I have as it happens, news from today no less.

I scrapped it.

Na not really, I did a bit more wesding to the back of the inner sill which is now completed and covered in rust converter to keep it at bay in case it starts raining again before I can paint it. Next is a patch in the rear arch which sould be quite simple followed by the front half of the inner sill.

Now for some difficult to make out pictures of some dark sections of car taken with a phone as it was going dark.

Update for November?

Apart from shite weather shite dark evenings and shite telly  :-?

Been thinking about that ARB in mine and if it's worth putting in the panda until the GT is on the road?

At some point I have to buy a windscreen and take it down to the car - 8hr round trip - as I've only found one dealer who can get hold of one, luckily he's about 45min drive from me.  It won't pass the MOT until it's fitted so It has to be done

As of today I do have an update, even if it is a small one.

This bit of inner rear arch has been welded up. It needs a hole drilling in it for a wax oil injection point and cleaning and painting.

MFR2SCr.jpg?1

The very last piece of structural rust is also i the process of being cut out. After this there is only one more bit of rust to cut out and that is completely cosmetic. This is at the front of the inner sill where yet another useless patch was welded on top of festering metal and just needs a little more 'persuasion' before it is removed, but it started raining so I sacked that off for another day.

My brother once bought a Lancia Y10 Turbo. Would have been awesome when it was in good order, but by the time my brother got it, the turbo was almost completely defective (resulting in an almost neck-breaking experience when the engine was cutting out)  and the amount of rust present would lead almost any one to have grave concerns over the validity of it's last MOT.... it was a really bad purchase :-((((

Kudos to the OP for taking on the job to patch it up, looks like it's been a long journey!!!

Todays report:

It has been quite a momentous day as the last section of structural rot has been cut out. Here it is:

LGVPgLY.jpg?1

And here is the spot it used to occupy at the front of the passenger side inner sill/ floor pan

exUPM5y.jpg?2

I have also started welding this back up, the patch to the floor pan is now almost done but I had to stop when it became too dark to see what I as welding. Just visible is the beam from the torch I was using to see what I was welding. I hate Greenwich Mean Time.

mIajLSW.jpg?1

I have also painted up a few previously competed sections today,In the next couple of days it looks s if it is going to rain so I will try and find some time to get the outer sill ready to be welded on when the inner is done and then Sunday is looking like the next good day for outside welding so I should hopefully have this section completed before the end of the week.

The end is certainly in sight now.

Heroic stuff, such a lot of impressive work in this thread, it must be creeping nearer to seeing the road soon!

Aye, what that Phil said. Good on you for sticking with it Phil.

I hate GMT too. There seems to be bugger-all day left once we're back from work. November officially sux.

Heart skipped a beat half way down the page there. Hero spec thread, KEEP AT IT MAN

I think I need to borrow you to do some tiny weeny itsy bitsy little areas of welding on my wedges.  Should take you about two seconds.

Today's welding is nothing particularly exciting but is another good chunk out the way.

This section of the inner sill was quick to make and welded in nicely, there was just plenty of welding to be done on this patch so it took a while overall with  5 minute break at 11am for some silence and by the time this was welded in I went for a run followed by a spot of lunch.

rko18bn.jpg?1

And here is is from under-neath. This won't be falling off in a hurry.

nrt7pVd.jpg?2

Finally this afternoon I moved onto the last section of the inner sill area of this car. The front jacking point was looking a bit rough so it also got chopped out. This turned out to be quite awkward to remove without chopping what I had just welded into smithereens so it did once again take more time than I was expecting. By the time I was done and had cleaned up the surrounding metal and made the patch it had LITERALLY got a bit dark. However I was determined to get this done before the end of the day so ended up welding this together with only the light from the end of the welding torch. I thought this went well, however after seeing this photograph I think it will need a wizz over with the grinder and possibly some re-welding as its not too pretty to say the least.

Next I think it is time for the outer sill on this side once all the inner sill is painted up.

This is just absurd, you appear to be nearly finished.

PhilB - so when you started the thread you said it looks like a weldathon. Just wondering - has it been?  :P

Seriously though - what dedication! Great work!

Phil what welder do you use, and did you just pick a welder up and learn, or did you take a course or something first?

I've had some success with mine, but since I lent it to a friend it came back buggered. I need a new liner, handle and everything, so the bit I did on the Sierra wasn't up to much.

Excellent work on the Lancia, Phil... you're shaming me into cracking on with the Maserati soon-ish (there's a heavily-corroded V8 Disco on the ramps at the moment so it won't be for a week or two).

I have been using a Clarke 135TE mig welder. It does gas and gassless, so I have a roll of gassless wire sat around just in case of emergency.

I would soon like to upgrade to something a little more powerful but it has done an excellent job. I've had to change the tips, shroud and the swans neck on the torch but has otherwise been perfect though a vast amount of welding.

I learned to weld by myself, I started on a couple of pieces of scrap metal, using various settings and trying different techniques and posted my results on tinternet to get some constructive criticism.  I then started by welding up my Fiesta, followed by the Maxi, and so on. With each car I have got better at welding. Through this thread it is fairly obvious my welding has improved.

One thing that is worth investing in is a auto-dimming welding mask. Makes life so much easier, just get a reasonably good quality one.

Cool yeah, I always fancied some of those tiny goggles, like what Tom Waits wears in some of his videos. Just because the masks are really cumbersome. I use this:

http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/mig110en-turbo-no-gas-mig-welder

And it only goes up to 100 amps according to the spiel... do you reckon that's enough how many amps do you use?

One thing I don't understand is why they have a fully variable wire speed , but not a fully variable power setting. You're stuck with HI, LOW 1, 2.

Full-face mask is advisable, Edd, arc welding kicks out the sort of ultraviolet light (UVB, I believe) that even a 50+ spf sunblock won't touch.

Yeah, I have got pretty badly burnt before welding in tight areas where my mask would not fit. By closing my eyes and truning my head slightly half of my face was red raw the next day.

Ed: these leather welding masks are popular on the Continent, if you prefer small round glasses:

Alternatively, why not protect your gonads too with a "Bolix" mask?

The current is varied with the wire speed apparently.

If anybody fancys a really shite welding experience I've got a 100 amp clarke in the shed that needs a new torch and might not work on gas,  free to any of you guys.

I've got a little 100a Clarke and it's a cracker

No news yet. An XM bleeding LHM has been taking up most of my time and what little time I have been able to spend on the Lancia has been spent getting all the old underseal, rust, paint and assorted detritus out of the replacement sill I am getting ready for the passenger side, which would make for reading even more boring than usual.

I should hopefully have something worth saying in a couple of weeks time...

An amount of progress has occurred, admittedly not very much but there you go, d'ya wana fight about it?

I have done some work on the passenger side outer sill, ready for it to go on. Having learned from my mistakes on the other side, this time I am going to cut more good metal out of the sill so that the new one will be welded on at the original seams top and bottom and then seam welded down each end on to what is currently there.

I will also be making sure that this sill is complete and sound before it is attached to the car, something that seems disarmingly obvious now I am doing it for a second time. I have set to cutting out the rust and putting in new metal, the rust on this sill is around the area where it attaches onto the lower rear quarter so will need to be fixed in two layers. With this I have also added the lip back onto the lower edge of the sill which had disintegrated. Uninteresting pictures below:

We have a little more progress on the Lancia. I'm hoping to have an MOT on it before the end of the Month.

I'm currently in the process of rebuilding the front suspension, which is about as rusty as the rest of the car and so everything is ceased, which is fun.

Here's what the front suspension looks like, a fairly standard set up The anti-roll bar has already been removed at this point (mitts off you Panda owners)

SoYgfWd.jpg?1

And here it is removed on the other side, eventually. Of course I managed to rip a CV boot and pull the drive shaft out of the gearbox so it poured its oil all over the drive and generally smells like Satan's piss.

CvaXe5C.jpg?1

Now in a thrilling turn of events that I cannot imagine any of you were expecting, here's the suspension in bits on my garage floor:

I2aCfL9.jpg?1

I have started cleaning these up, de-rusting and painting all the various components. It will have new shocks, springs, track control arms, track rod ends, ball joints, ARB bushes, brake hoses, brake pads and discs. It's going to be a fairly comprehensive rebuild all round.

q4cfvYS.jpg?1

Once this is all painted and back together on the car, I'll make a start on the other side. While I've been waiting for paint to dry I have been working on fabricating the passenger sill and cutting out the un-needed metal on the car so that this new sill fits as well as possible.

Jobs to do for an MOT:

Complete front suspension rebuild

Finish fabricating and weld on passenger sill

Bleed front and rear brakes

Sort out windscreen washers

Put all the electrics back together and test

Refit interior

It's going to have hammerite covered sills and an odd door but I'm fairly confident of an MOT before May, all ready for Shitefest.
