Today I got the oil suction pump and managed to renew a good chunk of the PS fluid in the Accord...so I took it for a spin to a little town 15 miles from here, where I was going to have a haircut (as the city centre place I got recommended wanted to charge me 13.50) in order to check for funny noises. Apart from the amazing fact that all THREE barbers in that town were closed, at 4pm on a Wednesday (!!), I drove away with a puncture. Of course, it was on the one wheel that I haven't been able to free from the nonsense of the locking wheel nuts. Ironically, I've managed to find the key, but that was not until after they had a go at getting rid of the nut, which has changed the shape sufficiently for it to become fucked either way.

 

Fortunately, I was carrying my 'jump starter and air compressor' thingy which helped get pressure back to a level where I could drive home without risking an accident or even damaging the tyre.

 

Found an independent fast fit place near there, they spent just over 15 mins trying to get the bloody thing out but didn't manage any success. This, in turn, meant I arrived at my neighbourhood tyre centre just in time to see the owner's van departing after having closed for the day, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to see whether anything can be achieved.

 

As the puncture is a nail sitting right in the middle of the tread pattern, and the tread is pretty good, I'm seriously thinking about removing the nail, filling the thing with tyreweld and just forgetting about it...

Don't do it. Tyre weld doesn't work longterm, stinks ( I mean really stinks) and means the tyre can't be properly repaired. Don't know why you're mang drama out of it though. Just go to bed and get it sorted tomorrow.

The drama is because I have a funny feeling that they won't be able to remove the wheel tomorrow.

Once I went for a drive and the wipers smeared a mixture of flies, dust and water across the screen. It was unpleasant.

 

Another time one of the headlight bulbs blew, night driving proved a bit frustrating!

You do seem to live a very dramatic life Luxo, If it's just a nail in the centre of the tyre then the garage will just stick a plug in it, About £10-15 the last time i had it done.

 

As CIH said, make a cup of tea and head to bed and worry about it tomorrow!

That sounds good...I guess it sounds pretty logical, but I've never had a puncture repair that didn't involve wheel removal...Wonder why the place I went to didn't try it.

The wheel will still need to come off as they have to remove the tyre to get the nail out and plug the inside, I'm sure they will have a tool to remove the locking nuts, It might just mean that you will have to get a need bolt from a scrappy.

well, that's the thing...2 garages (one when I was changing front tyres and told them to break the locking nuts all 'round and another today) haven't been able to remove the bugger, hence why I am not optimistic about the chances of the third...

Any half decent garage will get it off in minutes. It's really not that hard.

It's easy enough to remove the locking wheel nut so long as you have a decent socket to hammer on - I had to do it on my Hyundai when I stupidly mislaid the key round at a mates house...

 

 

If I can do this at my house, without any fancy tools, any garage should be able to do this in 5mins!

Not according to Holts Tyreweld - I picked up a couple of cans when I lost the locking wheel nut - I was going back and forth between Newport (Wales) and Galashiels every other weekend and couldn't afford to be stranded.

That's pretty much the same price that I would pay for a tyre from the scrappies fitted at the local garage...well £15 would be.

Why does your Scorpio have locking wheel nuts? That's a bit belt and braces - they have locking hub cap nuts as standard, at least the 16" multi-spoke alloys do.

Good question about the Scorpio- the wheels were swapped over from another car, but AFAIK that had also been a Scorpio.

 

As to the Accord, took it to the nearby place today:

 

- Here's the key to the locking nut, but it's pretty stuck and possibly deformed.

- OK, leave it with us and we'll see what we can do.

- If you can't unlock it, just chop it off.

- I don't think that would be possible.

- Well, the wheel needs to be removed so just do your best and let me know...

Can you get someone to weld an old wheelnut onto it? Often does the trick!

 

Whenever I buy a new piece of shite and find locking wheel nuts one of the first things I do is to replace them with normal nuts, the reasoning being that 15-20 years down the line modern day wheel thieves will find them too unappealing to steal making locking nuts unnecessary and as you have found, they never want to come off when you want them to!

 

Just take it to an ATS or similar place, they will have the tools to get the nut off and repair the tyre- they must see it all the time.

 

P.S I found a big nail in one of the rear tyres of my audi, I pulled it out and found it hadn't gone through, i.e NO PUNCTURE.- result! A few weeks later I found a big piece of metal swarf sticking out of the same tyre, again, this had failed to penetrate. W0000t!!1!

I have a puncture on the DAF but did not start a thread on it and therefore its still flat. This will come in handy though......

Next time, you may try actually reading something before commenting on it. Unless of course the wiper blades came off and started scratching the windscreen, and then you couldn't find a replacement screen or something...

However, I was, and still am, fuming about the situation...3 'specialist' tyre garages (i.e. 'mechanics' who only deal with tyres all day and probably couldn't do an oil change to save their lives), the last one had it for over 5 hours, and it's still not sorted!
