Hullo ameegoes, not been lurking round this parish at all lately. But I just saw a personalised number plate that reminded me of one I used to see when I was about 10 or sommin back in 1990, it was H18 RAG or HI8 RAG and it was on a Benz iirc. Local to me, I saw it transfer to several other cars over the years then vanished. I saw it recently and forgot about it. Now I saw another 'HI8' prefix plate, and the a 'H8' just there. So, I never really got it. What is HI8 short for? Is it some secret thing like the flippin davinci code or somesuch? I just know a shiter will know and solve this lifelong mystery...

In 1990 it would have been H18

HI8 would need another number after to be legal. And then it would be after 2002.

However! Hi8 was also camcorder tape medium developed by Sony. But that's not important right now.

I had a Volvo 480 with H18 HGV as the reg number. No idea what that stood for either..

With a couple of coloured screws you could make it look like HIS HGV.

Not entirely sure I understand you there, sir. HI 8 (capital "I") would be an Irish plate, probably very old, but would have been issued without a bunch of letters after the number.* H18 (numerals 1 and 8 ) could have been issued any time after 1990. As I understand it, DVLA held back the first 20 of every prefix combination for exactly this purpose, to be sold as "private plates" at a later date. Prefixes began in 1983. I believe it was about 1988/89 that they started selling the then-current prefix with any 1-20 combination and group of letters that the buyer chose (subject to approval). Some of those may even still be available.

*Aha, lightbulb moment: are you thinking of the current practice, in which combinations such as DG 52 KLX appear? (Our old PT Cruiser, used purely for example) I believe that a) the letter I is not being used in these and B) number combinations beginning with 8 have not yet been issued.

Of course it's possible that any or all of the above could be wrong, faulty or just plain bullshit and I will accept no liability for any claims arising therefrom, for whatever reason. :wink:

You couldn't make it up... I just had to edit that post! In the second line I typed, I refer in brackets to the numerals 1 and 8, closing the bracket immediately after the 8. My computer recognised that as the code for this smiley: 8) so that's what appeared in the text. Be careful what you type, eh? Who would have thought it....

And sorry for the thread detour, but I just had to share.

Chap I know is a St. Helens Rugby fan. The reg on his car is H8 WGN. It's because he doesn't like Wigan's rugby club.

Surely if it's a Scottish spot it's a Hibs fan?

Over this side of the country, that's certainly the case, so this might be on the money. There's hundreds of the buggers across Edinburgh/Lothian/Fife: all sorts of variations on H 185 xxx, H 18 Sxx, HIB 5xxx, and H 188 EEx. Must be the easiest club in the land to buy a vanity plate for!

Just locally, we've got H18S GD, H18S OK, and H18S BN. I've yet to see C488AGE, which would have to be the ultimate ultimate Hibbees plate... :lol:

The H8 WGN one is pure class, tho'.

It's C18 LAR you'd want to worry about as likely 4 skin heads and Rene will get out of it!

There used to be a car that tooled around Linlithgow where I used to live with the number H18BBE which is the local term 'the Hibees' or Hibernian Football Club, as mentioned earlier in the thread.

I dont care for football but I thought the plate was pretty nice.

* cough cough* West Bromwich Albion seem to have a lot of supporters in this part of the world and of course it's quite distinctive so you easily notice them :D Some have even got them in the WBA *** format. Aston Villa are a lot more difficult though. I've seen V 1 LLA, but that's about all that you can do :(

1 = A

8 = H

AH = Adolf Hitler, or so I'm told.

Or maybe the owner likes Sikorsky helicopters.

Indeed - drive past the stadium on a match day and every second car has an H18 registration!

The Hibs suggestion sounds more likely for a Glasgow-based car :wink:

I lived in and around Glasgow for over ten years and never met a Hibs supporter. :D

Rangers or Sellik all the way...

lol true, but still more likely than German-speaking Glaswegian nazis with a penchant for cryptically-personalised number plates :lol:

Glasgow ≠ Edinburgh

Yeah, I got that. The comment before mine was about Glasgow hence wot I said.

You;d be surprised :lol::lol:

Haha thanks for the replies, indeed Hibs fans are few and far between on this side of the land - if they're here, they don't admit it..

Well I always wondered if the H18 RAG was meant to mean "hate rags" coz they were richy-rich bitches. Certainly, back in 1990 a Benz had a bit more meaning than today where every third car is a Deutschmobile of some sort.

Probably just a pair of Nazis all the same :mrgreen:
