a couple of 2CVs were in the car park and the Metalwork teacher Mr Hobbs had one eye and a penchent for Humber Sceptre's

Port Glasgow High School 1972-78

Mr Bryce (?) had a couple of Jensen Healey's, lucky git (or not)

Mrs Kerr had a blue Rover P5 coupe with cream leather seats.

Iain Barr (geography) had a Mini Clubman estate.

The Headmaster always had Chryslers in 180 and 2 litre flavours.

Mr Walker (science) had a brand new Allegro with rubber mats instead of carpets, this was the first new car I was ever in, and seemed impossibly posh compared to the ancient and knackered old shitters my dad rolled around in......

Brilliant thread! This was all 1990-1995...

Mr Kennedy - he had a purple Mini with a louvred back window, wheels as wide as they were tall, limo tints and a full plastic bodykit. We once were sent out to get some casettes from the car to play music in class (he was the token "cool" English teacher) and had a good old poke around at his very flashy stereo.

Teacher With Forgotten Name - Metro Advantage. The purple one with the white crossspokes. We once picked it up by the wheelarches and turned it 45 degrees so it was touching the cars next to it and couldn't be removed from the space. No reason, as I recall.....

Mr Donaldson - Red Rover SD1, immaculate condition apart from the fat git took up both front seats and used to spend all break, every break, smoking in it.

Mr Garton - Capri 280. WANTED, still WANT.

Mrs Rosser - Red Merc, not sure which one but it was approx. 12 times the length of any other car in the carpark. Ran a registration of "28R" or something, I assume she only worked to pass the time.

French Teacher - as in she was properly French, and also taught french. As expected, ran a hugely tatty AX which must have been a french special edition where it left the factory with mismatched panels, cracked windscreen, peeling rubber trim etc.

Our minibus was a pretty boring LDV/FreightRover/whatever they were called in 1990. At primary school however, we had a Facelifted Mk2 Transit where the back doors had the amusing habit of opening around corners. In the days before seatbelts. Nice! I remember washing that thing on numerous occasions, however since I was a good boy at school I presume I actually volunteered to do it.

Was it also LHD on Paris plates? :D

I don't think it was ever clean enough to see the plates!

I forgot primary school - Mr Walters the head teacher had a light metallic green mk2 Granada 2.8, which got traded in for a Lancia Thema (? The granada-sized saloon) and then the really hairy PE teacher whose name I forget had a yellow Nova SR - I remember the plastic grille being all warped and melted.

I can't remember many but

Primary school,

Mr Carling who taught what is now year 5 had a brand new Nissan Bluebird in black, Mr Dyke, an alternative type who lived accross the road and taught music part time had a beige bay window campervan on a V reg.

Secondry School,

Mr Thomas a young and nerdy biology teacher ran a white mk1 MR2

Mrs Phillips, a disgustingly obese maths teacher ran a Honda Civic

An RE teacher ran a fairly shite 1.6 Capri that seemed to drag its arse around the place

An art teacher ran a mid blue GT6

minibus was a red Merc 307 which was pulled onto the playground one day, polished and fitted with poundland hubcaps ready for sale. A smiley Transit replaced it.

Oooh - Mr Watson, a supply teacher. Had an orangey-yellow Opel Kadette estate (RHD, but Opel-badged regardless). Was horrible, had a blue door and was always filthy. Judging by the mattress in the back and clothes all over it, he also slept in it.

Mr Watson was replaced the day after a young lad made a rather serious and, as we later learned, completely factual allegation against him involving "after school classes". I imagine not being able to stay at schools long was one of the reasons he was sleeping in a shitty Vauxhall.

A few I remember; these would have been from 1981 to 90.

Headmaster in primary school had a Renault 16 followed by a new 'Y' plate Volvo 340. The sports bloke had a red 4dr Escort mark 2, he obviously looked after it, it was always immaculate. One of the younger, poorer (teachers weren't all that well paid back then) had a Reliant Rebel which was an ancient crock even in '82.

First proper school - geography teacher had a 1970 Rover 2000, design and technology bloke an ancient Maxi, chemistry bloke an Allegro (someone nicked the Austin badge off it!) , someone I didn't know an ancient Volvo Amazon estate, gym/history teacher a Midget and then a RWD Starlet, the head of maths had a Cortina Crusader estate. The only one who had new cars was the French teacher who got a A reg blue Sierra.

Significant parents cars were Rover P5, Morris Minor Traveller, Mercedes S class, Mini Moke/Mini Cooper (family had about 7 different Minis), Toyota Supra (86 on one).

As it was a public school here were two types of parent - wealthy (not silly rich but 'comfortable'), where the Dad had a company car (Rover SDI, Granada, Carlton, Volvo etc) and Mum a Metro, Fiesta, Renault 5 etc, or less well off where the parents spent their cash on the school fees and they drove old bangers. Then there would the odd family where the dad had something really flash but the poor old mum got to run around in a shitter - brand new Saab 900 Turbo and 1972 Mini Clubman was the best example of this!

At the last school, the only memorable ones were a geography teachers immaculate 72 Hillman Hunter, a biology teachers utterly shagged Pug 304 estate and the chemistry teachers Toyota Camry, non greatly interesting in itself but the reg was A666 LFO. Considering he was an evangelical Christian that was pretty ironic!

Now that teachers pay is comparatively much higher, its all Fiat 500s, MINIs, Audi A3s and BMW 1 Series.

I've remembered some of my far-off primary school days from the early 90s :) I went to a small village school with 2 classes and 4 staff so not much to see car-wise, but the teaching assistant had a Mk1 Fester. The old headmistress who retired not long after I started had a Mk4 Escrot estate and her replacement had one of those Mazda 323s with the pop-up headlights. She had an accident in it and was off work for a long time, but I guess it was repaired as I don't recall her having a different car when she came back. Her absence was covered by a supply teacher, Mr Prendergast, who had a rusty old Renner 4 that got laughed at. I have a vague memory of the only other teacher driving a Polo coupe that must have been pretty new, and the dinnerlady lived in the village and I'm not even sure she could drive.

Amazing what memories this site can drag up!

I can remember my primary school headteacher driving a (nearly new) Volvo 360 GLE - B550 UWR. Used to nickname it 'underwear' after it's number plate. Secretary had a C-reg Mk2 Fiesta in that lilac-purple colour, deputy head had a Rover 216 - D736 GAH. The substitute teachers had a pea-green Mini, think it was an old J or K reg, and one of them had a Nissan Cherry :D

Middle school, the only ones that stood out where a Fiat Uno - D123 SUR, a Lada Riva Saloon and a D-reg Metro owned by my form teacher which had replacement front wings in black undercoat - that was in 1993! My P.E. teacher had an XR3i Convertible.

High School, P.E teachers had a Pug 309 and a Porsche 924, Biology teacher had a Toyota Starlet! GEF 656V IIRC. Was immaculate and she'd brought it from where she lived in Middlesbrough down south when she moved. Geography teacher had a 2CV Dyane...

Our school minibus that was there when I attended is still with the school. They've had it 12 years now! It's a smiley-face Transit - N881 RAV.

Two female teachers, one art, one maths. Both had blue Rover Metros. The art teacher was hot (and on my paper round lol), the maths teacher not so......

Given that I've spent at least 40 years trying to forget my school life, it's amazing how some of these things keep coming back to me...

One of the teachers, who always walked to school, lived not far from me so it wasn't hard to cycle past his house. Where his driveway housed a green Minor woody and a CF, which I think was supposed to replace the Minor. I remember another teacher taking me home one time when I wasn't well (which was often) in her beige Mk2 Cortina. There was a quite senior lady who I think was still "Miss" rather than "Mrs," who drove a blue Singer Gazelle, about 1966. Someone had an early, rounded, Reliant Regal, and someone else had a purple Mini with red interior. I seem to remember at least two Arrows in Minx or Hunter flava, and I'm sure I remember one of the teachers having a Rover P4, too. One of the parents had a Mk4 Zodiac which was replaced by a Wolseley 6 landcrab, I think these were company cars. Oh and another parent had a blue Cortina Mk3 XL.

At Tech and Art College the teachers, now calling themselves lecturers, had a very entertaining selection. White Citroen GS, beige Opel Kadett estate (Trigger shape), brand new white Princess 1800; lush FD VX4/90 which was replaced by an old Beetle (I think he was getting divorced but one didn't like to ask, back then), MGB roadster, Volvo 145 (owned by an unmarried lady who was tiny!), Renault 4 van, 1967 Humber Imperial (which I nearly bought; would have been pretty brave at 18!), 1974 Fiat 124 estate which was replaced by a brand-new Renault 12 estate. Oh and the Art College principal had a LWB Land Rover which I think was a Carawagon.

And by the miracle of Street View, here it is, still....

Actually come to think of it, they bought it in 1996 so that's 16 years ago!! I remember the day it arrived, it was mentioned in assembly by a very smug deputy headteacher. It was written off in 1999 when Diss High School borrowed it and reshaped the whole of the driver's side into a brick wall. It's predecessor was a Freight Rover minbus, a petrol one too! E705 GPV I think. Was absolutely shot to shit when it was disposed of, sadly.

Primary School - The Head Teacher Miss Mackie ( Smackie ) had a bog standard Powder Blue MK 1 Golf Diesel.

Middle School - The Head Teacher had a Mazda 929 Estate in Lime green, defaced with shaving foam etc every year the top form moved to secondary school.

Secondary School - Head Teacher had a Rover 216 Sli, Deputy Head had a very ratty looking MGB, with rusty wire wheels, Pe teacher had a really crap Capri 1.6 in red. However the school was redeemed by a science teacher who had a MK2 Astra GTE in white, with white alloys, and the CDT Teacher with a Toyota MR2 Mk1, he was 6ft 4 I seem to remember and was amusing seeing him contort himself into that.

Another science teacher had a facelift Renner 19 hatch in green, a French Teacher Madame Coze ( Had a plastic arm ) with a MK1 Renner Espace in a vile shade of bright green.

First School (82-86):

Mrs. Ellison Has a red Toyota Cressida (WIN) and later on a BROWN Volvo 343/340.

My uber strict teacher Mrs. Collinson had a green Hillman Imp. By the time I went to middle school i used to see her drive past in a burgandy mark 2 Fiesta Popular (Plus?).

Middle School (86-90):

Ex-miliary Head teacher Mr Read had a few Volvo Estates, I forget which ones exactly but IIC 200 series and later on a 700 series. A later 340 series appeared a few times - assumed it was the wife's.

Miss Tyrer had a red D reg Toyota Corolla which looked nice (bug shape with the high up rear number plate). I think it might have been traded in for a newer model. At least she had a good eye for a reliable car.

The old boiler Mrs Goldsmith had an E reg Austin Maestro L. There was always something about her that was a bit odd but being young I couldn't figure it out. (Years later I read in the local paper that her husband was charged and convicted of a few crimes against minors when he was a scout leader, the dirty kunt. Both kunts that derverve each other - how DARE they drive a Maestro! )

Deputy Head Mr. D'Arts (poncey name!) had an Austin Montego, C reg i think.

Mr Sheldon, my teacher in the 3rd year and his specialty being art, drove a Citroen Visa. Quite apt, really. :D

Mrs. Hawes I think had a Maestro too.

Secondary School (90-96)

Head Teacher Miss Norman had an anaemic white C reg Reno 18 GTS, that was replaced by a facelifted Reno 19 Prima. Despite her high salary, she didn't like splashing out on cars.

When I came up to this school for some reason there were 3 Deputy Heads. Bit of a Top Heavy management structure I always thought. :?

Deputy Head Mr. Franklin had a Rover 216 Vanden Plas iirc. He retired in '91 I think and died shortly after. Happy retirement!

Another DH, Mr. Spoors had an early Aero look Granada 2.8i. Think it might have been a Ghia or even a Scorpio. He later downtraded to a Sierra 1.8 LX.

The other DH, Mr. Burvill had a Ford Escort Eclipse in metallic blue. Lucky b*****d retired at the same time I left the sixth form at the tender age of 50on his public sector pension...although upon reflection I think he had a few demons to battle.

My form tutor Mr. Keogh (also PE and History) drove a mark 2 Cavalier L hatch, reg BKK 981Y. It was in that popular early 80s Vauxhall hue of terra cotta! :D He gave me lift home once it it after I headbutted one of the school year's bullies after giving me some hassle in a PE lesson sir was in charge of. He suspended both of us from PE for a few weeks (didn't bother me or him in the slightest so not much of a punishment). Told him that I think twat bully might be waiting outside the PE block with his sidekicks to duff me up so he took me home, much to my relief. A few years later I was cleaning my D reg Escort outside my house (I lived very close to the school) and he walked past en route to the shops and we chatted. He commented that at my young age and as a student with just a part time job, I now had a newer car than he did (in a joking way) :D . Yep, he still had the Cavalier by the late 1990s so it must have been a bloody good car providing sterling service. 8)

1st Geography teacher Mr Pollock (didn't take kindly to variations on his surname but a great teacher :) ) had a white mark 4 or 5 Cortina estate. He left that school and his successor was a very young Mr. Gee, fresh out of Teacher Training, who had a red E reg Renault 5 Campus. Later replaced with a K reg Clio RT. So he liked his small Renaults. Someone had to, I guess! :D

Another Geography teacher Mrs. Carr (!) had an X reg red Citroen 2CV which did look rather tired. Geography Teachers and Citroen 2CVs, eh? She would later teach me A Level Geography alongside Mr Gee. Think the 2CV was traded in for something less interesting by then.

Maths teacher Mr. Evans had one of the latest early 80s Austin Maxis with placcy wheel trims. That was later replaced with an Austin Montego.

One of the Science Teachers Mr. Davis (nicknamed Kenny Everitt) was something of a legend in that he drove a red Skoda Estelle (X reg Ithink). 8)8)8) Obviously a Skoda fan as it was replaced with a less interesting Favorit.

My Science Teacher Mr. McLachlin had a black F reg Citroen BX GTi. True autoshite legend!

At primary, notable shiters were,

Headmaster Mr Marr had a white Lancia Beta Berlina, lovely! This was replaced with a Miami blue Mk4 Cortina 2.0 Ghia. Still nice.

Mrs Gillette had a mk1 VW Polo, which despite being not very old, had a fair amount of rust spots on it. This was replaced by one of the very first breadvan Polos.

An old dear used to come in and play the piano during choir practice. She had a winning Vanden Plas 1500.the reg was NDC 999P which was also nice.

On to comprehensive school,

Most interesting was Miss Tonks's (History) Alfasud Ti. This was replaced with a Lancia Y10, the only one I've ever seen round here.

Mr Rafferty (Maths) had a terracotta coloured Citroen GS. This was replaced by a green GSA X1.

Mr Brown (Maths) had an early Skoda Estelle. Replaced by a silver Talbot Alpine.

Mr Williams (French) had a very tidy early Chevette hatch, with reg no TRG 1S. He said the plate was worth a lot more than the car!

Mrs Jackaman (French) could be seen either driving an early Metro HLE, or an N reg Mini, in light Blue with hand painted Union Jack roof. Much LOLing at that one by some of the pupils...

Mr Hartness (Head of year) was a dapper kind of guy, so his early Alfetta GTV suited him well.

Mr Dickinson (I.T) had a very shonky Mk1 Escort 2 door. Funny thing is we all used to LOL at that car and take the piss. Nowadays it'd be 'OMGSIRYOU NEEDTOGETTHATTWODOORONEBAYNOTMEXICORS2000GROUP4GETSOMEBENTAVOVINTAGSONANDMAKEAMINT' etc... Eventually replaced with a Rover 213SE. At the time it was a shrewd choice...

Mr Tait (Deputy Head) was a winnah with his T reg Audi 100 Avant 5E.

And a regular funny sight was Mr Wimsey (Head) getting into his Mini City E, all 6ft 4 of him!

But for me the all ttime school Autoshite champion was Mr Cunningham (Geography) with his Russet brown Princess 2 HLS!

Primary school

Headmaster had a Rover P6 reg GUS 500N, reg last recorded on a Granada Ghia

Mrs Marsden (later Mrs Wright) had a yellow mark 4 Cortina 2.0S, a wedding present fro her second husband

Mr Sheppard (tosser) had several Renner 4s

Mrs Hawkins (who was ancient) had a Pugrot like Columbos

Grammar school

Both the principal and vice principal had identical, sequentially numbered Rover 213S's in a colour that looked a lot like moonraker blue.

Mr Bell, maths teacher who talked like Gazza loved his Capris - gold mark 3 1.6GL, silver mark 3 2.0 Laser and finally, a 280 runout. He sold the Laser to...

...Mr Duncan, who eloped with the very tasty Spanish assistant, Graciela. Never seen again!

Mr Patterson, my German teacher had a MG Maestro 1600 in pale blue (zircon?) reg GXI 858. Chopped in for a Renner 9 TXE Electronic.

Mr "Jai" Wilkinson Physics teacher and cool dude - Jetta GT. Years later I eneded up working for him in the Educational Computer Unit of our local Education Board. Never could get used NOT to calling him "Sir".

Mr "Fat Rab" Wilkinson. Breadvan Polo GL. Went on fire all by irself in the school car park. Fat Rab was a brilliant teacher.

Mr McNally - MINT very early Scirocco. Poor man died in the staff room.

Mr Crawford, maths and computer science. Splitty, and a tidy one at that. He had 7 kids.

Mrs Caldwell, English and French. Mark 2 Golf GTi more door, mark 2 XR2, Rover 216 Vitesse, MG Maestro turbo.

Miss Stewart, English - Yamaha RD350LC!

Mr "Alfie" Lockhart, woodwork and metalwork - Lotus Esprit Turbo, which was a present from his son who made a packet on the stock market in the Thatcher years

Best one: Harry McClure, caretaker. LHD BMW M3.

At junior school, the head, a batchelor in ths 50s who lived with his mum had a series 1 rover sd1 in light metallic blue that looked as though someone had been cleaning it with a brillo pad. This was later replaced with a G plate rover 820 fastback in a sort of light beige colour. Only other noteworthy car was a rusty mk 1 capri in gold that had furry seat and steering wheel covers and saggy rear springs driven by mrs nightingale. A few kids later and it was replaced by a rusty pug 504 estate, probably still doing service in africa somewhere as I write.

At senior school the head has a brand new volvo 940 saloon j reg. A home economics teacher had a mint escort mk 1 reg XTC7N- in a bright orange that was lovely! later the car was replaced by a polo breadvan bearing the same reg. My eccentric English teacher smoked around in one of the first Maestros, on a y plate, only years old 6 or so but it had evidently had a hard life and I remember getting a 'credit' because I helped him with a bump start. There were about 3 or 4 mkII fiesta XR2s, which, with the city centre location, all had damaged locks from (pupils?) having a try at getting in. Other memory is of having to run around a partially burnt out mg metro that had been dumped on the running track! Oh, the minibuses were an LDV 200 and and LDV 400, both of whish were cained around mercilessly on field trips etc. Both were fairly unreliable and quite rusty at 5 years old or so. My fave was a y reg metallic red austin ambassador vp that a latin teacher had.

1970s Ardnamurchan-Strontian- cant remember what the teachers had...but an Edinburgh family the Fiddes bought the Ben View Hotel...and the father had previously owned a garage..so the daily drop off was an Aston Martin DB6 on rusty wires and front end was rebuilt from a Ford Anglia and full of bog!...when we lived at the Ben View prior..the then owner had a BOSS 302 Mustang RHD..so we got picked up in that occasionally...and we re talking flat out on single track roads!
