I would think the reason for using a VP 1500 was that an allergy with the AP slushbox has one of the highest ratio reverse gears, hence the 40 mph thing.

I suppose it's funny - ish but I feel TG's formula is wearing thin now. Shame about the All aggro, I can't help but feeling a little pain each time they trash a completely useable old shagger that a family hovering near the poverty level could have had for free. These guys are like toffs now. I recall the Goffey days too - somehow it wasn't boring to me! And Mr smug Quentin Willson. - QW definately leaned towards the luxury end of shite tho. Anyone recall the series called 'the car's the star' with QW giving a history of a common classic each week?Hillman Imp, Cit DS, 2CV, and the allegro were my faves.. Were Allegros really banned from a tunnel in the UK ?(was it in Merseyside?)

You'll find that 98.3% of all families hovering near the poverty line would tell you to take a hike if offered a baby-poo-green Allegro, even if it was free. They would all promptly then march down to 'motorpoint' in disgust and "buy" an 03-reg Zafira on 39% apr finance for the rest of time.

I think that is changing, as the said family may well find that Motorpoint either no longer exists, or if it does, can`t help them. L-reg Mondeos with cracked bumpers would be due an increase in poularity were it not for the fact that they are all being sold to the nicest, most un-picky, non complaining customer in the world. He tends to think they are a bit big, but can sort any size-reduction work that is required for himself. If that Vanden Plas came from a scrap yard or metal yard, - as has been suggested - it would have probably already had it`s certificate of destruction issued, therefore no better fate awaited it anyway. At least this way it got recorded on some beautifully shot celluloid first, destined to forever be a Youtube talking point, with people either joyous or incensed by it`s destruction, not realising it technically no longer existed even before the conception of that episode. On the other hand if they bought it for £500 off some guy who`d just spent 2 weeks getting it sorted out for the MOT then they are just a set of ballbags.

I sincerely hope you're right & that that goes for all the old cars they mess around with. Besides the fact that alot of the stuff heading to the scrappies at the moment isn't heading there cos it truly needs to anyway! I think I'm happier not knowing the truth.

Just increases the value of surviving examples doesn't it. A shame seeing as I think some serious thinning-out of MGB numbers are needed about now. What would annoy me more is if that fat TV budget was used to obtain and destroy the last known roadworthy example of something, crash-testing that Alpine A610 was only one or two steps away from this.

I don't know whether the fact it still had six months tax on it is relevant - my inclination is that they're a set of ballbags anyway, no matter where they got it from.

Another reason why mr and miss carKredit would shun an Allegro over a 4 year old people carrier would be the conceived image that a car built some 30 years ago would require much maintenance and repair, which might well the truth in some respects. Besides 'our' cars would fail critically in terms of accident safety and ability to withstand the capers of everyday driving. Best give the car to someone who will look after it instead of wasting the car at the expense of the TV licence payer. I've not seen the latest top gear, and I'm not sure whether I'd want to.

Well, it's mildly entertaining - My wife and I huddled around our old laptop to watch it on iPlayer. I was a little surprised to see that they had made a cheap copy of my v12 coffee table though for their set...

Guess I should have offered mine first...

Incidentally, when TG finished, iPlayer recommended a programme about the making of the UK's motorway infrastructure

You can see it here until Saturday:

It makes for an hour of the most entertaining shite spotting I've seen for a very long time. Bravo![/img]

The scrap cars were returned to the scrappy after they had finished with them.. One of the menbers of another forum had been told of a mk3 cortina in his local yard so he went to see if it was worth saving.Turns out it was one of the cars sent to top gear for the scrap pile.. scrappy said it might come back ok or wrecked... it came back wrecked. Not by the stunt, but by the beeb who squished all the cars flat after the event to get more on to the trailer

Don't worry Dave - there's a picture of it on a Retro rides thread and it was most definitely not worth saving - it was just about fit for a very brave banger racer, or one who could do a LOT of welding!http://retrorides.proboards86.com/index ... 326&page=2

Hamster saved that Kdett from Africa, though, didn't he? My hunch is that they do know a fair bit about what's interesting and really worth saving. There are still more classics/shiters around than there are people who want to save them, sadly....

Yup. Mr Jones at Practical Classics now has it, and they are restoring it as a feature over the next few months.

Scrapman, I thought of you straight away when I saw their table and wondered if you'd managed to sell them one for vast sums whcih you could put towards silly car building projects. Ho hum. Wasn't that impressed to be honest for a first episode of a new series. I'd have thought they'd want to start with a really good one....

I know the A610 thing has ruffled a few feathers, my take on it is that yes it was wrong but it's done now. Not great publicity for the Alpine marque but at least it has generated some interest........I do like Top Gear, it's also the only motoring programme me and the mrs watch together and have a good laugh about. The bodicea spike was a classic, JC's face when it nearly flipped his Fiat Coupe was fantastic!

What was the A610 thing? I think that one passed me by. Is it on Youtube?Ta.

Hmm. Yeah that is a little bit of a pointless waste I must say.Speaking of which, has anyone else seen the Liverpool Victoria (LV) car insurance ad where an Austin Apache has a Volvo rolled into it?I know in Practical Classics there have been some letters about the Walkers crisps/Routemaster unpleasantness, but no-one has mentioned this one yet.

Got a suspicion that was made in South Africa where old cars are twoapenny. Lots of ads now made there on cost grounds.

I was thinking that, it would make sense. It was just that the street furniture and the houses looked very British, although they could have been added via the gift of computers. And there are probably only a handfull of Apaches in this country. You are probably right.

Yup, that and controllable weather. They made a Golf ad there a while ago that got lots of "Life on Mars"-type anoraks in a lather, because the Mk1 GTI they featured was completely wrong, apparently.

Was it not wearing a set of BBS rims and a paint stripped/rusty bonnet then?I missed the Tiff gag too. Tell us Pog!

Golf Advert

Woo not seen that before! Me like! Who cares about the steering wheel, I wouldn't have looked that closely anyway! (I was more interested in that British Telecom Escort van! 8) )incidentally, was that authentic? I thought they only used HAs & maybe Marina / Ital vans?

Posted

The only ad like that I remember celebrating all the series of Golfs was the one in a wind tunnel when it keeps morphing into the next gen. Says 'Golf GTi 30 years in the making' or something like that....EDIT: ahh this looks like it...

Posted

VW should have been hammered for that. While it may have been true to say the Golf GTi had been around for 30 years, it is a barefaced lie to imply that it had been around for 30 years in the UK.
