Black_GT Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 MK 6 Escorts , theres still a load around here but none ive seen have any rear arches left to speak of and most have patchwork quilt sills . I can see them disappearing within a few yearsNo great loss though as they are fugly horrible things +1, there's few cars as new as the Mk6 Escort that seem to have such a problem with the rear arches - bad steel or bad design? Mk1 Clios also seem to be getting rapidly rarer. Skoda Felicias aren't especially rare yet, but the condition of the majority I see suggests that they may be soon!
Formula Autos Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 This generation of Passat saloon seems to be extinct in my neck of the woods (West Cumbria), yet there seems to be loads of estates left. Boggo Novas all seem to have disappeared from round here too. I haven't seen anything other than Barryed 3 doors for a few years now All the Isuzu Troopers round here seem to have gone recently. Banged in under scrappage, and replaced with Qashqais, perhaps?
r.welfare Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 Same principle you've seen with the Passats as you get with 405s and other similar-aged motors - saloons aren't as practical so less popular and die out more quickly, the estates retain a following. See also pre-2000 Subaru Legacy.
Cavcraft Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 I think the theory of dizzlers lasting longer than petrols is bang on. Having driven various Passats (as an example) the only possible thing going for them is the fuel economy of the diesels. I can't possibly imagine the appeal of a petrol engined one to be honest. This applies to my daily hack (80TDi) too by the way. There's nadge all of any even remote interest to say about it apart from the fuel it sips and the fact it'll run on veg oil.

VR6 Pisshats are a giggle. Diesel ones are mindbogglingly dull.
Cavcraft Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 ALL Passats are dull mate. Incredibly so as it 'appens!
Justin Case Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 Funnily enough we were discussing this with friends only last week. They used to have a 90s Mazda 626, but none of us has seen one for ages. They were quite reliable, rustproof and reasonably economical so what has happened, or are they so anonymous that they are really around in droves but no-one has actually noticed *This may have happened to other Japanese and Korean cars

Guest Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 Volvo 400s seem to be disappearing fast around here; most of the ones I still see regularly are looking very unkempt indeed. That's because they're going through an interim period of being utterly worthless, rusting away because the scarcity of key spares, and being ripped apart for their running gear if they happen to be packing Turbo engines. In ten years or so the 480 will have a minor following as an 80's classic. At the moment a set of rear light clusters cost more than a sound ES, and condemn many to the scrap pile because water gets in and wreaks havoc. I reckon a disproportionate number of Celebrations will survive as most were bought by collectors. A few 480 Turbos will escape the 5GT harvesting programmes, but their 440 \ 460 brethren will be more or less wiped off the face of the earth - they just aren't distinctive enough and their running gear too accessible for those in the know. In fact even now I've never seen a 440 \ 460 Turbo outside of a Volvo Owner's Club show. 480s still seem fairly plentiful - I see a couple regularly in my area. That said, many - if the cretins on the VOC board are anything to go by - are run by penny pinching skinflints who seemingly want to 'preserve' their cars without spending much on them into the bargain. The Information Centres and electronics are also a sticking point for the 400 Series cars. Throw in a middling resistance to rust and a low book value, it's not really surprising you don't see many any more.

Pete-M Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 Yes, whilst rolling a massive phattyboombatty taking pictures of the car behind you. On the M6. Whilst going to the NEC Classic. Surely that should be in the "Putting the fun back into motoring" thread? (Headlining now 'fixed')
R9UKE Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 Ah the Volvo 440. I had never looked twice at them until I bought this one by accident at auction. One owner from new (deceased), 57000 miles and an interior that still smelt like the Volvo factory. Nice 2.0 engine, it went like shit off a shovel. Not kidding when I say that it's one of the most impressive cars I've ever owned. Should never have sold it but there was a nice wee profit in it to get me off the bones of my arse at the time.

I know of a very cheap Turbo 440 at the bottom of the country which keeps tempting me with its hurdy gurdy shonkiness. You are not helping me overcome this. Neither is WTC telling me he can help with another problem I have. NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
barefoot Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 Remember when the VW Corrado came out, they were all yellow. Now you don't see Corrado's in any colour.& Nissan Sunny's.

John F Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 The ubiquitous Citroen Xsara bastard carrier will disappear almost overnight at some stage, and good riddance to the nasty, detestable, hideous, bloated crock o' shit. cros 1
Tartan58 Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 When was the last time you saw a Renault with a number? Or even a Mk1 Clio.I never thought I'd regret selling my R19 saloon but I doubt I've seen 10 in the 5 years since - that's enough to make me want it back.
R9UKE Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 There are two old women I see at least once a week pottering around. One in a faded Turqoise Renault 5 Prima, and the other in a mint looking Maroon Renault 19. It's an RT model and I've seen her open it with the still working remote locking. Want!!! On the other hand I honestly couldn't tell you the last time I saw a 21. It's got to be at least 5 years ago. Saw a 25 just before Christmas, never seen it again. As for 9s and 11s, used to have a few neighbours with them but they got killed in the scrappage scheme.

Even Saxos seem to be becoming scarcer - probably due to the fact that most have been destroyed by having to cart around three tons of exhaust pipe everywhere they go with the vibrations from the din they make causing them to self destruct. In fact, around here at least, 90s civics seem to be appearing out of the woodwork as the boy racers car of choice they seem to be everywhere.
Negative Creep Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 E36 coupe is the wanker chariot of choice round these parts. Normally matt black and trying to get the 1.8 engine OMG RWD DRIFT thing going on every corner
AnthonyG Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 Escorts have already virtually disapeared in West Wales, not the most affluent area. Of course, since I said that a week ago I've seen about 20. So there's life in the old dog(s) yet . Also there are quite a few R8 Rovers still kicking about, impressive given the newest is 15/16 years old.

overheadvalve Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 Fiat Bravo/Brava/Marea are probably on borrowed time.Happy to report that early Ford Ka models seem to be disappearing at a good rate too.The ubiquitous Citroen Xsara bastard carrier will disappear almost overnight at some stage, and good riddance to the nasty, detestable, hideous, bloated crock o' shit.Feckin hell catsinthewelder, Cavette and John F.... Anything Diahatsu, as they have stopped importing them.
mnde Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 Now I'm a Renault driver, I find I'm spotting Renners more. Plenty of Mk1 and 2 Clios round my way... but the earliest Mk1s seem thin on the ground (i.e. pre facelift with the flat rear light clusters). Got a soft spot for these... Most Lagunas I see seem to be 51 plate... I'm seeing Mk1 Meganes and Scenics every day at the moment - I was followed by an R plate Scenic this morning, and saw another T plate one. What really seems to have disappered is the Polo Mk2/3 breadvan/coupe... Mark.
Cavcraft Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 Agreed. I think if you drive/like a certain type of car you seem to notice other examples more as you're out and about.
AnthonyG Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 Funny how Saxos are dying out yet Pug 106s seem to just go on and on.. must be the owners I guess. Still a few of the very first round here, although all look fairly knackered. I don't see 205 diesels on a daily basis any more though, the tipping point must have been tipped!
25v6turbo Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 Well as a Renault owner and working for them i find myself always looking out for RenaultsI saw 2 phase 1 19 TXEs today plus about 3 phase 1 cliosThe Renault list of cars vanishing fast includeSafranes(yes i know i,am a lover of them!)but phase 1s are near extinct,i see a few phase 2s(W reg yesterday)21s19s although i see a few around herePhase 1 espace, phase 2(H reg on)seem to be around here againTheres a few 25s aswell, several 5s aswell, maybe Surrey is the main Renault area, there used to be loads of Renault garages around here,i,ve worked for 5 of them and they have all closed down.....
RoadworkUK Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 I don't remember seeing a non-Picasso Xsara for ages.
