I was expecting OMGBXFIASCO tale of woe,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,BXs are great cars, if I could find a mint one I'd snap it up.

what about a 46k 16trs auto - there's one on the BX forum just now !

Can't get much more mint without buying a pack of polos.

Yes, I'd say that rot is a fail. My A35 failed on that area, and it wasn't as bad! BUT it is a very easy area to repair, especially seeing as there are no complex curves or anything like that on the BX.

Another thouroughly enjoyable write up, hat doffed to you sir.

Regarding the 'mayonnaise' I'd be willing to bet it's down to (previuos) short journeys: I had a 405 1.9 petrol that did the same and even the dealers admitted they were notorious for it. They need a good run out at least once a week and really blow the cobwebs away and it does work too.

My mother's BX 16TZS suffered from mayo, too, most likely because she hardly drove it. It would largely disappear during the summer months, though.

Another great write up :) My BX 1.6 petrol is suffering from plenty of mayo under the filler cap at the moment too, even though it's in daily use and I'm driving to work on the A3, so it gets a good run. It does seem to get better in the summer though.

The BX filler cap is indeed a pain as I found out topping the oil up last night - it took ages to "persuade" it back on!

Looking good Scoots. That repair is pretty easy, nothing really to worry about there.

Glad its going well, way up there.

Good write up, as ever.

The mayo under the cap could be head gasket, or as others have said it might just be down to short runs. Does the water temperature get to normal in a short time? A stuck thermostat will keep the engine too cool which will make the condensation worse.

Can you do an Italian tune up on a French car? :D

The wheel arch rot seems to be a French thing.... my 604 has some there too.

Mmm my GSA went crusty there on the OS - the best solution, considering the other rust in the panel, was to have the entire rear wing replaced. Thankfully my BX doesn't have door shut grot, but it does have grot in the NS B pillar and sill which is a definite MOT phail I'm told. Needs to be sorted come the end of May.

all been fine since the K seal and 500 miles of high speed driving since without incident. I'd be surprised if it was a HG on the cylinder - there has been no power issues at all - suspect migling going on smewhere but the Kseal seems to have resolved this

That weld is no bother even for me. Should get it sorted easily. If you are passing Leeds in it at any point feel free to pop in and I can sort it out for you.

As the the others said, that mayo will be from short journeys, my dad's old Escort 1.3 used to do that, The oil emulsifies from not getting warm enough, IIRC my dad fixed his by changing to a better quality of oil.

I'm liking the BX love on here lately, I've drove a few of them many years ago whilst working on them and found them a much more pleasant drive then i was expecting, We often had them in back then for stone chipped bonnets to be paint, they we made from fiberglass and chipped easily.

they are indeed mostly plastic. bonnet, rear wingy bits, boot lid - this means that they weigh tap all so when you plonk in a 1.9 8 or 16V you get a hooligan- the 16v was one of the quickest Gtis of the period. I find them more practical than the 205 Gti because they don't threaten to kill you every 2 minutes - the 205 Gti is a great.....racing car....but the missus wouldn't let me take the kids in it!

Some of BX bonnets are metal - the blue diesel I had chance of this week was steel. Also, I hadn't noticed until I saw the two side by side that some come down further between the lights for different cooling requirements:
