Anyone fancy a C-Class?

I've recently managed to acquire a P-reg Mercedes C-Class, which is a nice enough thing but doesn't really fit into the fleet at the moment. It's a C250D, which means it get a 5-pot diesel with no turbo, and the gearbox is a 4-speed auto. It's MoT'd until around August time (exact date to be confirmed) and has had a shedload of money spent on it over the last few years. It does have a number of issues though, which I will list without further ado:-

-Needs a bloody good service - it runs rather lumpy at low revs. It smooths out over about 2,000rpm though, and makes a nice 5-pot warble at higher revs.

-Kickdown doesn't work, so if you want to take it over about 3,000 revs you have to change gear manually. It drives fine in "D" if you're not in too much of a hurry though, and all the gears engage OK. If you do use it as a manual the engine is surprisingly revvy for a diesel, pulling happily to 5,000rpm, and sounds good too.

-Cruise control doesn't work, nor does the intermittent setting for the wiper, and the wiper just sweeps back and forth normally à la Citroën CX - it doesn't do the Mercedes jiggle thing any more. Still clears the screen well enough though. Speedo is temperamental too.

-Paintwork is patchy in places and the sills have been painted black. There are odd rust scabs here and there, but nothing major, and better than some P-reg Mercs I've seen.

-The exhaust back box is currently in the boot. It's not excessively noisy as it is though.

Other than that it's OK - starts fine, doesn't overheat, lights and heater etc. all work fine. It's done around 172K. Here's a couple of shit pictures - I'll take more when I manage not to oversleep and be running late for work.

Autoshite price is £350.

That don't look too shabby for £350, Especially for a diesel, are these worth a bit of coin for export?

Those rear lights remind me:- When did you last see a MK 3 Astra Saloon?

If that doesn't make it's starting pirce and a little on top at absolute minimum on eBay I'll show my arse in Burton's window.

can someone tell me why I spent £3500 on a Peugeot 607 diesel auto a couple of years ago? I have no idea

Ebay is the last resort TBH - I haven't had good experiences with selling modern [sic] cars on there. I might bung it on Gumtree at the weekend though.

Took the car out for a drive yesterday and then took it to Tescos earlier this evening, and the speedo is working fine now - not sure why it was flickering before. I also tried the electric sunroof and can confirm it works. Front windows and the remote locking work too - rear windows are keep fit. It also has a working radio/cassette.

Funny you should say that - I was debating which one to keep out of this and the 607 - they're both comfy, reasonably refined diesel saloons with fairly similar performance. If this doesn't sell the 607 may still be going - it'd be more than £350, but a lot less than £3500...

Autotrader £595. It'll fly away, on the back of a flat bed to Belorulithupolandistan

Thhese are a great car - they go quite well, indestructible old five pot Benz diseasel, no turbo to fail - magic!

I keep coming back to this thinking, mmmm Should I???

How clean/manky is the interior? Any chance of a pic?

Any Tax?

How bad is the lumpy running at low revs. If it was a manual would not be bothered, but as its an auto?

Location? Are you in Norwich?

Cheers

Interior isn't too bad considering the seats are a fairly light colour - I've got the afternoon off today to take the Audi in for its retest so will take a couple more photos.

It's hard to describe levels of lumpiness really - the engine "chugs" when pulling at low revs but it doesn't stall or anything like that - it seems slightly down on power below about 1,500rpm but first gear on these is so low that it doesn't really affect the driving much - you can still make a quick getaway should you need to do so.

There's no tax on the car but could tax it at cost if need be. I'm about 15 miles NE of Norwich but could bring the car down to Norwich if it made life easier.

Here's a couple more pics:

Front view - as you can see, the lower half of the bumper has been painted black (not particularly brilliantly...) to match the sills.

Interior's all there - front seats could do with a clean to make them perfect (I've always thought light-coloured upholstery was a silly idea) but it's not too bad. Even has proper Mercedes-branded floor mats.

That is temptingly cheap but i have no use for it, I just want to spend a few days cleaning it up and servicing it, driving about in it and then flogging it on!

If it were an estate, I would be on the train to Norwich and the Scirocco would be advertised in the next post.
