richardthestag Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Bad luck, I felt bad when my first Range Rover died, but at least it lived on in the many parts shifted out via the bay.
nigel bickle Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Bummer. i liked that car. Guess it comes to us all. Flog the alloys off -few other bits too
scooters Posted March 29, 2011 Author Posted March 29, 2011 yeah - the good news is that the 240 has a non interferance engine (why can't they all be like that!) and the Sherpa is a pushrod affair not sure what the 850 is though - modern(!) new fangled Volvers might well be different

KruJoe Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 That's a real shame.Where abouts are you? Maybe someone on the BX forum would like to have a go at it.
Shep Shepherd Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Poor car. If it is indeed beyond redemption, I hope that someone can make use of its good bits to keep other, better-favoured cars running.
dollywobbler Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 That's some full on arse biscuits right there. Gutted for you.
dieselnutjob Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 stick a turbo diesel in itwould be an easy swap
scooters Posted March 29, 2011 Author Posted March 29, 2011 stick a turbo diesel in itwould be an easy swap sadly no room to work, no money and no engine lifting kit!....the sum of all issues with this on top I hate to say it but this car will probably be better off living as parts of other BX Gtis
HereHareHere Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 I snapped the belt on my BX16V and very rashly decided to get the valve-bending catastrophe sorted. The worst £800 I ever spent. Never felt the same after, and almost instantly loads of other things started to go wrong.
mnde Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Mine has a big bill for over £1000 in the history file for repair following a snapped cambelt in the late 90s/early 00s. Citroen main dealer. I can't imagine the pain: at the top of the receipt it says something like "Investigate non start" So it doesn't sound as catastrophic as yours. But anyway, all new valves, HG, cam cover gasket, seals, stem seals etc. I'm worried now because when I had the cambelt replaced in 06, the garage didn't renew the tensioner because "it's fine"... Mark.
Guest Leonard Hatred Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 yeah - the good news is that the 240 has a non interferance engine (why can't they all be like that!) I don't think it's possible for multivalve DOHC engines to be non-interference.
Cavcraft Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 What a pisser, gutted for you. Can you not do the reverse of the norm and pilfer an engine from a 205GTi?
Angrydicky Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Agreed. Might I suggest rather than breaking maybe offering it for sale to a shiter who fancies putting a new engine in it? Would be a shame for an otherwise tidy and rare car to be scrapped - but the trouble is they aren't worth very much I suppose.

I don't think it's possible for multivalve DOHC engines to be non-interference. I could be wrong, but the engine fitted to the Mk1 & 2 Mazda MX5 (and 323 GTX?) has 16v and DOHC - And is non-interference.

Unless it lets go at 6000 rpm.... Personally, I've only ever had one cambelt go on a car I've owned, and that was on a Capri 2.0. Hardest part of the job was to get the crank pulley off, it had been there for close to 20 years as the belt had never been done. New belt on it and all was good again.

Just sighed to a stop in a layby that was fortunately a couple of hundred yards ahead.New belt on the following morning and it was back to normal. Commiseration on the death of the BX though. I was very disappointed when mine died while out on loan.
