Went into my local breakers today (Deatons in Staveley)...........and there, beeing drained of fluids was an 04 plate Megane. Tidy and straight, no obvious damage.

To me, that's still a new car.

09 Mondeo (seen in 2010). Smacked hard up the arrse by a Merc town service bus. The scrappy bought it from the insurance company (who were happy to get shot of it quick).

Last summer the same breaker had a top spec Grand Scenic, undamaged but scrapped due to unfathomable elcetronic gremlins which the main dealer couldn't figure out. The scrappy hopes to be able to fix it by replacing the engine and associated gubbins from another Renner at some stage. It's a really nice car.

Also last summer, 2005 MGZR 160. Rolled. :( , 2006 407HDi with OMG exploding gearbox and front end impact damage.

You need to go to Furber's salvage and scapyards near Whitchurch. Six month old Rollers, three week old other cars and they once had a Tessterossa in that couldn't have been more than a few months old.

There was a 53 plate Citroen C5 estate in Kirby's the other day. All the ancilleries had been removed and the engine was in pieces...

Crash damaged cars shouldn't count.

I saw a 2004/5 facelift Rover 75 in a metal salvage yard a couple of years ago, didn't check what engine it had.

2005 neon, with a furbarred autobox

I agree. I am interested to see what cars are so expensive to repair that the costs outweighs the still pretty sizeable price. How much is an 04 plate Megane worth? £2.5k?

Posted
Less than half that for a high spec diesel with average miles.

Really? Blimey. I got £2,300 from the insurance company for my 51 plate povo spec Xsara when I crashed it a year and a half ago so was basing the value roughly on that. Dont really pay much attention to modern car prices but that seems well cheap, maybe as an 04 plate still seems so modern to me. Makes it a bit more realistic to be in the scrappie due to a big fuck up of some sort. Would still not be happy if it was mine even at that price though.

There was an 04 plate Cityrover on top of a pile of cars at Daltons in Edinburgh, didn't look accident damaged. That was last year too.

2007.... summer of the floods. 4 unregistered Corsas with less than delivery mileage on. Were on the top deck of the transporter. Cue low bridge and new driver. (Been in the job a day) All opened up like sardine tins.

That happened at Woodsides yard (http://www.woodsides.com/) a few years ago. 4 brand new Fiestas swept off the top deck. I know the owner and he told me of the 4 very distinct thuds!

I saw an 1991 H-reg Rover 825SD Fastback in Trice's yard in Sandwich in 1996. It was a former taxi which had seen very hard use and had suffered terminal engine failure. It was given up on because its owner couldn't be bothered with the hassle of getting a new engine fitted to it.

Posted

On other threads, someone mentioned a 56 reg Twingo in a yard, also someone mentioned a mate 'weighing in' a 06 Laguna.

I've seen a '55' reg Peugeot 407 being broken up, no damage just engine fubarred.

Flood damage and police mandated 'must not go back on road' (usually ringers or cars involved in major crimes) accounts for some of the damage free newish cars you see in salvage yards.

Saw an N reg (95-96) Cavalier diesel abandoned at Swansea West services back in 2003. At the time it was the newest dumped car I had ever seen. It was a former minicab, no doubt about it. Also saw a '97 Mondeo diesel at Bridges in Pease Pottage when it would have been about 7-8 years old. It had (or indicated) 720K on the clock

When I worked at Heathrow we used clear the dumped cars from the airport carparks (before scrap was worth anything) and in most cases take them to the fire service training ground where they were destroyed in training exercises. The newest one I can remember was a Mazda 121 that was a Dutch hire car and was less than three years old. Some cars went for auction but as this one was LHD and would have needed to be officially imported first so I think they just thought sod it.

Iv'e seen a Kia Schuma in oue local yard that must have been about 5 or 6 years old. I think it was binned just because it was a bit tatty!

The newest car I've seen abandoned on the roadside was this Vectra, which I spotted in a lay-by just outside Roosendaal in the Netherlands in October last year. I'm guessing that the engine or transmission had gone on it, as it was in fairly good condition:

That Mondeo must have been driven 24-7-365 to accrue that sort of mileage. What condition was it in?

If we are including damaged cars I will just leave this here from the copart site

Yes thats right its a 2011 car with 100 miles on the odo.

I'm 90% certain that's the same hire Corsa that ended up submerged in the sea somehow, I remember reading about it. It fell off a ferry, or the driver was pissed up, or something like that...can't just remember.

And the common theme is - it's all modern French junk.

It's not a Corsa, it's a Hyundai or Kia I think.

Thats a hyundai ^

I didn't see these cars but i did see the pictures, around this time in 1991 i started in h.m. stevenson the local lancia dealer and in the mechanics canteen(shite hole) there were pictures of rows of rotten beta berlina's, a fair amount of coupe's and hpe's a ,couple of spiders , a monte carlo and a gamma berlina. The pic's were taken about 10 years previous.

The story was that they were brand new unregisterd cars in ireland and were all offered cheaply as a job lot to stevensons,so hugh the owner and another guy flew over, every one was fucked, not one was worth bringing back,i believe they were stripped and scrapped.

There were still some 'enhanced trade in' beta's round the back of the garage when i started and i have also read the stories about the 'enhanced trade in ' beta's being scrapped at crewkerne sp* at under 3 years old.

Still love beta berlina's though !

Didn't Lancia have a problem a while back where they had to buy back and crush brand new cars due to corrosion issues?

Posted

Not quite, they offered advantagous trade in prices to get owners out of them,as owners were deserate to get out of them after the inaccurate reporting by the daily mail and the thats life program of the rust issues, after that they were about attracive to the trade then as a 21st century renault is now.

Alright from a distance but pretty grubby up close!

Spotted this damaged '05-plate MGZR in my yard today...

Also in the yard is a '55-plate Vectra, ex-Minicab with terminal engine failure.

While on about Lancia have the news story from back in the day....

Ironically, the first time I ever met an Avantime in the flesh was.... in a scrap yard.

Popped in to a Renault breakers in Walsall in 2009 to get a few bits for the Vel Satis. At the back was this.
