I think I own a suitable contender.

So I see..... !

We are talking the next scale up, obviously, so my original entrant will be superfluous...

post-5367-0-05759000-1514557322_thumb.jpg

Actually this is not quite the one - those two were killed by fire as a rite of passage into Big Trouser, Big School years.  This is the "parade" one that had identical livery until the "decals" were soaked back off and the VW returned to the carrying case.

So, Formula 43 it is then!

Depending upon any handicap, in other words if we say F43 Libre then I may field this survivor although it will need a suspension rebuild....

However, if we establish a handicap based on, say weight and Perceived Performance If It Was Real then I can only say that it will be time to dust off The Bludgeon...

OO scale Renault 4? WANT! Closest I'm going to get to an R6 in that scale I reckon.

I'm almost certain there was a partwork R6 in 1:76 scale about ten years back. Came as part of a two car set with each issue. Might have been 1:87 though I suppose.

Found these at home which I'd made probably about ten years ago:

got this today while in town,

111-TR2-DeAgostini.jpg

while its not a real Dinky, its a chinese repro and it cost like £3, so it won't break the bank plus it is quite a nice model, as classic Dinky's always were!

saying that i won't be buying anymore, simply cos the next few models just do not appeal to me at all (and they are increasingly expensive)

Posted

Ditto, bought one while on a visit to my old mum. Popped into newsagent to get her a paper and spotted the TR2. It's nice and of course De Agostini own Atlas which has been reproducing old Dinky stuff for a few years now. Atlas did this in the salmon pink but like you I won't be buying any more of them, gets kind of expensive as they go on.

Made the jibs from a broken Britains tractor then the base from some aluminum I had hanging around.

Just need paint and some tyres...

Some favourites from my project box:

Mercury Fiat 850 Coupe bought for 50p at a local boot sale. Amazingly undamaged and I have sourced a pair of diamond headlights from a Vanguards model (Hillman Minx iirc) which fit. Will eventually end up painted red to replicate the example that kept popping up in the later episodes of The Sweeney.

IMG_5475.jpg

Continuing the Sweeney theme, a Spot On S Type that has certainly seen better days- probably buried for a period of time going by the paint loss and dirt inside. Still saveable though I reckon. Another boot sale find picked up for just 20p.

IMG_5476.jpg

More Spot On in the shape of a Rover 3 Litre with the working lights. A straightforward looking restoration, the current blue paint job is badly orange peeled which is a good reason to paint it a more classy colour.

IMG_5478.jpg

Another Rover, this time by Dinky. A lucky find at a car show a couple of years ago sitting on a tarp in amongst a load of battered 80's Matchbox and Corgi Juniors. A steal at 50p.

IMG_5480.jpg

An ebay buy from a few years ago that fits in well with recent events on here, a Corgi Morris Cowley which has been painted by a previous owner to represent an old Minicab. The same seller had the rest of the 50's Corgi and Dinky British grey porridge "fleet" up for grabs- all in the same colour scheme. I would like to redo it as a Hackney Carriage, just need to find a period Taxi sign...

Didn't the yellow-cab version of the 59 Impala have a taxi sign on the roof that could be used?  Or the Dinky Plymouth Plaza taxi?  Failing those, how about recycling the Police sign off the roof of the Humber Hawk or Riley Pathfinder?

All these simply from memory, I take no responsibility for errors and/or omissions...

Edit: now I've done an image-search, all of the above are valid options.  The Riley has spotlights attached to the Police sign, but these are known to break off.  You wouldn't be needing them anyway.

Some nice finds there.....Particularly envious of the Dinky Rover!

That Cowley is very similar to the Corgi I found at Beaulieu last year (and indeed, my 1/1 example!).   Our local taxi firm had these in black with cream bonnets back in the day.

You can source taxi signs and jewelled headlamps from Steve Flowers http://www.model-supplies.co.uk but it gets a bit dear.   Probably best carve yourself a piece of plastic to suit the roof profile and print off a suitable scale TAXI logo.   Or, as Eddy suggests, take it off something else.   Police Pathfinders are quite cheap in scrap condition and do usually have the roof sign intact.

Jewelled headlamps are fecking dear for what they are - try searching jewellery craft kits on Ebay.  I just bought a lot of these.....

You'll get about 10 for £6 from the model supplier chaps.

Great finds, love the Fiat 850, very rare indeed. As for that Dinky Rover, a rather splendid bargain. I think that the taxis in Brighton used to be black with cream bonnets and boots some years ago, there was a company called Model Road and Rail who did a few handbuilt cars and vans, they did a Mk2 Consul as a Brighton taxi. Oh and I wish you all a happy and safe 2018 with many models becoming a part of your collections.

Thanks for the advice Eddy and MR, I already have a pair of headlights for the Fiat which are a perfect fit which came off a damaged Vanguards model, either a Series III Minx or a Mk3 Zephyr, cannot remember now. I will look into the Taxi signs on the Corgi and Dinky Yanks, I also considered one of the signs from the Vanguards Minicab range they did about a decade ago, might be a bit out of scale though.

If you can lay hands on a Vanguards taxi at a suitable price, I don't think the sign would be too far out of scale.  Worth a go!  Also yes, Steve Flowers is bound to have one available for the Corgi/Dinky options.  He also does the bumper/grille units for Spot-Ons.

Yup, also changed the front lights, wheels just needed the Sharpie treatment, dunno why Atlas did the centres black, when the wheels used were the Ghia ones that should be all silver. A nice 5 minute conversion

Entering that big bloody septic V8 must be outruled because unfair.

Unless I'm permitted to prepare a Dinky Chrysler Saratoga for the occasion, that is.

Why did they go to the trouble of putting ( too large?) engine size crests on the wings, then using S reg plates ?

Late mk1s would have had a simple 3.0 instead of the crest, although that particular number is actually off a 1978 MZ !

today i have mostly been to see the local purveyor of crap diecast.

and i've come home with these treasures.

a Corgi XJ12-C, unboxed and slightly playworn, its missing its towbar BUT it has got complete bumpers and nice paintwork

and a Corgi Rover SD1 police car. with traffic cones and police sign! again unboxed and this one doesn't roll as well as the Jaguar, but the paintwork is very, very clean, and having the accessories included makes up for any rolling deficiencies

of course these didn't come cheap, the Jaguar was a whole £3 while the Rover was an unbelievable £5 so quiet pleased to buy both!

I loved the Corgi SD1, I think this was the golden age of the firm, I had a metallic blue one as a kid, I remember getting it from 'The Family Way' toy sop in Castleford, which was in a converted chapel. That shop was brilliant for diecast toys, as they were big Corgi stockists, and they also stocked Siku, shame that shop went bust in the late 1990s, over the years, I bet my dad spent a fair few quid there, as my Raleigh Grifter XL, and my Scalextric came from there

And yes I know the Atlas police cars are far from perfect, but they are very cheap compared to a Vanguards, the Escort mk1 for instance is badged as a GT, but on the base & box says Mexico, and it didn't have front indicators on. That is getting messed about with soon, and will be getting full bumpers with over riders, and square headlamps. I like doing simple code 3 conversions, I made the Whitebox/Trofeu RS2k mk2 right hand drive, as I wanted a RHD beaky, and Trofeu issues are ££££££'s. I just wish there was a UK partwork of 1/43 scale bog standard chod like Onions, Tinas, Austins & Rovers, Vauxhalls etc from the 1970s & 80s, wished I'd kept my red Simca collection Alpine, as that was right hand drive!

Posted

I have the Police SD1 and the Triplex racer, and really love the weird four-spoke wheels the latter came fitted with.

Testing my new photo host, with this code 3 converted Atlas Escort & Vanguards Escort, did a bit of swappage of parts, I think the red un looks a bit 'twinkie' now
