All this stuff on the box at the mo about the RMS Titanic.

Looking at the pictures of the rust, crappy interior etc I have to ask is this Marine Shite?

Posted

Oh. Only looked at this thread cos I thought it was about Marinas...

unfortunately - it's scene tax stuff - having sold postcards of the Titanic ranging from £30 up to £6,700 each, with quite a lot in the low-mid thousands, they attract scene tax.

marine shite would be an A-class Cunarder sailing out of Liverpool full of emigrants, carrying cargo too.

The aeroplane equivalent would be a Dan Air Comet or a Derby Airways DC3 as opposed to a BA Concorde.

I'd say the ultimate example of marine shite is the mighty DUKE OF LANCASTER

And gadani beach or alang are worth looking at to see marine shit scrapyards!

Titanic (and others) the ultimate rat look? VW air-cooled owners are you jealous?

Funnily, I've always called it the "Shi-tanic". I always wondered whether the manifest showed cars in the hold..... I know the recent film showed a (Renault)? sedanca in the (lit!!) hold, but were there any there for real?

No - it has to be able to float...never mind being seaworthy.

Apparently there was a Renault in one of the holds, Robert Ballard mentions it in his book about discovering the Titanic.

Ah - so what appeared to be the boilers exploding was really a dCi engine ingesting its own oil!

Have to disagree with you there my friend

While the Duke of Lancaster (1956) is indeed impressive, at 4,400 tons she is a mere tiddler compared to the 53,000 ton United States (1952), one of the most famous liners of all time and the legitimate Blue Riband holder. She has been laid up in Philadephia for many years but thankfully it looks like restoration (which will be a very long process) is about to start in the preliminary stages.

Bear in mind RMS Titanic weighed in at 46,000 tons and was nearly 100 feet shorter in length than the SS United States. Sadly she has been completely stripped inside but good news things are starting to get moving. The SS United States in Philadelphia and the 45,000 ton battleship USS New Jersey in Camden New Jersey are a very short distance apart so if you visit Philly they are both a sight to behold (plus you can tour 'Big J' which is an awesome experience).

As she is today

The Italian liner SS Andrea Doria had several cars in its hold when it sank in 1956, including a Citroen DS, a Rolls Royce and the Ghia-built Chrysler Norseman concept car, which most of the Chryco people involved in its creation never actually saw in the metal:

The bottom of the Atlantic Ocean is possibly the best place for a Renault in my humble opinion.

Robert Ballard, now Bob, was on R2 the otherday and said that he found Tit A Nic by 'accident'.

It was a cover for a search for two lost UScold war subs.

They couldn't find them as there had been a huge earth quake which had moved the tectonic plates and they had dropped into a crevice made by this quake.

The Titanic was nowhere near where it went down due to the same.

I'll get my anorak.

Am I the only one getting sick of hearing about the Titanic? Yes it was a disaster, and I appreciate the effect it had on western psyche at the time, but most of it is nothing more than a money making exercise.

Sorry old bean I was interested from when it was bought up.

Yes I totally agree there are people who have had f'call interest until now, one month prev - if that and now see £$

I have things going back to the Sunday Express magazine Exclusive of when it was found.

Indeed, being at uni in Belfast means I get bombarded with the crap of titanic visitor attractions and history when I'm over there, I thought I'd be safe when I got here but no, apparently our local news and such like have decided that Southampton is incredibly important in this story as well.. If they wanted to celebrate a fucking ship do something that actually means something like the Empre Windrush.

As for ship shite, MV Orange Star seemed to be where it was at until recently:

It was an old ship used to transport orange juice for years and seemed to get the boat boys interested, although it seems it has gone to meet its maker in the past year.

You said it. My son's learning about it in school at the minute, so I took the kids to Cobh (formerly Queenstown :D ) on Sunday.

There was bugger all doing, except very shop/pub/restaurant in town flogging Titanic t-shirts and baseball caps. €24 for 2 adults and 2 children to see a visitor centre? No thanks. I would've expected the place to have plenty of Titanic attractions on a bank holiday weekend, but no...

Last time I was there Ross there was a small museum in the railway station and the former White Star line offices were a pub which served half decent food. It was pretty understated.

Has it all changed now ?

Among all the Titanic hoopla very little has been made of this little ship - which actually played a part in the story, and is an incredible survivor. Only surviving White Star Line ship, and preserved in Belfast. The SS Nomadic.

My favourite nautoshite is this:

SSM10755.JPG

The Royal iris. The biggest and best Mersey Ferry, also known as the floatin' chippie - yes, it had a fish & chip shop on board. Also a ballroom, in which the Beatles, and many other bands, played over the years. Currently languishing in Woolwich., where the owner apparently has "plans" for her, but seems to do nothing. A campaign to save the ship has been ongoing for a while, but unless the current owner sells, I fear the worst.

Excellent US equivalent is this:

ldsXj.St.5.JPG?height=366&width=600

The Kalakala. Streamlined art deco car ferry. Looks like it's being restored.

Sad times about Royal Iris, it seems that HMS Plymouth has been lost this year and is merely waiting to go... sad times.

New contender for marine shite: "Caspian Sea Monster"

Another clever Soviet idea of using ground effect vehicles to dart around on the water's surface at 300mph carrying anti-ship missiles etc.

After it was scrapped some of the ships fixtures and fittings were then bought by Pontins for their holiday camp at Heysham Lancashire. They used the bits and created a Ship themed Entertainment hall Called the SS Berengaria which was fantastically naff... I took this photo in 2005 Shortly before it was demolished.

SCTSH_ANDY was talking (at extreme length) about the Titanic the other day. He was saying the Titanic was actually the Olympic dressed up because it had been critically damaged in an earlier accident. It was absolutely fucked and the White Star Line wanted it scuppering for the insurance money, or something. The Titanic (now the Olympic) was actually sunk in WW1, or something. Sometimes he gets on one and it's hard to get a word in edgeways.
