OOoOh, a TorstenLanda [sic]Nice nicety nice, and with a manual box too, super. That one I had a while back was fugging awesome for tat-shifting, A-framed grot like it wasn't there and the most gigantic boot evAr (GR8 4 DOGGIN).I really liked it, but Mrs PW found it 'offensive'. Daft bint.

Splendid purchase MrB, looks a lovely example and just about run-in

Torslanda too. Best of a good bunch. One of these days the 240 will head towards Amazon status. I've got a tow bar - I nabbed it off a saloon which has slightly mounting points - but I managed to get it fitted onto my old wagon - I think I had to drill extra holes to the underside of the car - but it was fine with a trailer + car, so it should be ok. Its currently in South Oxfordshire, carrier pigeon/telex me if you want to go and get it or alternatively I can bring it up to spuggyland when I pop down in a few weeks. I think I might have one headlamp protector too. That will be free to you sir.Who bought the Aldi? Is its future assured?

The Man with The Big Hair, wizzn't it?

There's one of these Torslanda 240 estates that parks in the car park at work, also K reg but in white. Is Torslanda the monika for 'Top-Of-The-Range'? Also mystified by the 'Lambda Sond' (I think) badges they have on the front grille? :?

Nice purchase! My dad used to have a gold f-reg GL estate - indestructible!Lambda Sond refers to the fact that its fitted with a CAT. 'Lambda' is what the Oxygen sensor and associated cumputer skullduggery must achieve, ie, the correct level of exhaust emissions. Havent a clue what 'sond stands for though!

Torslanda is where they're made, it's a run-out model.

Affirmative, it was bought by a hairy lad off R-R, who conducted an exemplary purchase, no messing. He was not at all fazed by the large number of electrical gremlins which beset the Audi, i think he will give it the TLC it needs, and which i summarily failed to deliver.

I think "sond" just means "probe" or "sensor".Nice purchase Mr. B. I learned to drive in a 240 estate. Not the quickest or most economical of vehicles, but they go on forever. K plate must be one of the last - I saw one on an L the other day, but that was the only one I'd ever seen that late.

The Volvo looks like a great buy, similar mileage to my Camry but I suspect yours will last longer even if it’s a bit thirstier. Criminally cheap, £410 can’t be vastly more than its weigh-in value when you factor its tax and MoT into the equation?Interior looks tidy. Amused by the 6k redline, my impression of these engines as a bystander is that they’re certainly not a revver. Perhaps it’s just that fan noise dominating everything?I see it’s in Lincoln, will we get to see it at the do this weekend?

I had my dad's up to 6,500rpm a couple of times as a newly-qualified 17-year-old. They do rev surprisingly well for such an old design.

They make a great throaty noise too, kind of like a turbine - something to do with a fixed (rather than viscous or electric) radiator fan I believe. GR8 4 BIG MILEAGES AND NOT BENDING VALVES IF THE CAMBELT SNAPS (if it's not the injected 2.3, anyway).Awesome purchase, get some Waxoyl into the tailgate and the panel below it (where the bumper mounts) STAT, then sit back and ride out any crisis. Fuel economy is the only concern, I do love the seat comfort and total feeling of invicibility imparted by big "trad" Volvos. Good price too!

STAT?wassat mean then..obviously not down with the kids.

Like Wuvz, I too learned to drive in a nice brown W-reg 245 wagon with 4-speed box and full length roofrack. GR8 4 CRUZIN - PAINTERZ N DECOR8RZ STYLZI'm hoping, by dint of this one's 2.0 injected engine and by adpoting Hirst-like driving techniques, I might just crack the magic 30 with this old tank.

I bet old Volvos drive lovely "Hirst-style", can't really imagine what it's like thrashing the guts out of one.

You can get a Volvo 240 wagon in Gran Turismo 4 on the PS2 8) Tune it up and get that bad boy driftin :D I hope that GT5 will have loads of retro tat in again, it's much easier and cheaper to collect virtual cars than real ones!

Hirst-technique is deffo where it's at with these things. Certainly my 240 and my dad's 760 Turdblowa were both very adept at the casual waft (but then both were douglasbadermatics). And I agree with L.Werfare that the sound they make is very nice indeed. Deffo "top five tickover sounds" material, along with the BMW straight six, and V8 Range Rovers. YUM!

It is the kind of induction roar that makes you think the engine will suck in roadside objects and small children, if they are too close to the intake  Do the manual ones of these 240s have the quality 4+overdrive gearbox? Great, clunky shift quality. I can see the estate 240s and 740s being with us for a long time yet, but I bet a lot of marginal saloons are getting weighed in at the moment

Posted

My dad's one was a 4+OD. Clunktastic. I spent some time trying to persuade him to rewire the overdrive so that it worked on all forward gears, to get over the hopelessly wide gaps between ratios. He wouldn't be convinced though :( . True what you say about the induction roar. My dad's had aircon, and when that was switched on it made the roar even louder and more growly - it almost sounded like a straight 6.

I think a set of leather seats from a 240/740 would make a cracking three-piece suite. Mrs W does not agree. Women, eh?OD operation is much smoother if you engage the clutch first, I found. Presumably 240s also have the benefit of speedometers and fuel gauges that actually work 100% of the time? 740s are a heavy car to push to a petrol station...

Posted

My old man has a 960 with the clunktastic 4 speed OD box. Definately wise to use the clutch. That old thing sounds horrendous as it knocks very loudly like one of the big ends is hanging out but it's been like that for well over 50,000 miles now. It's also covered that 50k with a cylinder head that I repaired with a load of liquid metal and refaced with a file  Good tools Volvos.

Superb buy Mr B! My mate runs a small garage which specialises in 'elderly' Volvos - being a former hot-rodder he has a pathological hatred of FWD - so breaks many a old Volvo - generally they are still running and often have MOTs, but are worth bugger all unless they are 7/9 series estates.740/940s are galvanised so tend to last longer than 240s - which are now rare in (dampish) West Wales. There are a couple of local Torslandas though - one on an L.Most of the 'marginal' 740/940 saloons Mr Welfare dicusses have already been scrapped - often worth more weighed in, than as a going concern if they have short MOTs. The market for new 940 saloons died out after about 1992 anyway - L reg onwards saloons are very rare, although the 960 was very nicely kitted out.

Does this have a bright red engine block? a 1982 example came in for an engine swap while I was doing work experience at a garage in 1992 (more "chucking stuff at folk who were trying to do their work and dropping bits of tackle into the waste oil drum experience, really) and I remember both the one that came out and the one that went in were finished in a sort of `80s Transit Vermillon, and thats something I`ve never seen outside of a musclecar magazine feature since.

Posted

In the 80s we had a green R reg 244 saloon, a dark blue S reg 245 estate & a brown V reg 245 estate at various times. At least 2 of them were had at one time. I don't remember any of them sounding beefy, but then I was about 5 or 6 at the time.
