So I could line it up with the equivalents from Corgi and McToys

Like a lot of newer Matchbox, it's tiny! No bad thing, as the detail is good. Even notorious cheapskates Corgi gave us opening doors on the Juniors though...

I love Corgi 2cvs as they came with the 1970s square headlights which I don't think anyone else has modelled.

@Lord Sterling

Looks to be the MB10 Willys Jeepster in dark blue - one of those early 2024 releases that never seemed to make it to the UK last year!

1948 Willys Jeepster. These have been out for a long while. I saw them last year in the same place.

I’ll be passing through Tenerife South next week, I’ll check it out there, last year they had an XJC so miracles can happen in their departure shops. No sign of any Guisval yet, supposedly they’re sold in petrol stations but I don’t fancy a hike down the carreterra.

I grabbed the Nova, probably best there was no price on this as it was somewhat eye watering! I really liked the Mercedes in this series too but the price out me off at the time.

Anyway, it's pretty cool

I do like those Hot Wheels 1/43s - though there's a vague irony that a lot of collectors (especially on Vanguards collector pages) seem to be claiming that 1/43 models are dying as a collectable scale because younger collectors are all about Hot Wheels and 1/64 in general - yet here we are with an expanding range of 1/43 by Hot Wheels widely available at multinational chain stores.

Mercedes looks awesome, though I haven't seen one in real life yet.

Lotta guys in their twenties with tattoo sleeves, short beards, and wearing gilets with heating company logos on cruising the Mattel aisles round here... guess they gotta find the money to fix the fucked turbo on their financed Transit Custom somehow...

Repsol petrol stations often sell Guisval though obviously not the kind of places you want to spend your holiday searching 😅

That really is tiny!

Reminds me a bit of the Tomica version of the 2CV, which was similarly quite titchy and finely modelled - Maisto and Corgi look like massive bruisers in comparison.

Made it to April 84

That's just about when I sold it. It was  full of rust under that red paint and the engine was well passed its best. It was my first car that had started as an old Beetle. I learned to drive in it and a few months after passing my test I crashed it. I brought a kit of fibreglass parts and cut of all the bent bits and replaced them with the Baja panels.

I’m not a a Hot Wheels man myself despite having a fair few mint ones from the early 90’s. But I liked it when they brought back the Hare Splitter about 10 years back.

£400 for the Mustang and he’s written 1972 on the box? It’s like charging £60 for a bag of salad then wiping your nob on it in front of the customer first.

Yup, a bit of a scoot round the Friday market was in order. It's been a while.

First up was Nostalgic Collectables, home of the irascible Market Blokey.

Actually some decent stuff to be found this week; not a vast amount, but some okay bits and pieces. Not very cheap at £10 a go, though.

IMG_20250404_0901332.jpg.e8afcb74842e144fa9adab9d788d0460.jpg

The Superkings Volvo estate is one I've yet to own; metallic green for preference, though a red one would do nicely too.

I'm not so struck on the rally support version - it's pretty good, but not quite as appealing and while this one had relatively little chipping, the paper stickers looked like they'd got oil or something on them, so I passed.

The Superkings Leyland tipper was very very clean; most of the others were good if mildly tatty, bar the Matchbox Porsche 924 which was missing the rear hatch and had 'whitewall tyres' courtesy of a bottle of TippEx.

Late 1960s Corgi Classics Rolls Royce Silver Ghost was nice, but was it £20-nice?

IMG_20250404_0901472.jpg.d4f6affd124db5dbc5dabe53a3e71de1.jpg

I couldn't make up my mind. So, no.

The cheapo £3 table was a bit same-old, but...

IMG_20250404_0901062.jpg.c316a9e44e43c8250e3a053a4f2e6d70.jpg

... what's this?

IMG_20250404_0901063.jpg.ea42fefd34f0fbd15f7bb62ee7458567.jpg

Well, a K-9 Fire Tender of course, it's right there on the box.

Not quite mint, but jolly good overall condition.

While I was dithering over whether or not to begin a collection of 1970s fantasy vehicles, a man in an ironic cap and sporting an ironic moustache scooped it up and bought it instead. Probably ironically.

Ah well.

Over at the Charity Stall, things were also hotting up:

IMG_20250404_0952022.jpg.4abb77b9394c23ced970b676a61a4502.jpg

Mmm, Dinky Range Rover.

IMG_20250404_0952062.jpg.b2cc89479f68f2ed98357f566ba51abb.jpg

Hand-painted Corgi SM was... ambitious.

Large tanker by Mira:

IMG_20250404_0952112.jpg.b8c6f7f44ee6e5494cb5624866b16ea2.jpg

Some nice stuff, but Larry the stallholder was perpetually engaged in earnest discussions with a punter each time I passed, so I never did find out what his prices were.

He's not usually cheap, though.

Colin on the Irish Tat Stall didn't have much fresh stock, though these JDM Majorettes were in the loose cars box:

IMG_20250404_0933342.jpg.5b398bbbe61832ec32ea3acf77ca8552.jpg

Kinda look like they're illustrations. Weird.

Looks like he'd scored well at the auctions.

Quite a mix of oldish and newish stuff; I hadn't really time for a proper rummage, but some interesting oddities seemed to be lurking:

I found a few bits of base, but the doors and the centre part of the floor were missing.

Originally it would have looked like this:

budgie_toys_202_refrigeration_truck.jpg.d2864d9edc15b327474e87aeb550033e.jpg

Didn't see the tractor unit in the boxes either.

But it's true, all that hot tat action gets me hot under the collar.

Bit of breakfast was needed before heading into the office.

But I also picked this up...

IMG_20250404_1206392.jpg.1442cb5d1990613f5a0d5078f2b26363.jpg

It's a wholesaler catalogue from 1962 - from an outfit known as Sandle's, in London:

IMG_20250404_1207032.jpg.025dd8a8f373686db9ad092b55591281.jpg

But why, I hear you ask?

Well...

IMG_20250404_1209342.jpg.da679865fa10364539abb0f606279a96.jpg

I'm sort of interested in how these were sold, back in the day.

IMG_20250404_1209202.jpg.f3f39483dae5b49793ed640ce63fc3cd.jpg

Budgie too:

IMG_20250404_1209052.jpg.269c686e9f9a5c8feba102af7bfa2f8b.jpg

So the aforementioned #202 Refrigerated Truck had an RRP of 4s 6d, back in 1962 - including Purchase Tax at a fairly steep 25%.

IMG_20250404_1209482.jpg.4b539c55b1261f21aedd16f413ba8067.jpg

Some Lone Star, as well. No Corgi, slightly surprisingly - though maybe they were easier to deal with directly, if you were a shopkeeper.

And lots of these no-name tinplate and plastic toys, too:

IMG_20250404_1222282.jpg.c0f92a66ee63ac6c264ca160f955c6ec.jpg

IMG_20250404_1210012.jpg.cc756701feb20334bfee65768fa2d042.jpg

IMG_20250404_1222492.jpg.de73f46c6ba3271b6e4bc7c0ac93c003.jpg

IMG_20250404_1224112.jpg.6cf1439d4df8ecbea223c84ebbe01ec4.jpg

IMG_20250404_1224482.jpg.085f1ffea15f32efda06cb5e10874c3d.jpg

IMG_20250404_1224272.jpg.b2203a226d5beb4d9bb67255d04c5c8c.jpg

It's not all toy vehicles - much of the catalogue is books, jigsaws, dolls etc - but it is an absolute treasure trove of information. I'll enjoy looking through this.

Posted

Lastly, I called into Smyth's on my way home.

Nothing very exciting - though they have slashed the price of some of their slower-selling Hot Wheels Premiums:

IMG_20250404_1809082.jpg.8aefae768e56c70b63168b5b558982c4.jpg

I didn't nab this one, though.

They also had the full Surf's Up Silverline collection, and - finally - a Hot Wheels mainline 2025 C-case had been unpacked, a bit.

IMG_20250404_1909112.jpg.de2438c709869161a5b6ed24d36a9422.jpg

No green Mercedes 500E, but a long last the gold Camaro was within grabbing distance.

A Bugcation trailer set with a tatty box proved too tempting to pass up, too.

So, a bit of an odd one today...

IMG_20250404_1912092.jpg.3f54395d88de960c3b70a0151fbb4688.jpg

....but once again, it keeps me on my toes...

Happy Friday, kids.
