off a higher output model

My Rover 200 is a 1.4 (a 214i to be exact) so pretty much the same.

It's a fun little car to drive, not much punch but I only needed it for pootling around town or going up and down motorways. I'm not going racing!

I pretty much know the K-Series engine inside and out and could change a head gasket in my sleep, so if you need any help in the future feel free to ask.

No head gasket fail as of yet, but I'd like to sort the ABS out. First car I've owned with ABS!

This morning on my way into work I had to abandon my MG in a field broken down.
