Shite or not? '97 728i £800

We bought this for a work outing to Munich that now isn't happening and I need to be out of it quickly so I'm chucking it up on here and Retro - it's not really that shite but the paint on the bonnet has gone dull, plus you can pretend to be a crap drug dealer while you drive it around. It's in perfect working order, all the buttons and knobs work, the aircon is ice cold and the heating is hot, it's had 4 new tyres and a new rad recently and we've just done a full service on it.

The only 2 bad points are a bit of a wheel wobble at 40ish which is probably some crap balancing and the aforementioned dull paint on the bonnet. It's a huge amount of car for the money.

£800

It's tested until 29/10 and taxed until 30/11. I'm driving it everyday at the moment and it's a pleasure behind the wheel, plus the stereo is awesome. We can re-test it for £50 should you desire and even better than that you can pay on credit card for it if you want :)

These are a lovely old tank, and they're not bad on fuel - easy 30 mpg on a run.

That's the sort of fun I'm desperate to avoid :D

I've used a complicated process to value it - I paid 800 quid for it and made it better by replacing the crap number plates with new BMW dealer ones, so 800 quid seemed fair to me :)

Posted

Plus, OMG I forgot, it's got a PERSONAL NUMBER PLATE worth over £800 to someone called P777HUD. I'm not even lying, that's a personal plate. I despair.

Posted

No surprises on the council number plate.

But it's got M Parallel rimz (18's ?) and the mileage isn't sore. That's well worth 800 quid. I'll ask about.

Posted

Indeed the rimzors are 18s. They need lacquer but all Zimmer wheels do after about 6 months. It's an entirely presentable machine :)

Posted

Worth £800 all day long. Good luck with the sale.

Darn, if only I had £800 to play with, I dont think I've evn got £8 to spare :?

I wouldnt have minded one of these 7-series, I quite like them, and I'm not a fan of BMWs either.

BARGAIN, surely wortha punt on pisstonheads with it's fancy poshness. Could save the horror of the bay if no one on here or Rr has it.

Posted

Nice bargain barge. 8) Still looks like a modern car. :)

The 7s are the only BMWs I can get excited about.

A mate had one of these a couple of years back and I was actually quite pleasantly surprised by it - having been distinctly underwhelmed when I drove RRer Bstardchild's 740i I was expecting the 728 to be an underpowered barge, but they're really quite adequately fast for most situations, and my mate's one seemed to handle a lot better than the 740 too. That's a nice-looking car, has to be well worth eight hundred quid.

Genuinely brilliant old bus, and the parallel spoke 18"s are bound to attract some WOWage on RR, whenever I mention my fathers' 540iS people always as if it's "GOT THE EIGHTEENZ ON IT LIKE?". It hasn't. As a result it goes over bumps without loosening your vertebrae.

The ride was always better on the E38 anyway, and this one, if you squint a bit, looks like the 7 they used in The World Is Not Enough.

IS THAT THE 1 WIV PIERS BROZNAN?

VATS THE WUN M8, PREIS BRONZAN.

Talking about Pierce Brosnan, I watched 'The Long Good Friday' yesterday with him as a 26 year old IRA hitman.

Bangingly good film (from 1979) - Bob 'Oskins, Helen Mirren (who I've never even remotely fancied), the bloke who played Charlie in Casualty plus a range of shite cars - Series 11 XJ's, Rolls Shaddah 11 which gets blown up, Pagoda Merc, Princesses and a banger race at the end with various Oxbridges getting buggered royally.

At the beginning - an E3 BMW 2500 saloon in..................beige. 8)

I can't get over how this thing dispatches speed bumps. It's amazing what you can do with shocks and springs if you try :)

Scary that these have become so affordable. I hate myself for it, but I've always liked this shape of 7-Series, especially with the white lenses and the 'right' wheels, which makes me sound like just the sort of idiot I hate. I love the way that Chris Bangle must have looked at this in the same way that George W Bush looked at Iraq after his dad's war there and thought "I CAN DO BETTR SHOCK N ORE!"

I can understand people not liking BMWs, but as a shape there's precious little to dislike with the E38. It's just a very well proportioned, well balanced car outline. Same kind of crisp, defined resolution of line that the Mk 2 Granada and Peugeot 604 had.

Or perhaps I should stop eating this Battenberg that's making me type daft things.

Cake can be dangerous, but your point is most valid. The E38 has a grace that's absolutely lacking in the nose of the E39 5-Series.

I prefer a Victoria sponge though.

A grace and vision of purpose that's lacking in all modern BeeMz IMO.

-crusty top FTW.

I have always likes this shape too. There is nothing exciting about the lines or any of the features but when it is all put together it just seems to work really well.

Its the exact opposite of the later E65 which was a muddle of lines and lights. Not good. It is a bargain. I would love to smoke around in that.

I had a 750i on an M plate (early one) about 10 years ago and it just drrrrrrank fuel. It really was on another level and I soon got pissed off with 16 mpg. On the other hand, the 740i was almost as quick and would easily do 22-23. The V12 is a big lazy thing and they never felt that quick - the 4.4 V8 feels a lot meatier through the gears.

The 728i is the one to have. They're nice and torquey, and go remarkably well thanks to ideal gearing and a superb auto box.

Hey Mike, nooooooooooooooooooooo, you wouldn't want a manual in a 7 series. I'm still in Sheffield, you're welcome to come and look anytime :)

I was pleasantly surprised by how much go it has - more so than 2.8 E classes I've driven and they are a fair bit lighter.

Looks like a very nice example and very well priced as well, I doubt you will have any issues selling it.

Speaking of PEERZ BROZNAN, my favourite film with him in it is his 1988 film The Deceivers - all about the Thugs and their harmless nocturnal religious activities in 19thC India - based on the excellent John Masters book of the same. BROZNAN plays the lead roles descent into debauchery with aplomb and seedieness and THEREZ TITZ N ALL :D

Best PIERCED BRONZE NAN film was undoubtably The Fourth Protocol from 1986, including F1-11s, police Grannies and SD1s (inc handbrake turn), XR3i vs Transit, Class 312 EMU, BMW R800, and footage of Ipswich and the Orwell bridge before Cliff Quay power station was demolished.

And it had Michael Caine in it.

And tits.
