Allegro Save - my second attempt at Aggro ownership!

If you read my thread about replacement car windows you will know that I was looking at this Allegro on e-bay.

I won it for £225. During the listing (before anyone had bid) the drivers door window was smashed by kids . He was going to scrap the car the day after the listing had ended if it didn't sell!

Well it has just arrived and it looks pretty promising. The engine is really sweet it is showing 70k on the clock and has had electronic ignition fitted. It looks solid underneath there is one bit of grot on the rear offside wheelarch. The bodywork is decent except it needs a good clean and the interior is pretty tidy apart from the shards of glass which I have started to sweep up. I have bodged some blue polythene (borrowed from work) over the drivers window. For some reason it has a series 2 grill which I will probably replace with a series 3 one if I can find it. Also it is supposed to be Silver but it looks much more Gold to me!!

It arrived without a battery but I picked up one for 20 quid from a local scrappy this afternoon, who also reckoned he has some Renault 14 bits so will be going back to check those out!!

I will next week, courtesy of the very kind Mr. Lankytim be picking up a replacement window.

I have managed to clear half of it up, I suspect I will be finding shards of glass for months to come!!

Driveway of WIN! Glad it's turned out to be ok. Well done for the save. And if you get some Renault 14 bits from the scrappy as well, even better!

Good save! Looks like a pretty tidy example too, so well done indeed.

Thanks both, looking forward to getting it on the road.

Well he reckons he has bits for other Renaults I think he mentioned the 20 and some others. Will enquire some more, maybe useful to some other shiters as well.

Great save, and a good companion for the 14! Lots of Allegro love on here at the moment :)

Thanks all once more for your encouragement and comments.

No the MOT was up last October so it had been sitting since then. The Shiply guy hooked a battery up and it started instantly apparently. Have had a quick look underneath and it looks pretty solid, just quite a lot of mud!!

I had one for a couple of months at the end of last year, unfortunately it smoked so much it tended to obliterate the looks of bemusement :) !! This one certainly seems to be good mechanically.

I suppose it and the 14 were close competitors at the time!

I love me an Allegro3 - it was my first car after all. :D

I wonder why it has that series 2 grille.

Excellent save, there. My first ever car was an Allegro 1100, so full of love for the buggers.

Not sure, the advert had photographs of it with both grills. I reckon the vendor probably preferred the series 2 grille, unless it had a minor mishap however I cannot see any sign of damage. He has not left the series 3 grille in the car.

I will probably try to get a series 3 grille, it looks fine but I like to keep it original as possible if possible!!

They do have a certain charm thats for sure. Much better to drive than people give them credit for, my old one was fun and that was with a knackered engine so hopefully this will be more enjoyable!!

Superb save there! Hope it doesn't need too much commissioning to get back on the road.

There's a series 3 Allegro in my local scrappers, it has a drivers window (last time when I went it did) and a good front grille amongst other goodies. I can give you the number if you wanna try them?

Hi Greengardside,

Thankyou, it looks from my very untrained eye to be pretty solid underneath. Will take it for an MOT in a couple of weeks however there is no hurry so if it needs work I can get it done over time.

The number of the Scrapyard would be great thankyou, I do have a window sorted thanks to Lankytim but it could be useful for other parts including a grille.
