WHO DID IT WORSE?

The 1975-81 Mack F-series semi-tractor.

_76_20Mack_20Cruise-Liner.jpg.6a5c06c153257d11887917c3b6852b2a.jpg

The white one is tin-plate and states Buddy L Corp. Japan

The red one is die-cast and unbranded, but it states Mack Cruiseliner 1/45 Made in Macau

The Mack Cruise-Liner was the 'fancier' version of Mack's 'F' model cab-over trucks. It had more chrome & a better interior than the 'regular' cab-over.

Why do I like Cruise-Liners?

Because of Pig Pen's 'Love Machine'

So, where do you all keep your diecast? I had to seriously thin out my more recent purchases as I'm trying to keep 95% of it in two large boxes under the spare room bed. My issue is that I've got a fairly addictive personality, so have to work really hard to rein things in!

Until we moved, and in so doing finding a bunch of stuff I'd forgotten even having, I hadn't realised just how much of it there is.. It's all still in boxes at the moment in the attic until the house is decorated and the new carpets laid, I was hoping to have one of the upstairs back bedrooms but the management's extensive collection of old audio equipment has pretty much filled it. However, I've been using the attic in the barn as a parts store so I might put some shelves up in here and a cabinet or two if they come up at a reasonable price. Excuse the mess, pretty much everything out of the shed was stuffed into two Volvos when we left and hurriedly decanted a month ago.

Attic in the barn. Winning.

That's undoubtedly the ultimate hidey hole for a chap and his diecast collection.

Mostly in plastic storage boxes in the loft, with four display cabinets for the nicest ones. Thankfully the loft is large and I've boarded it and put lights in, so I can sit up there and sort them out

White helmets here, although perhaps it's because it's further north.. I don't know. A shopping trip to Dumfries was made worthwhile this morning when we went past a junk shop which was actually open. I wasn't expecting anything before Monday, but haven't really been paying much attention. My diecast senses were twitching as soon as we were inside (getting in practice for the boot sales) and the quarry located. Corgi XJS was quite clean for a fiver and there's two Corgi Rally Beetles in there, one missing a bonnet.

So, the white helmets.. These just had to be rescued from the box as I've never had any, although I know they've been mentioned here before. No others, I did have a look.

This Minix Corsair was in there too, along with a similar example in red missing its axles and an 1100 and HA Viva similarly afflicted. This seemed worth picking up.

Finally this. I do have a better civilian one in green with a wonky rear bumper so it was nice to find this complete and just asking for a repaint better than the gold Humbrol/shaving brush effort it currently sports. It was the first thing I spotted, thought it was a Dinky until I picked it up. Some interesting corrosion on the drivers' corner but it should clean up alright. I think the wheels are different on the green one and it doesn't have white tyres from memory. Will have to go and excavate it later.

It's a sad day today.

My local emporium of diecast goodies has closed 😢

That right hand window was full of delicacies last week 😭

Which was when I bought this:

These arrived today

The quality is rather good, but the Nissan's tailgate is a different shade with insufficient coverage on the bottom and the Buick's driver side door doesn't open/ close properly. Other than that, I'm rather pleased with them.

also a Kenner Fast 111s with Arkansas plate. As I understand it there's an almost limitless number of combinations

I didn't, wondered whether they might be your sort of thing. I'll get a photo next time, they were four quid each but could be haggled a bit I should have thought.

No, mine is a bit tidier than that. Got it with the Cadillac which went to you and the Corvair which might have ended up with the Doctor. Although yours has white tyres  so perhaps mine does too. Cba to go and look now.

Yum. I have the red one but I'd like that too. Think that should have done it purple to much the 2nd colour they released originally

I agree on the purple, it's my favourite out of the three, seems the best quality too.

I’ve ended up making some axles from some jumbo paper clips. Unfortunately to make some wheels for the Zephyr, a Corgi Classics Morris 1000 pick up died. It’ll have an afterlife in the garden though, a broken Renault 12 sits underneath the pyracantha on a sleeper simulating a roadway.

They don't list that one - they've also deleted the 32 pickup, 911 and 36 Ford Sedan off the website

At last - a set of Golden Jacks wheels for my P6 - not quite the right ones though, but they were cheap

While I was up in the loft I gathered all the mini Hot Wheels I could find that have lights. Other than the Ferrari I got recently, this is the only one I can get working

the "moderns" which have a box are in boxes in the spare room upstairs.

sadly i seem to be always short on space, thats cos someone keeps on buying more and more old toys.

though having seen the more extensive collections other folks own, either on Youtube or similar, and on this thread show that i am only "playing" at collecting, and not doing it "seriously"

Some really nice stuff in there!

These are my cabinets, 1st two are mostly larger stuff, a couple of my restos and customs among them

this one's all older Hot Wheels, redlines and blackwalls. Camera doesn't like the LEDs in here

Lastly this one is full of 1:64 customs, trouble is I've done so many I can't fit them all in!

I sympathize, dude - my substantial diecast reduction from three years ago was also motivated by trying to reduce the required storage space to something compatible with domestic harmony.

In my case, it was agreed that four IKEA toyboxes should be sufficient to house a collection - three for storage, and one to house the boxes of those on display at any given time.

603674638_IMG_20210423_2022252.thumb.jpg.d960a07bbffc91dfdd20a0b5012880d5.jpg

Now, these lived in the attic, but they've been in the back bedroom for a while now.

Box 1 is mostly modern  1/43: Vanguards and those French Altaya/IXO partworks, plus a few stray Vitesse.

1462385806_IMG_20210423_2022572.thumb.jpg.1d4b3999a20023496af8486919698ac3.jpg

Box 2 is the "heritage collection" - my Matchbox Dinky and Corgi Classics stuff from the 1980s/90s, my Soviet-era diecast nabbed from market stalls in the mid-90s, plus various other oddities and loose models.

1845501408_IMG_20210423_2023122.thumb.jpg.4a5ab6a3bdaaef73a35a3354133b148a.jpg

Box 3 is mostly 1/72 and thereabouts - boxed Matchbox old and new, Hongwell Cararama, Oxford Diecast, EFE, Tomica and Johnny Lightning (many of these are just the empty boxes for those on display, mind).

913462576_IMG_20210423_2023262.thumb.jpg.a09d6cf51e1566266390ed7076b2e591.jpg

Box 4 is meant to be just empty display boxes, but has become more of a storage box for Vanguards overspill and the temporary repository for some of my tat market finds.

1387930548_IMG_20210423_2023472.thumb.jpg.2c67c231b5cad61d0ec4e7fdd2725722.jpg

There's also a shoebox sized container for unboxed Matchbox-sized stuff, and another the same for Kingsize stuff.

Which, in display terms, translates as...

Two 1/43 display cases by the front door area:

1376697228_IMG_20210423_1955182.thumb.jpg.06dde65fcd0aba07fbaba274d4aae349.jpg

One contains mostly the recent-ish Russki models from the market back in December, plus some of the more recent arrivals from Shiters.

2026920844_IMG_20210423_1955262.thumb.jpg.3f36537f5064f826130d5ac0e0fe935a.jpg

The second displays some more of the recent Jumajo acquisitions, and a couple of Vanguards received back in December alongside some other odds and sods.

1088458451_IMG_20210423_1955352.thumb.jpg.5b627b439586233d326cb8a19b92f0a6.jpg

Upstairs, it's the back bedroom which doubles as a display area - an old 1940s bureau with what was originally a glass-door bookcase up top, but now contains the bulk of the loose Corgi Collection...

1666407411_IMG_20210423_2022052.thumb.jpg.ec89e9d62bef7723b6e5ac351e904575.jpg

There's only three shelves in there with a lot of wasted space, but I have three more shelves cut and just needing installed, which should double the amount of space available...

Which is handy, as the (mostly) boxed Corgi are stacked up top, waiting for me to finally get the finger out.

169849435_IMG_20210423_2021512.thumb.jpg.79c401c305e0390132a018fdd56caab0.jpg

I do like seeing the boxes, though. However, leaving them stacked like that is probably doing them no favours, long-term.

Above the bed in the back room, then...

1899708656_IMG_20210423_2022392.thumb.jpg.0c03020d94d465529581848e2fa02062.jpg

(Ignore the stripey effect, that's the lampshade)

It's the smol stuff - mostly Hongwell Cararama in the first one...

1959313765_IMG_20210423_2022394.thumb.jpg.12d229fc47a255c6a03f180dfc9bf895.jpg

With a couple of Real-X in the mix, and a stray Oxford Diecast Capri.

Whilst in the second display (which started life as TK Maxx pinboards, to which I added glass shelving and a lick of paint)...

11823928_IMG_20210423_2022393.thumb.jpg.18cce93ad8a709762ac6947a4b76e1b7.jpg

Mostly Oxford Diecast, with a couple of Hongwells and some EFE for good measure.

These are horribly dusty, as I got some slide-in glass covers cut but my choice of fixing to hold the glazing in proved useless and I still haven't bothered my lazy arse to re-engineer it all.

So yeah... I would like to have more display space, especially for the 1/43 models. On the other hand, my books and vinyl collection also take up a fair bit of room in the house, and it's not fair for MrsDC to have to have all her stuff crammed away just because I can't keep a lid on my collecting tendencies/compulsions... It's also quite nice to rummage through the IKEA boxes every now and again and change the displays round, and reacquaint myself with the contents.

My fantasy would be a detached double garage with a room above it, containing a number of display cases for all my models, a large comfy settee big enough to recline opposite the linear hi-fi unit I built a while back, and some substantial bookshelves. Throw in a kettle and a small fridge, and I think I could be quite content...
