I'd beg to differ - minors are pretty tough cars -

The reason why you don't see many if any pre 1970 British Cars in Europe is that BMC targetted the commonwealth markets with their cars - it was a captive market and don't forget that we didn't join the EC until 1967 so our exports to Europe were subect to import tax whereas France, Italy, Germany had no barriers to trade. It made economic sense for BMC to sell their cars to tne Commonwealth which, until 1967 was a far more important market to the UK than it is now.

That makes sense for Europe...but what about the really tough places in S. America, Middle East and Africa? I don't have hard data to hand, but it seems to me that, for example, Peugeot have always been very big in Kenya and VW in S. Africa, and we're talking Commonwealth states...not to mention the massive VW operations in places like Brazil and Mexico. These countries, plus places like Greece, Portugal (both didn't join the EU till the 1980s, both had crap roads until EU money got pumped in, both produced 2CVs and/or derivatives) and Turkey should have been fair game for BL, but, apart from the Mini (and, to a lesser extent, some top-end Jaguar/Rover/Triumph stuff) their cars didn't really succeed, certainly nowhere near the levels of 2CVs and Beetles. Heck, in all my years in Greece, I reckon I've seen more Zastava 750s (!!) than Minors!

thats probably because they were produced fairly locally,i reckon i have seen more minors over here than zastava 750's.

Never thought much of the Rover 800's. Dissapointing after the Sd1 - crap plastics etc

9_Renault_25.jpg

Renault 25. Ugly/bland/fragile like a few Renaults.

Both worshiped on here and rightly so - autoshite cars they are but just not for me.

well, of course they were fairly local in terms of geography, but you have to remember that Yugoslavia was an Eastern Bloc country, so, even before the EU days, there had always been more restrictions/taxes on importing stuff from there than from France/Germany/Italy/the UK.

(forgot to say in my previous post that the Mini was of course very successful in S. Europe, but I think it was mostly due to "style" and practicality as opposed to toughness....hence not so many sales in Africa)

greece where you saw them wasn't an eastern block country though.have you ever been in the back of a large modern 4 seater? no sacrifices to comfort there!

i try not to dislike a car until atleast i have driven one that isn't fucked.

haha...it may well be a good idea to drive a Minor! Can't see myself liking it, but it would make for an interesting experience!

Morris Minor for me. Just does nothing well unless you count breaking and rusting but inexplicably popular so I see a lot of them.

Could never get excited about Morris Minors either. Have always liked the VW Beetle & Fiat 500 though. Would much prefer to drive a Morris Marina than a Minor but then I prefer like my taste in music I prefer the 1970s stuff over the 1950s and 60s.

I had to Google 'Banham' .

Oooooh, FWD Rovers. Yeah.

Some of them aren't that bad, the 420 Turbo was a grin, but the first of the Rondas should have been the last. They should have stopped, looked at the thing and thought "Tell ya what, shut the company. If this is the best we can manage we should stop now".

I just don't get them at all.

Metro / R100. No space and a massive sill to clamber over , in a car designed for gormless pensioners.

The old Hyacinth Bucket 213/216 was a bland car with bugger all suspension travel and a few planks of wood nailed to the dash.

The later Kettle series ones were no better. Small inside, overpriced, shite suspension, bugger all room and jap switchgear.

The 600 was a joke, ok the Ti went rather well, but the interiors are foul, beige plasticky items and it's obviously not a Brit car. Like sitting in a hearing aid, most of 'em.

The 800... dearie me. I've tried to like 'em, but they're just shit. Terrible ride, cheap bits everywhere and the Honda 2.7 was no replacement for the SD1's V8. The Kettle series V6 would have been nicer if it had ever worked, but still devoid of torque. I bought an 827SLi and regretted it instantly. The auto box was schizophrenic, the ride was dismal, it was shit on fuel and things randomly worked on it - not bad for a six year old, 60k mile FSH car.

MGF could have worked, if they'd followed the MX5 way of doing things and done a front engine, RWD, coil sprung car instead of half a metro shoved in the back of a Honda Beat lookylikey.

R25/45 cynical, old bits with a load more chrome shoved on.

75 - nice car, let down badly by lack of development. Should have been a success, but they fitted the V6 Kettle series lump to most, and a detuned BMW turdodiseasel in the ones that actually worked occasionally. Lovely things to drive though.

Having said all that, I still want another ZT-T 260. Probably my favourite car of the last 5 years.

Actually the Mk1 Golf is another I don't get. Rust like Billy-o, seats self destruct and absolutely nothing about them seems to make them better than their rivals.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^agreed, also, no brakes, clutch cables that saw through the bulkhead, and an odd driving position.

Beekles (sic) Why? They're horrid rot boxes. They don't corner, and not terribly good in a straight line, with poor heaters and zero appeal. The old air-cooled ones aren't much better.

Seat Leon Cupras (not driven one though)

They drive bloody well... I'd have one.

Being a 5 door hatchback puts them low down on the list for a start, they'd have to drive amazingly well to make up for that. Not saying they dont..

They also have that genuine 'it's the same as a Golf but cheaper, must be good' opinion from the misguided.

I prefer them to Golfs. Hmm, I was offered a Mk4 Golf 1.6 for the Jeep the other day, I must get round to telling the bloke to do one.

I'd certainly consider a previous shape Cupra R. The current gen looks shit though, more MPV than hatchback. I'm not really sure what the point of Seat is anymore

The current ibiza drives me to distraction every time I see one because of the two swage lines... one from the back, one from the front both at different heights and angles... wtf? Looks worse in real life than any of the photos I can find.

New Focus.

Saw one looming in my rear-view on the M1 yesterday. The front bumper has a set of triangles making up the lower vent, and looks shite. And those rear lights! Why do they have to extend 2ft into the side of the car?

I'm sure they're a fantastic drive and all, but I can't help but think that Ford have dumbed down/shited up each successive generation. The Mk1 looked good, felt good, was good. The Mk2 is a good car, for sure, but lost most of the distinctiveness. And now this.

I'm with you on this. Much as I adore the old Mk1 Focus, the Mk2 is drab and VWesque in its looks. They drive well, better than a MkVIIIIIII Golf, but the fun and sheer ability of the old Mk1 seems to have been replaced by all that 'premium' bollocks that motoring magazines seem to crave. Soft-touch dash, SONY stereo, blah blah.

I don't want all that, I want cars that drive well. Couldn't give a toss about the viscosity of the damping on the frickin' grab handles.

Right, bit a of confession time from me.

Most of you know that I like Rover 800s, I like the 2.7 V6s, KV6s, 2.0 carbs, injections, mk1/mk2s, posh/poverty spec ones etc...

However, I've never really got the point of the mk2 (1991+) Rover 800 Vitesse Turbos. As I like Rover 800s I was expecting to like it straight away without question, however, after driving one, oh dear..... I really wanted to like them but I dont, I just cant get on with them, I dont like the ride, suspension set up or the shoddy 17" alloys they are often found sitting on, they kind of remind of an old man in a neat tuxedo/suit shod with trainers and a baseball cap trying to act cool.

I dislike sporty/turbo cars like MG Zwhatever, they are fun to drive but I'm not the kind of person who looks for a rollercoster ride everytime I pop to the shops.

That's what happens when you make a "world car"

- VAG stuff in general, driven umpteen modern VWs and couldn't really tell the difference from our work hack, a 200k mile ex taxi Octavia SDi. The older stuff leaves me cold, Mk1 and Mk2 Golfs included. And Beetles... urgh.

- The last generation Ford Fiesta, horrendously uncomfortable, gawky looking and just a bit pants.

- BMWs later than the E34 5-series.

- Mercs. All of them, up to and including the Sprinter. And the Vario. I just wouldn't thank you for them.

- Jaaaaaaaaags.

- Allegros.

- Rover 200/25s and 400/45 hatchbacks. Quite like the 400/45 saloon though, which I can't quite explain.

- The entire current Toyota range.

Probably more, that's all off the top of my head just now...

The original Focus just looks like this to me... It didn't appeal to me in 1998 and still doesn't today. I never liked the rear lights being practically stuck on the roof also. They did drive really well without doubt, but the seats used to bive me lower backache after a few hours behind the wheel. No idea why. It's replacement went the other way from being over-the-top in terms of styling to being instantly forgettable. I also thought the interior was (or felt) very cramped given the exterior dimensions. As for the new one, like most modern motors, is just plain bloated and ugly. I haven't driven one as of yet, so I can't comment any further.

Speaking of colours, I've never been fond of silver. Everyone seems to have it and to me, just looks like an unpainted bodyshell. Other than the ease of keeping it clean, I've never saw any appeal in silver.

Yes, I’m with you on both of those. The only ‘recent’ Jags that took my fancy were the X-Type and the S-Type. Both generally hated by certain sections of the press, but I adored both. The X Type, whilst a little light on the steering feedback, drove really well for me. I also adored the way the S Type looked from start to finish. I’d happily roll around in either. How anyone prefers the looks to the chronically bland, Hyundai-looking XF over the stately S-Type I’ll never know. The XF is universally overrated and the rear end of the new XJ puts me off one even before knowing any more about it. Hideous... The current XK also looks very ‘bland’ at the front. Something about those headlights too, which I can’t quite put my finger on what... I don’t like the direction they’re going in whatsoever.

As for Toytota’s, I’m glad you’ve brought this up. I thought I was the only one. Not a single model in the current range over the last two or three years has appealed to me. They’re not bland any more. They’re far worse - badly designed and bloated-looking. What is the ‘Urban Cruiser’ supposed to be...?! Having experienced an Auris shortly after launch, I was very disappointed with the general quality also. It felt very ‘cheap’ and built down to a limited budget. I question how these will last in the long-run.

Rear quarter looks even worse. Where's that tail light going ?

Can't wait to see them on 16" steels and wonky trims.

Not to mention that the glass area seems TINY. GR1 4 visibility!

I've never driven any, but any Japanese car post 1990-ish just doesnt do it for me. It all started when I my mate bought a MK2 Toyota MR2. It sounded great, handled great, had a lovely leather interior, including the dash, but I just didnt feel anything for it.

Now when I see any other Japanese car of a similar age, that experience puts me off. I know they are very good cars though.

I was also put off MK2 Golfs by the memory of my schoolfriend's mums red E-reg 5 door. The interior was horrible and greay and the engine was noisy. Again, bloody good cars I'm sure though.

Thank goodness! I thought I was on my own!

In the sea of silver or black Merc/BMW blobs that infest every city in the world now, even my white pickup looks good. The Granada, in blue with chrome and a vinyl roof, is from a whole other (and incomparably more stylish) planet!

The new Jag XJ. Awful looking thing, manages to make the current S class look elegant. However I like the XF.

Mk1 Golfs. They all seemed to be rattly rotboxes with no brakes until the very last ones (about 81 onwards) when VW suddenly worked out how to stop them rusting. I like Mk1 GTis though.

VW campervans, and all the wannabe VW crap like Commers and BMC J4s. In fact all Campervans, Transits, Sherpas, Hiaces and esp the modern ones towing Citroen C1s. Stay in a hotel for f**ks sake (I know I'm in a very small minority on there in this!)
