Since i moved to my current house, the last 2winters have been like this.

So i had the chance of this yesterday,101 k miles most service history, but more importantly taxed to the end of the year and mot'd to the 22nd of december.

It's been used to tow a 1000 kg caravan and a set of window cleaner ladders for the last 4 years, will it make it through the winter,or its next mot? Heck will it even last to the 22nd of december !

Time will tell !

They do go surprisingly rusty underneath, so I'd get a good slathering of underseal on pronto, also check the cooling system, as V8s do like to pop a head gasket if the system hasn't been flushed recently.

I had a 5.9L Limited one of these and it was a blast. V8's suffer from plenum gasket leak http://consolidatedservices.net/jeeplamp/TSB%20Intake.pdf and they end up burning oil at an alarming rate. Also the 249 transfer cases are prone to failure. Repair/replacement to the viscous coupling are expensive and a swap to a 242 is usually the way forward. If it's the I6 then you might get the 242 Transfer case also known as Selec-Trac, if have an option to select 2WD then that's what you've got.

Its a 4.0l with the permanent 4wd but with shiftable hi-lo,ill get the sill sorted out before the salt goes down, and see how it goes from there.

Nice to see I'm not the only one thinking ahead until Winter! Nor am I the only one who's not sure if they're new 'perfect for winter' 4x4 will actually last that long...

I'm a fan of these after Pete-M's one towed my Maser back from the N. East. They even look quite decent, in 'Grand Cherokee' format. I'd defo have one of these, 2.5 diesel obv (BEST ENGINE OF ALL TIME)

More important than the car will be some knobbly tyres, and if you can find steel rims, all the better, won't break should you slide into a kerb or whatnot.

-1.

One of these tried to kill me because I had the audacity to expect it to do 9mph round in the rain on a roundabout near Crewe.

Ideally i wanted something with a longer mot,but for £300 i won't grumble too much, next mot will be the decider if it stays .

The real trouble is balancing the compromises you make to have a 4x4,

I have to travel 15 miles each way to work over several hills, and there is always some dickhead in a bmw/mercedes/lexus getting stuck on the hills and blocking the road, so a couple of years ago, for the winter, I bought this:

Which was great at being a 4wd for the shitty white stuff, but hopeless as everything else, slow, noisey and too small, oh and crap on fuel too.

I paid £550 for the vitara and outed it the next easter for £800, in a roundabout way the money from that went to this:

Whilst it is still shite for fuel economy, it is great as 4x4 and for being mahoosive inside, great for collecting ebay tat with :)

My advice? Save a little harder, aim a little higher, get a delica!

This is purely a winter beater ,money wasn't the issue travelling to look at overpriced sheds was! £300 and its legal, 3.5 ton towing capacity for tat collecting,my commute is 3 miles,so economy isn't important.

That's a bargain for £300 all right it doesn't look too bad at all. Is the 4litre a straight six on these?

I've used mine for loads of towing missions. It's on LPG which helps, and completely and utterly rot free.

Last few years I've bought a shitetrak ....great in the snow and very light.. and a MK1 lwb shogun..not quite as good cos of the weight but at least you could actually carry some passengers etc. The shitetrak is tiny.

Will make a call in the next month but will probably order winter tyres for the yugo..its got good ground clearance and is nice and light....or of course...there's always the HARDCORE SHITEISTS solution.............buy a Niva!

Seem to be thin king along the same lines.

I've recently swopped in a cheap old Ssangyong Musso for towage/winter duties. Currently looking for steel rims & winter tyres..

68,000 milers, pretty tidy -worth a bowl of cornflakes.

Back in the 1996 our three directors ordered three brand new ones of these: P940-942JOV. One of them proved very troublesome the other two were quite reliable. One of them is still using one as a tow car!

yes, the two timing chains seem to finish off most of them, but for the amount we paid for it, i would get another.

its well kitted out too...leather, electric everything, hi-lo box, cruise control, compass!, rear stereo controls and headphone sockets for the little ones.

mpg is a little salty... averaging 18mpg.
