I have a simple rule with the shit I buy to do up.

If you can't drive it, don't buy it.

Having learnt this pearl of wisdom the hard way, I'd just like to chip in my two cents and say this point is worthy of reiteration.

Are you going for the understatement of the year?

It is not as bad as it looks:

IMAG0132.jpg

I wouldn't take this thing for free to be honest.

If the chap that's been working on it had the skills to do this restoration he'd have it finished by now. I reckon he realises it's a black hole.

I did a similar thing once with a '68 VW Camper - best thing I ever did was get rid of the fucker! I even bought another one to use as spares.....

Looking at prices now of course, that was probably not an astute move but I didn't lose out financially when I parted them out for spares and then got S&I Thomson to take the remains away.

I'm pretty sure that Peugeot that you were working on previously was a walk in the park compared to this project!

What is ace about this rather distressing car is that it has made us aware that so many of us have owned and loved a CX estate in the past - me included. They must be some sort of Autoshite apprenticeship. :D

These replies confirm CX values will go higher - it will reduce the number resurrected and put peeps off ones which need work. For fuck's sake, there's a thread on here about a BX which looks trashed but has been kept on the road because it's rare, yet anyone who knows their French onions knows a BX is a Peugoet parts bin car made to the lowest possible cost whereas a CX is a real CItroen - yet no more complex to repair unless the longerons are fooked. And a good deal tougher.

As DS values continue to soar, it's the CX and Traction which are still bargains. Many late DSs I've driven feel very unspecial compared with any CX, even the shitty S2s cheapened by PSA.

Get on and buy it laddo, it's way better value at £300 than many a £1200 CX with a freshish ticket. I'll give you all the help I can - knowledge and access to spares if necessary. Not only will you end up with a car worth the thick end of £5k (if you ditch the slushmatic for a 5-speed) but you'll be a specialist in waiting.

Just make sure the longerons and rear subframe is good. It's impossible to say how good a good CX is, little can maintain its pace over a variety of roads and conditions. Make sure you fit 700cc spheres (will have to be recon unless you chance on some new o/s) at the back. The fly-by-hydraulic steering is sommut else - there's good reason it's still used today by the WRC cars.

And how much will it cost to make this once-mobile storage unit worth £5k (assuming you change the transmission)?? - I understand and admire your passion for CX's, but personally I'm struggling to see the viability of this as a project.

I say buy it, but caveat emptor, as they say. It's not an easy job, but you obviously like it enough to consider taking it on despite the obvious work it'll need.

Worst comes to worst, there's £150 in scrap and likely a reasonable amount in spares, interior trim etc. If you get it home and realise it's absolutely shagged beyond redemption, I'd bet you won't be too much out of pocket. I do think these will go the way of the DS eventually and start commanding good money. After all, it isn't like there's really any comparison to a CX is there :)

I could see it being one of those things that takes a long time (years) to rebuild, but eventually you might end up with something special. The question is whether you consider it worth the time and money.

Actually....if no one bothers to save these cars then they will vanish...end of. Yes its a complicated car, yes it will take a lot of work and dedication, but isn't that the whole point? If any of us wanted the easy route, we'd buy a new car every 3 years, never open the bonnet and be exactly like the mindless morons of normaldom.

I've seen cars rise from the scrap by pure hard graft and enthusiasm, so Scooters, if you think you can do it, then go for it, it'll need cash and patience, but help and support would be in plentiful supply I'm sure.

If that was a barn find, unrestored and left unmolested for years, then it would be a challenge but would be worth taking on. If it had been partly restored according to a plan, but had to be put on one side but carefully stored it would still be worth taking on.

But this one is different. The bodywork has been started and abandoned, the electrics have been started and abandoned; in fact it looks as if the whole thing has been abandoned, eg, CP tarp and just look at the state of the brakes  Don't believe a word of what the owner said, all the evidence points to terminal cluelessness on the whole project. Don't even think of it

Trig's link looks a far better proposition; the owner appears to have known to admit defeat before too much harm has been done, and it could be a good buy for the right person.

idiotboy - A fair point well made, but if you look at the surviving examples of most "rare" but not-yet-valuable cars they've not been saved from the scrapper, but have been cherished throughout their lives so no-one has had to make the speculative investment of a costly restoration. As has been said before, if the car has some emotional value to Scoots (or if it's the only one available) then maybe it's worth it, but the fact remains there's still a fair few "out there" and they can't all be saved.

I admire your optimism. You could spend 10k to end up with a car worth 5k..

Actually, what would definitely happen is that you'd spend 10k to end up with a car worth 1 -> 1.5k.

If we're setting fire to money why not go the whole hog and get a DS?

That's exactly what my Allegro nut Girlfriend said last night when I found two long parked bits of autoshite on a walk last night. You can't save them all.

Trouble is I tend to try. I didn't have my camera but I will grab some shots for the forum. One was a late 80's Maestro that was parked on the drive back in 1994 and never moved again by the look of it. The other is a Volvo 240 GLT that's not moved for some time.

I also got accused by her of "doing a MacGyver" last night because I used an old pair of Headphones to get the dynamo lights working on her bicycle. :-D

If you ever want to know what owning a DS is like, wake up each hour during the night to set fire to £200.

I love them though, but then I regard a Velosolex as a practical means of transport.

It's easy enough to work out if that CX is financially viable to rescue.

Vague sums.

Purchase price £0

Welding £1000

Paint £1500

Rebuild engine £ 500

Clutch £ 100

Sort hydraulics £ 350

Brakes £ 200

Rewiring £ 500

Bushes etc £ 200

Ok, it could be done more cheaply, but Scooters is unlikely to be spending 40 hours a week welding / painting etc so that would have to be farmed out.

I reckon that CX would take a good few grand to get it on the road, even if it was free.

I find it amusing that the owners of this CX think that if you take the wiring loom out of a car, make your own new one (all from yellow, green and blue wire), leave it all disconnected and draped all over the interior for years, you’ve done a good job as long as you bosh a bit of Vaseline on it.
