Just bought this shite of Gumtree!

Well, it's been a couple of weeks since any French tat landed here in Winterley, so. . .

I was fitting a new rad to fellow shite-ist Chris Lee's R11 Electronic last week when he mentioned an ad he'd seen on Gumtree. It was for a car that's not Renault's best effort - even though it won COTY 1982. Anyway, I've fancied one for a while, so here are some photos the owner sent.

It's a 1984 9 GTL Avenue special edition in Cosmic Blue. Done about 43k with history, handbooks etc. Taxed until October but no test. Will need a pair of wings and the paint looks shit on the bonnet. Have just ordered new wings and front bumper trim from Renault :D

Currently on the back of a transporter on the M40 8)

Fantastic. Those seats are great! My Dad had a Renault 9. They're firmly ok - 1982 must have been a quiet year!

Nice - I had an 11 which was pretty much the same thing and yes, excellent seats (until mine fell to bits).

You don't see many of those anymore (There might be a reason for that!).

Nice to see it being saved by a enthusiast though.

Welcome to the '9' club. I've been using one (till my back trouble) regularily -loads of fun.

Looks like a nice one, too

If you want to sell the towbar....

I'll let you know when it's eventually removed! I don't intend to keep it on the car.

Hey you're a pretty serious rennershite Jedi by the looks of it!!! Nice work. Next time you're in crewe give me a shout and i'll buy you a pint. Or if you need a bit of A-frame help or tool lendage or whatever.

Skillful!

AS has seen a massive influx of Franco-shite recently - long may it continue.

Right. This really is shite! I mean, I've had a couple of 5s recently which were pocket money, but mint. This was pocket money, but it's fookin awful

Seriously, it's pretty good, with a MASSIVE history and it's still MOT'd which the seller said had run out already. However, if you know the 9/11, you'll know why most buyers who moved from R18s had a shock - you usually wrap a turkey up in thicker metal then Renault used for the body on these things. So putting a general purpose roof rack on this has really done the roof the world of good

The paint from the doors back is feckin awful, but having done a rear quarter, it will come back nicely. However, I knew it would need new wings, but the entire front end has been painted using aerosols - wtf! This includes most of the bonnet and that which has been painted is coming off. I'll have all this sorted and the stripe is easy to make-up. The front seat material is (like most Renaults) not attached to the seats and the drivers material is badly worn. I also need to check where the water on the passenger side mat has come from - it's not from the heater matrix. Other bits, the front bumper is fooked (there's a new one waiting) and there's a fairly bad flat spot as soon as the throttle is opened.

The alloys will clean up a treat though :D

If anybody here knows who had the 9/11 trim from A C Williams in Ancaster, please put me in touch (wasn't Wuvvum was it?) I need the two roof trims. More pics to follow!

The good news is that there will be loads of parts still about, as production of the 9 only stopped in 2001.

The bad news is that most of the recent production took place in Colombia.

Nice find there Mr 18, looks a good'un. Good luck with it.

I briefly owned the American version of the Renault 9, the AMC-built Renault Alliance. This car proved that a bunch of fat ex-dairy farmers from Wisconsin could slap together Renaults with the same level of indifference to quality and workmanship as the French! The headgasket on my 1.4 litre car was made from cheese and the cabin was constructed from the most brittle plastic know to man. My Renault days ended when the engine droped a conrod through the sump, spewing oil all over the road. Luckily, I was within walking distance of home.

This was the car responsible for killing Renault's reputation in North America. Renault packed up and left our shores for good in 1987 and today their cars are as rare as rocking horse poo on American roads. Funny this is, apart from the nightmare unreliability, I really liked the damn thing!

Hope you have better luck with yours than I had with mine!

Renaults had actually been pretty reliable until they lost the plot somewhere in the early-to-mid-1990s.

I had a stack of /11 stuff from AC Williams. Some went with my R11 when I sold it but I still have a stack of stuff. I have new chrome trims for the bumper tops. Don't think I have gutter trims though. There's new headlights and a whole big box of smaller bits and bobs. If you want to come fetch it all you can take the lot for £20. I'll gather it all up and take a pic if you're interested.

Now that's what I call good news. :D

Many thanks for that - PM sent.

Predictably perhaps, but I like that!

There should be some sort of medal awarded - services to saving old Renners or something
