If it’s any consolation the Mk10 got repainted red and now sits at my dads house on display

Heh, that's good to know - funnily enough, I also painted it red and silver using Humbrol enamels, and to be fair it looked pretty good (for a nine-year-old) - but the paint very quickly chipped off in my big bucket o' diecast so I scraped it all off with a Stanley knife blade and then did nothing with it for the next thirty years.

I'd like to think that Miss Massey has since forgiven me, though I'm fairly sure she suspected I was hanging back after class to dip into her diecast box of 1960s Lesney.

In a retributive karma event, loads of my Matchbox and Corgi ended up in my mum's classroom (at the same school, though she wasn't teaching when I went there) and then got left behind when she retired, so... circle of life, wheel of fortune, and all that...

Some wee toerag has probably long since made off with my Superkings Matra Rancho and Plymouth Gran Fury.

Now that is nice... well bought! Lovely proportions, and not one I've seen before.

Weren’t Spot on models a good deal more expensive new than Dinkies etc?

Yeah, I think they were quite a bit dearer... Lines Bros positioned them as kind of the pinnacle of toy cars, and seemed happy to go for quality over volume - and I understand it gave Dinky a bit of a scare, forcing them to increase the scale and detail of their models to avoid looking small and inferior in comparison.

But once Lines Bros bought out Meccano and hence Dinky in 1964, the Spot-On range seemed less necessary and, as the smaller-selling brand, started to be wound down for new releases. The loss of tooling in the 1967 fire at the Belfast factory just hastened what was probably going to happen anyway.

I'll see if I can find some same-year price lists for Spot-On and Dinky, just to see what the price difference was for similar models (e.g. the Anglia 109E mentioned above).

Weirdly, the trailer spent its first nine years as a standalone mainline model (MB2), but yes - always in a complementary colour to whatever the MB1 Mercedes Truck was painted in.

1384280616_MB01MB02MercedesTruckTrailer.jpg.63d80e8a48e065ebad53411effdb4960.jpg

It then survived for another 16 years as part of various twin packs, clocking up an impressive 25 years in the range (1967-1992).

Seems that BB's yellow version only ever came as part of the 1985/86 Unimog Snow Plough twin pack.

Although it was still badged 'Mercedes Trailer', its final outing saw it being pulled by a Dodge Commando as a twin pack for the 'Big Top Circus' range.

I see both colours of Cosmic Blues (another pair I had as a kid), a very nice looking Pi-Eyed Piper and the Adams Drag Star, an original 16 Python and the Piston Popper

Yes, that is a 1967 first-series Hot Wheels Silhouette

Blue Cosmic Blues was actually Sierraman's one, but it crept into shot to be with the white Cosmic Blues.  Should be Cosmic Whites then.

Adams Drag-Star was grabbed for a couple of Quids because I was was so extremely embarrassed for owning one without the MAG FRONT WHEELS.  Now sorted and will transfer over from this donor. Before anyone else notices

I think you'll find that's 105E; 109E was the Consul Classic. [/pedant]

In other news, I shot some pics today so I'll upload them when I'm on the other computer.

Thank you for the continuing history files!  I can't fault your facts from my own memory and I'm delighted to keep learning new stuff about the things I love.

Crikey.  That must have set you back some time.  And coins.

More time than money really. All well playworn, and bought before they went really mad price wise

Custom Barracuda has always been the hardest for me to find in decent shape - so much so I ended doing a repaint so I had a nice one. I can't bring myself to repaint the others, they all tell a story

Can’t quite explain why, but as a lad the HW cars always left me cold. Was it they seemed weird, being focused on customs and unknown US culture? Always seemed a bit too small too; compared to MB Monteverdi Hai and Maserati Bora, that were pawed over

I felt exactly the opposite!  I was an avid watcher of the little American telly we got back in the 60s, and my comics were DC rather than Hotspur.  I was aware of Hot Wheels from very early-on, because they were advertised in my Superman/Batman/Flash etc comics, and I knew some of the cars from seeing them on the likes of Hawaii 5-0 and Ironside.  Perhaps I was just odd...

I was buying Street Machine mag from 10 onwards so I was pretty clued up on the custom stuff, especially once I got into Rod & Custom and various other US publications. All the same, as a child I liked models of real cars that I was familiar with rather than fantasy castings. However as an adult I really like Hot Wheels so had to have the Original 16 in my collection

I was born in the 70s so maybe was playing catch-up ?

Living in Australia at turn of the 90s got me buying Rod & Custom and Classic American as well as plenty of Australian SM etc.

Unfortunately all left behind in loft after last house move. Because disorganised and exhausted. Wife was elated though!

And now, from Allan over the road, a couple of Atlas sports cars...

1909819479_Dec014.thumb.jpg.0b8385ab7312ab897853f54e3fca79f4.jpg

And a couple of Atlas copcars, including the Lancashire Zephyr I've been chasing on ebay for ages!

Don't forget, Allan has others in both series, available.  I've told him I'm showing you lot, so if you want anything, send me requests and I'll see what he's got.  Postage will be £3 up to 2kg, as usual.

And finally, my latest ebay purchase, an Oakland PD Ford Fairlane

That's another one I've been chasing since I first saw one listed, which tbf wasn't that long ago, but this one didn't run over budget for some reason so I grabbed it.  Always interested in a police car, especially American!

I posted up my Mira Taunus a few weeks back. For what I paid I expected it to be 1/43 scale and was surprised when it arrived. It is a very nicely made model though so I wasn't upset about it.

A quick question for you die cast restorers, what do you use to strip the original paint off with? I was about to use Nitromors, but thought I should ask on here in case it pits the white metal haha.

Here is as far as I've got with my model of C30 T5, plastics removed and sunroof cut out...

It was strange when I looked at the real car properly and measured it up, how curved the sunroof is on the edges...

Not sure if I should remove the doors to paint it or not, I think they were attached when originally painted...

cool eddy, more scrap spot-ons, i wouldn't mind giving them a home......

and the TR6 and Spitfire, who made them?

Usual rate Jo: £1 each plus post.  Hang on a bit and I'll see if I can find some more.

The Triumphs are Atlas, from their Sports Cars series that came in Corgi-like boxes.  Allan does have others, but no duplicates.  I can see what else there is if you're interested?  They'll be a fiver each plus post, but one payment of £3 will post a few models ;)

Caustic soda.  Save and wash out an ice-cream tub and keep it strictly for the purpose.  Put model body in.  Fill with boiling water until the model is covered.  Add a capful of caustic and stand back.  Might be best to do this outdoors!  Quite a bit of paint will be fizzed off in seconds, but you may find it takes somewhat longer to clean off the whole shell, and may even require a second bath.  It's probably also a good idea to keep a stiff toothbrush for stripping, to encourage the paint off.
