My W124 E200 is up for sale, SOLD, anyone want a 300TD?

Sorry, I haven't been on here for the past few weeks but professional and family life have taken over most of my spare time.

I have bought a W124 300TD to replace my W124 E200, which is now up for sale. Please see add below for full details.

I've been asked by a couple of Autoshitters about this car before, hence this post.

Please form an orderly queue. I am sure you will agree that £500 for this car is peanuts.

I look forward to hearing from him!

To confirm, I bought the car (cheap) approx 6 months ago - there is a post about it if you do a search, from a lady who had to sell it asap due to parking issues in a very posh part of London. The car had an almost full MoT and had £259 spent on a full service a few weeks before, with proper (Kwik Fit) receipt to prove.

I've had a Mercedes specialist (Osbourne's of Maidenhead) look at it whilst replacing the front anti-roll bar bushes. They gave the car a clean bill of health.

The SRS warning lamp issue is, quite frankly, not an issue.

Aside from the suspension bushes, since buying the car I have spent money on the following:

Front bonnet badge.

New heavy duty battery, guaranteed for 3 years.

New thermostat.

New front pads.

Engine oil is still fresh, everything works as it should.

I am offering the car at a reduced price as the replacement (C-Class Mercedes) alloy wheels, in my opinion, do not suit the car, even though they have good tyres, two of which are new Good Years. I hope that the front (clear) indicators will fit my 300TD, so the car will be sold with orange indicators. Likewise, the stereo will be replaced with an inferior Sony head unit.

Whoever buys this car for £500 will get a bargain.

PS: SInce buying the car, I've over 5k trouble-free miles in it and until Monday, which is when I bought the 300TD, I've been using it daily.

Thats lush. I would love it but am brassic at the mo and need to get rid of some of the other crap I own. I am wanting to move up to a big barge soon as I dont really use my cars anymore as i ride my bike everywhere so might as well get something luxurious for gliding to Morrisons and back once a week.

Should not hang around long at that price.

feck - I'd love that but like HI am brassic at the moment as well!

good luck with the sale though - will fly out at that price!

This has the later 16V engine, with 136 BHP. Fast enough (for me) and will easily do 30MPG on a commute and high 30s on a gentle motorway run.

I like it!

Shame you're swapping the wheels though, if you weren't I would be shoving a monkey in your paw. :|

How do you find the 300TD?

How do you find the 300TD?

Another lucky Ebay find. I wasn't looking for another Merc and the E200 has served me well, but when the 300TD appeared on Ebay, I decided to take action.

The 300TD will only do about 10 MPG more than the E200 and considering that diesel costs more than petrol, financial savings will be small. But, a 6 pot diesel estate W124 is the pick of the bunch, so I figured I might as well have it.

Is it a multivalve one? I think they have the same power as a multivalve 200.

At least you have the option of running the 300TD on oily rags, tar, etc.

No, the post face-lift E300 diesel has the 24 valve head, whilst the pre-facelift 300TD has 2 valves per cylinder. Not that this bothers me, as speed and acceleration is low down on my requirement cryteria. That said, the 300TD doesn't feel much slower than the E200, despite the longer 0-60 time, of approx 4 secs (11 for the E200, 15 for the 300TD).

With a litre of diesel costing £138.9 at my local Esso, I might be looking at alternative fuels. I've checked, and the 300TD will happily run on veggie oil, chip fat, etc, without any mods or problems. Trouble is, my local Tesco sells a litre of veggie oil for £1.45 and I don't know any of the local fish 'n chip shop owners.

Bearing in mind that I've only had the 300TD for four days and I've been driving my W123 for two of them, it will be a while before I'm on first name terms with the new acquisition. Left overnight, it started first click of the key the following morning, despite almost sub zero overnight temperatures. It doesn't smoke at all and the straight six is smooth as silk. I was expecting rattles gallore.

Although the car was clean when I got it (from a company director who lives in Hampstead, London), I need to spend a couple of hours tomorrow morning giving the interior some Flash wipes loving. I hate the C-Class alloys, they don't suit the car for shit. Once I get over to London where the E200 is parked, they'll be the first thing I'll swap round. Sorry Pogweasel! I suspect that the C-Class alloys will look better on the E200, which looks a bit more modern (post-facelift) than the 300TD.

The 300TD has a decent spec, with cream leather seats, all electrics and an airbag. It's an automatic, which suits the lazy nature of the engine. When I'll get bored with it, in a few months knowing me, I suspect it will be an easy car to sell on. I got it with a full 12 months MoT and 7 months tax, so unless anything goes wrong with it, I shouldn't have to lose any money on it. Oh, it has 187k miles on the clock with FSH up to about 150k miles.

I like the 300TD but I will miss my E200, which has been a good friend to me for the past 5 months. The 300TD is my 9th Merc and the first diesel. Full report coming up towards the end of the weekend.

Car sold to a very nice chap who was more than pleased to hand over £500 in exchange for the keys.

Now it's time to sell the 300TD.

MoT: 12 months (until 16th March 2012)

Tax: 6 months (until end of September 2011)

Mileage: 182k miles with service history up to 145k

Spec: automatic gearbox, leather interior, airbag, electric windows x 4, electric mirrors, alloy wheels with four less than half worn Michelin tyres.

The car is in superb condition. I bought it from a wealthy company director who lives in a big house in Hampstead, London and loves his old Mercs.

The bodywork is in great condition with just one small rust blister on the underside of the nearside rear arch. Paint hasn't broken and it wouldn't take much to put this right. A bit of paint has rubbed off the rear bumper - see photo. There is a shallow dent on the tailgate - see photo.

Only three things need dealing with to make the car perfect. The rear wiper doesn't work. The (electric) sunroof is fully shut and does not open. I haven't investigated either of these faults. The tacho doesn't work. I have looked into this, apparently it needs a new crank sensor (which only provides signal for the tacho, nothing else).

Car drives sweet, engine starts first turn of the key, no smoke, no rattles, pulls well and does 40MPG. Gearbox changes gear smoothly. Brakes, suspension, steering are all good.

The interior is in great condition, only the front arm rest shows wear. The car has clearly had an easy life. I have the rear luggage cover, which was not fitted in the photographs.

Any takers at £1,500 before it goes on AutoTrader for more?

Thats nice but how vome you selling so quickly after buying it?, i thought you was planing on keeping it a few months at least.

bvgger me! that's lovely - if I was in the market for a family car just now I'd have that in a shot! good luck Pete and with these Mercs I am not sure if you qualify for the title 'shitter' anymore!

go and buy a BX or a Maestro to reafirm your credentials at once sir!

Upmarket shite, that's all!

The 300TD is sweet but it was an impulse buy. Why did I buy another W124 when I wanted a big 4x4?

Posted

Tis quite nice that. If I could find some lunatic for the Grand Cherokee, I'd be tempted.

Really? It must be impossible to find a big 4x4 these days.

c'mon Pete, you'll never get shot of that. Nobody wants a big 4x4 these days

You know what, I would be happy to give a nice BX diesel estate a home.

This is how the E200 looked before it was sold:

Those alloys don't look too bad on the E200. The indicators look poop though.

I wouldn't say that I regret selling the E200, but buying the 300TD, getting it clean, swapping the bits around, selling the E200, now selling the 300TD.... is all a bit of a pain in the arse if you ask me. The E200 was fantastically reliable and comfortable. It drove really well and did not need any repairs. Oh, and it had the most comfortable seats. However, I've been wanting a Disco for a while now, so at least selling the E200 has got me out of my comfort zone and will motivate me to find the right car for me.

Alternatives to a Disco?

I would consider another W124 (WTF?) but it must be a saloon with a manual gearbox and a non-metallic colour. Basically, my old E200 with a manual 'box.

A six pot E36 Touring, also with a manual gearbox would be good. Whilst a W124 saloon has a large enough boot for my needs, the E36 is a little bit too small, hence the estate idea.

Don't know, some other form of barge, with no more than 2.0 engine and manual gearbox.

Actually, I would love one of these:

2.0i Ghia with the 5 speed manual 'box, velour upholstery and original Ford ICE with separate amplifier. Drool.

Anyone got something suitable they want to swap?

Pete-M, your GC is a bit much for me.

I know!!!!

This would be pefect, but must be the TDi version:

I know someone with a Shogun V6, it's not that much thirstier than the extremely inefficient diesels.

My SWB 2.5 TDi Shogun, fitted with big off-road tyres, managed high 20s on a commute. Can the V6 do better than high teens?

Yeah, mid-20s on a run apparently.

so a LPG V6 would be cheap to run then?

Mk1 shotguns are superb tough shite I've had two and clocked 5000 mixed miles over 6 weeks during winter 09 and 10. I can vouch for the v6.economy wise it returned about 26 mpg on an easy run. The oil burner are terribly inefficient somewhat fragile and the mpg difference is negligible. The mark 1 also has the benefit of the superb earlier Mitsubishi v6 unit that is a tougher engine than the v6 in later models. Unrefined yes but this is a proper truck. Body work is usually great due to first class rustproofing. Chassis can rust. Interiors can suffer.

No shit, mine snapped clean in two just behind the steering box, not fun when negotiating on of the New Town's many roundabouts..

the first one I owned seemed to 'flex' a bit from a couple of the chassis/body mounts - body lean on corners whilst the chassis stayed flat!

the second one I had however has a pretty decent chassis. It's easy to forget to look at the chassis on these old buses especially as the bodywork is usually quite tidy!

Do love them though - the huge sunroof is GR8 4 TALIBAN RPG LAUNCHIN and it remains a popular car in the Hindu Kush
