Obscure Jap shite

I seem to have bought the ultimate gay car. Early nineties Toyota Sera............50k miles, pretty much mint condition, with a bizarre stereo with about eleventy million speakers [factory option] Obv, the stereo doesn't work, and it won't be as simple as a fuse....

WTF are these worth, if anything?

Perhaps our resident porn star would be interested, should be right up his [ahem] alley

I'll take some, but due to basic computer incompetemce, I'll probably have to email some kind soul on here to post them for me.

Photobucket is your friend..

I like these, how can gullwing(-ish) doors not be cool?

What it is, 1.6 with an auto box? Would 1.6 make it a 4AGE?

Buggered if I know. Sir Trig is going to stick some pics up later this evening, I'll do an arty under bonnet shot. It's a 4 speed auto

Be interested to hear how you get on with this.

Only ''expert' I know of is Omicron -the Lancia specialist in Norfolk. Owner (Martin Cliffe)'s son moved into these.

I understood it can get quite hot under the glass -and ventilation isnt good. But that could all be hearsay

They're not that bad, but they should have had the Starlet Turbo motor as standard.

5E-FHE according to the owner's club

They have rather necessary air-conditioning. I've driven one in fairly hot conditions and it's ok. Of course, once the air-con runs out of gas, you're cooking.

Bit unexciting to drive, but the bubble-effect certainly feels very odd!

Brave buy, colc! Always glad to see someone saving an oddity like this. It's probably worth a fish supper for two, but at least if you keep it tidyish it won't depreciate any further. Enjoy it for a year or two and see how the market is then, if you still want to. Looking forward to the pics...

Thanks, Trig. As you can see, littered with speakers. The ones on the parcel shelf are mahoosive [remember this is all Toyota O.E] Stereo doesn' t work [obv] I think the amp is bollocksed.

Posted

I think they are GR9 - dead uncool but that's the appeal! I've seen them for sale with the turbo engine conversion/transplant and I guess that would be fun :D

Posted

I think it's fab!, It's the Ford Puma/Vauxhall Tirga for people with big balls.

Posted

It would be worth owning one of those just for the doors! :D

Posted

Turbo would be handy in that I could drive very quickly past people who know me........

I would too. At least this one doesn't look buggered about with. There was a silver one about here, with black tribal graphics on, and large rims on stock suspenders. The look of that one would tend to suggest (to me at least) that they're best left stock-ish. An amp shouldn't be the hardest fix, surely? Bin the old one, once you've found one with the right footprint, and connections.

On the definite upside, you'll not get boxed in down at Tescos...

Not a spot of rust, bit of laquer fade right at the top of the door by the "T bar thingy. Goes ok, although I think it's fairly heavy ..those doors. I reckon you could unbolt them, and end up with a ridiculous convertible........

I've always fancied these! I had one of those insanely comprehensive 'world car catalogues' when I was younger and these were in it a bit before they started being sold over here, I thought they looked the bollocks back then and still kinda do, although now I can see they are probably quite boring to live with and a little tiny bit gay. Still, good work, I'll be interested to hear what it's like to drive/ live with.

I'd love one - are those speakers aftermarket? I'm sure no car would have that many, they look too new for the car?

There's one for sale on RR for a (possibly optimistic) 4000 pounds. They're rare and people don't know what they are, so you can't really put a value on them.

Posted

No, all those speakers are OE. It was an option caleed the "Super Live Sound System". The one on mine is as dead as a Dodo.

Ooh, fancy! I quite like those for their WTF@BBQ factor.

Cool, I put these in a 'Jap "sports" cars I'm ashamed to like' category along with the Toyota Paseo and Nissan 100NX.

Out of all the Jap imported cars, the Sera is probably my favourite. I’ve always fancied one.

I'd imagine they’d be rather simple to maintain. Aren’t the mechanics based on a mix of the Paseo and indeed the Starlet? Could prove interesting bodywork-wise though…

Might be up for grabs if anyone fancies a swop...I'd sell for a bag of sand, if that gives some indication of value

It's amazing how the Japanese motor industry can be so conservative and boring in some respects, then make a car like this, or the Mazda AZ-1 at the same time.

The Japanese as a race have quite a low tolerance to alcohol, so perhaps that explains the decision making process :D
