Never Go Out Without Your Camera

I know I could have just called it "More Cyprus Spots" or some such, but that would have invited questions about why I didn't add them into one of the previous threads on the subject. And the answer is, I can't be bothered trawling back however-many pages it would take to find one! So here you get a selection of recent spots from the Paphos area.

I went to the airport one day a couple of weeks ago, to drop off a CV in the hope of landing (geddit? ) a job, but it's not looking hopeful. However on the way back I spotted this at a taverna:

100_2069-vi.jpg

I think it was a 1975 car. Nice condition, anyway.

100_2082-vi.jpg

Again, quite by chance. I just turned down this side road, and flashing its surgically-altered bum at me was a Hillman Avenger rally car. I did the only thing I could possibly do!

We've had a couple of threads about Land Rovers lately, so here's what a real one looks like:

100_2084-vi.jpg

Just in case anyone forgets!

I've "spotted" this MkX before, but finding it down a side street, and in company, was a bit of a surprise.

100_2087-vi.jpg

100_2089-vi.jpg

"Company" is a Singer Vogue, about 1964. Neither car looked like it was in use.

I've passed this many times and finally got the snap:

100_2102-vi.jpg

Mazda 929, about 1984 I think. Another one that never seems to move.

100_2109-vi.jpg

This splendid piece has come over from Rochdale, in the hands of a very enthusiastic couple who've had it 20 years! They turned up at our club meeting a couple of weeks ago. It's a 1965 220SE, by the way.

Speaking, as we were, of cars that never move: here's a selection from a yard in the middle of Paphos, where old cars go to die, it appears!

100_2112-vi.jpg

100_2113-vi.jpg

100_2114-vi.jpg

Early Beetle, 47 Chevy (still on UK plates) and Saab estate, missing a side window. Also in this yard you can usually see a Porsche 911 Targa, a 928 and a C4 Corvette. Not to mention a load of boats...

This is so lovely I thought it was worth two photos...

100_2121-vi.jpg

100_2120-vi.jpg

Plain and basic, just how a Mini van should be, and top condition. Made my day. 8)

I've accumulated a few more pics now, so here they are for your delectation and delight...

We'll start with one you've seen before, but it was white then!

100_2125-vi.jpg

100_2126-vi.jpg

100_2127-vi.jpg

As you can see, my mate Ian has been busy over the hot summer (when I've done bugger all at my A40, ). These were taken in my back yard when he called round to show off the new paint. I can always hear him approaching!

Now for some roadside spotting...

100_2128-vi.jpg

Triumph 1300 (FWD) and a little pickup, Mazda I think, left to rot in a garden. You get a lot of that here...

100_2134-vi.jpg

Facelift Rover 800, sent for scrap. Where it sits is wide open to the road, and as you can see there are enough other cars around it. When I shot this, just yards in front (but out of shot) was a SsangYong Musso 4x4 with a broken windscreen. I've seen a couple of those lying about, I'll try to shoot one...

100_2138-vi.jpg

And while we're thinking about cheap old 4x4s, here's the daddy! Surprisingly, no shortage of Nivas in Paphos, I must have half a dozen on my radar now. This one just happened to be parked up where I was in a traffic-light queue.

100_2141-vi.jpg

CAV... oh no, it's an Opel Vectra, sorry. Couldn't resist it even so. From the front it looked even more down-at-heel, which is probably suitable given that it was parked outside a Sunday market/car boot patronised mostly by the Brit expat crowd.

100_2142-vi.jpg

Leyland truck hasn't moved in at least two-and-a-half years; I spotted it almost as soon as we arrived here, and even then it looked like it had been sitting a while. It's just off one of the major tourist roads in Paphos.

Now here is a treat! I didn't know they even made these, although logic suggests they would have done...

100_2137-vi.jpg

100_2136-vi.jpg

100_2135-vi.jpg

The badging says both Yugo and Zastava, and the front sheet-metal says Fiat 128, so I reckon this will be based on the 311 series. The number plate suggests about 1991, but that's not entirely reliable. As usual, it doesn't appear to have been used for some time, but as it's on a public road (the turning space at the end of a cul-de-sac) it's going to be tough finding the owner. Enquiries are in hand, I like this very much. So much so that you might possibly see it in my signature list one day...

I did promise you this, after a recent Grin comment...

100_2176-vi.jpg

I think it's a 250S, about 1968-ish. We tend to get the low-power versions here because of the ludicrous tax rules, which impose serious import duty on large engines, then hit you for road tax by capacity too. My 2.5 litre Vauxhall (Isuzu) pickup costs 221 euros a year; my friends has an Isuzu 4x4 with a 3.1 in it, which costs her over 600.

Sorry, no other spots of late, although I did post some in the Beige thread...

Another superb selection there Eddy.

What's this, behind the LR?

100_2084-vi.jpg

I do hope you can pull off the acquisition of this little honey...

100_2136-vi.jpg

It would be the only one on Autoshite, I don't think even Bickle has one!

Posted

Behind the LR is a Mk2 Escort, one of many lurking in the same place. And I never thought of that, but wouldn't it be cool to have a bit of Iron Curtain tat that nobody else has? Polonez? Pah! :D

Posted

100_2102-vi.jpg

Not being familier with that style have you anymore pics?

No, but I don't expect it's moved, I'll see what I can do.

NGOWYC, even when you know it's going to piss down all day...

100_2181-vi.jpg

...you never know what's going to be in the traffic. Note bonus Transit in the next lane...

100_2182-vi.jpg

You also never know what you're going to just drive past, in a random back street. This Capri had no badges on it, leading me to suppose that the Ghia wheels are a lie, and it's most likely a basic 1.3.

100_2183-vi.jpg

100_2184-vi.jpg

Then I found this, which I thought was worth shooting from both ends...^

100_2185-vi.jpg

And finally this, shot from the gate at maximum zoom. I was able to speak with the wife of the owner; apparently he restored it a couple of years ago, but hasn't used it and she thinks it'll want restoring again. I hate waste.

Posted

Yes Michiel, isn't that shovel-nose Toyota a honey :D

Eddy, is there much Zastava stuff there ? I ask, because they continued stamping out Fiat 900e 's with Zastava badging ( can't quite remember the type numbers they used, too much rum) but there were 3 or 4 variants, which all had inprovements over the Fiat parts, i.e chrome front & rear bumpers instead of Fiat's dissolving black tin gutter section, seen ANY there at all ? cheers, from de udda island....

Posted

Hi Lovejoy... sorry, I don't recall seeing a 900e here at all, Fiat, Zastava or otherwise. If I do, then of course I'll shoot it.

Green Mazda news: it seems to have been moved. I drove past yesterday and there was repaving going on where the car was parked, and no sign of the car.

Now, how about a trip to the hospital?

Little pickups like this are everywhere...

100_2187-vi.jpg

Hospital car park shite; couldn't resist two Rovers!

100_2188-vi.jpg

And just feet away was this Astra cabrio...

100_2189-vi.jpg

Finally, called in at the garage and found yet another Moke in for welding! Never seen so many!

Have some more...

I was just driving past on Saturday, in fact I was late home for lunch and expecting visitors, when I spotted this. Obviously I did the right thing, my visitors had to wait... :D

100_2203-vi.jpg

Then on Sunday I was on my way to the start of the club event I organised, when out of the corner of my eye, hiding down a side road, I caught a flash of dull silver...

100_2207-vi.jpg

So of course I had to stop and pap it!

This bike turned up at our start venue, I told Rod he could take part but he declined.

100_2211-vi.jpg

So on my way home, a casual glance into the side streets reveals this:

100_2214-vi.jpg

100_2215-vi.jpg

There's a few of these around Paphos, probably by different makers; I know in the early 70s you could buy buggy kits from a bewildering range of suppliers. This is almost their natural habitat!

This monstrosity is parked up beside a main road, hoping to attract a buyer. It's so bloody awful that it probably will!

100_2216-vi.jpg

And the other end...

100_2217-vi.jpg

Words fail me, and I'm supposed to be a writer!

So, a bit later all the participants and several members who had chosen not to for whatever reason, met up for lunch.

100_2218-vi.jpg

Today I took Mrs R back to the hospital for physio; this was parked by the entrance.

100_2225-vi.jpg

Now I know not everyone likes these, but I do, and especially over-decorated like this. Modern cars are not designed to have chrome; the PT really suits it, you can't add enough. I still prefer the red we had though (Inferno Pearl). Surprisingly there are at least 4 of these things running around Paphos. The white pickup in the background is mine, and you should be able to see Mrs R getting into her wheelchair...

I dropped my Granada down to the garage, finally, to get the balljoints done, and as Andreas was hip-deep in welding, I chose to walk home. It took me an hour, and you will understand why... :D First pap was this TurboDaily. I've never seen it move, which is a shame, I like these vans.

100_2227-vi.jpg

Then this Minor, which was in the garage the other week for assessment.

100_2228-vi.jpg

I believe Andreas told the owner "If you have to pay me to do this work, it's going to be well more than the value of the car" or words to that effect. As a DIY project on the other hand, it would work rather well, Minors are well-supported. Don't think it's for sale...

There's some road construction going on nearby, which is a pain; this is one of the major routes in and out of Paphos. I haven't seen these trucks at work but at least they're together!

100_2229-vi.jpg

These DAFs are at least 25 years old so it's good to see them still on the job, as it were.

So, continuing up the main road...

100_2230-vi.jpg

Let's have a Pony pickup! This lives at a tyre shop, and until very recently I would see it out and about. Across the road you can just about see an Esso petrol station, this is one I use frequently. The owner loves to see my old cars coming in. He's something of a rally nut and has a display case filled with model rally cars in his shop!

A little further up we come to the Opel dealership. They keep their "used" section across the road, which happens to be the side I was walking up. I knew there was a tat corner...

100_2231-vi.jpg

100_2232-vi.jpg

Yes, the price on the screen of the Alfa does say 500, and I would expect that is in euros. How long it's been sitting there, and what state it's in, are a bit more open to debate!

And finally, as promised some time ago, one for my friend due east!

100_2233-vi.jpg

Bonus Montego too! I didn't know that was there until I was preparing to shoot the Hunter.

So after that I returned to the main road and strolled the rest of the way home, damp from the light showers but light of heart thanks to all the Shite.

HOWL! I didnt realise you spotted this! Looks pretty good, nice to know there is a mk1 Rover 800 in Cyprus, certainly nearer the Middle East should I find myself there, I know where to look for one. There is hope!

If you see it again I'd be most greatful if you could get a few more pics.

Thanks Eddy. :D

Funny you should say that, I DID see it again, on Sunday! If I catch it parked up I'll certainly pap it again, with pleasure.

Garlic-flavoured update!

We'll start with a pic Mrs R received on Facebook, I don't know where it originated but I think it'll go down well here...

Ren12limo-vi.jpg

Don't know if it's Renault, Dacia, or what, but who cares, enjoy!

OK, went out shopping this afternoon, and of course took the camera.

100_2236-vi.jpg

Peely paint! And from this supermarket, onwards to the next...

100_2237-vi.jpg

Some grey-import Toyota, but wait, what's this on the back?

100_2238-vi.jpg

OMG I'm famous! Some day I will have to have one of these! :D

I did promise you some garlic...

100_2239-vi.jpg

Strangely, you don't see many Xantias in use around Paphos, although I do know of one or two laid up.

100_2240-vi.jpg

I spotted this engineless P6 as I drove past, so turned around to pap it. Then I realised what was beside it...

100_2241-vi.jpg

There's another P6 round the corner, a red one, but I couldn't get a shot. And yes, that's my pickup behind...

Now this should stir a few loins..

100_2242-vi.jpg

Solara! With a Suzuki Alto hiding behind it.

Posted

That Dacia is deffo photoshopped.

Posted

Excellent upd8 - is that bare steel on the peely paint car??

Posted

Photoshop o not, it made me smile, so I thought I'd share...

Michiel, yes, I believe it is bare steel. You do see some rubbish around here, but that caught my eye.

Posted

Let's start this batch with a project, shall we? For sale, complete with trailer, and the number plate reads DA 007...

100_2244-vi.jpg

This next one just caught my eye, so I shot it quick...

100_2247-vi.jpg

And this one has been sitting by the sea for at least two years, not too much rust considering!

100_2248-vi.jpg

It is in fact the one mentioned in my Plea thread, for which we need a mirror. As you can see, it's without one at present.

Now, I remembered a stash of cars from a while back, so today I drove up this lane on the offchance, bearing in mind I haven't been up there for at least 18 months... and they're all still there!

100_2250-vi.jpg

100_2251-vi.jpg

They're actually easier to see with the naked eye, even from the road, but in summary: there's a white Montego next to a yellow Datsun pickup, which dates from about 1976; and there's a white Hunter, or possibly Minx, and although you can't see it, another Datsun pickup too. The Hunter's from about 1968. PH, are you with me? :D

Posted

100_2142-vi.jpg

Somebody asked what model this was. I drove by again the other day and read the plate on the grille. According to that, it's a Boxer.

Wow, I didn't realise how slack I've been here. Have some more!

100_2355-vi.jpg

Little Toyota pickup has come into Andreas's garage for a bit of restoration. Not bad for 30-ish years old!

100_2332-vi.jpg

I spotted this from the end of the road, so next day I went back, in the Granada this time, and found...

100_2331-vi.jpg

V6 manual

100_2358-vi.jpg

These things are all over, and some, like this one, are even still earning a living! The T prefix on the plate denotes a taxi.

And a few from today (Saturday, that is), crawling the back streets of Paphos...

100_2359-vi.jpg

 I mean, seriously:  Have a bonus...

100_2360-vi.jpg

100_2361-vi.jpg

And just next door, with bonus moped (in-)action:

100_2362-vi.jpg

100_2363-vi.jpg

And another bonus moped, or scooter, or something. Is Simson a known maker?

Posted

GR8 spots as ever Eddy. Love the Green Jag. The Morris Minor Van looks like its got one of those old-stye 6 digit number plates. Did you get a chance to see that Blue mk1 Rover Sterling yet? :D

Posted

6 digit plates are current here! The number on the Minor dates back to about 1991, so I wonder where it was before that? As for the blue Rover, I haven't seen it lately, but I will, don't worry...

Posted

Some more, from a random ride around town....

100_2364-vi.jpg

Starting with not one but two Leyland Clydesdales!

100_2365-vi.jpg

Yet another yellow Beetle, I must have found more like this than any other colour.

100_2366-vi.jpg

T25 and Suzuki Swift... there's a 90s Alfa hiding behind the van, I couldn't work that in... sorry.

100_2367-vi.jpg

OK, any offers? I think it might be a Daihatsu of some kind, it's a type I don't think I've seen before. No badges on the bits I could see, and the front was pointing into a cul-de-sac so I couldn't get a look.

100_2368-vi.jpg

There will be more Peugeots, read on...

100_2369-vi.jpg

100_2370-vi.jpg

Pair of Amazons, standing guard over an orchard, or grove, or whatever it is...

100_2371-vi.jpg

Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag! And bonus Hyundai Coupe hiding down the side of the building.

100_2372-vi.jpg

Angry Dicky, are you watching? You don't know what you're going to find when you crawl round an industrial estate, do you?

100_2373-vi.jpg

As previously mentioned, the T on the number plate denotes a taxi (also used for buses) and the little blue plate suggests that it's actually workable. Not one I've seen on the road though.

100_2374-vi.jpg

Probably the best 504 pickup I've seen here, with mine behind it! Still for sale...

100_2375-vi.jpg

And finally today, to leave you with a garlic aftertaste, a 504 saloon. I've been meaning to get this one for months. There's also a Merc 123 here but I find it almost impossible to work up any enthusiasm for those. They're literally everywhere, unlike the frogs.

Just a couple today...

100_2376-vi.jpg

LHD Rangie looking a bit disabled! No steering wheel either, and I think some of the seats have gone too. I'd love to know the story!

100_2379-vi.jpg

1971 Cortina advertising a bar called... The Sixties! This car was looking really shabby when I first spotted it (in exactly the same place), but last year went though some body restoration. It drives too, I saw it on the road. Once only.

That's been through W&P or Overfinch or some such.

It has a custom dashboard, flared arches and the paint looks a bit nicer than what the factory were throwing on back in '84/85.

Mine had the same dash and wheel arches. I'd say W&P.

I thought it was about time for a few more, gathered over the last couple of weeks.

100_2403-vi.jpg

So, out and about in back lanes and up the hillside I can see a Herald... and a half!

100_2404-vi.jpg

Not wishing to do things by halves, here's another half! Can't tell if this poor old CF has been half-finished, or done, used and retired, but I want one...

100_2405-vi.jpg

Now I know we like an A60 round here. I've papped this before, but was able to get a much better shot this time. Note the background: the blue-striped white Vectra is a retired copcar.

And here we are at my friend's garage again...

100_2407-vi.jpg

100_2413-vi.jpg

100_2414-vi.jpg

100_2415-vi.jpg

And finally... I followed a tipoff and a hunch, and found this sexy beast!

100_2417-vi.jpg

100_2420-vi.jpg

Second angle well deserved, I think. In case you haven't spotted it, this 61 is the same colour my 62 was. I'm in love...
