Obscure Isle Of Man registration plate question

I have a car that has an alleged Isle Of Man number plate, it begins with CMN 000F. It was 'imported' a few years ago, and never used.

I have no idea whether this can be used as normal in England, or will I need to re-register the car. I haven't a clue about this, or whether IOM has a different registration system, so excuse my idiocy. :D

IoM is completely different and as far as I know, you can only use the plates on cars based on the Isle. Best IoM plate I've ever seen was on a Dyane when I was at school - W8 MAN! (they're sequence is sort of like the old UK one, but seriously messed up!)

Yeah, I've been reading up a bit, and it's all a bit wierd, maybe simpler, compared to the DVLA's method. I'm not really wanting to drive round on it's original plates, as it's not taxed or MOT'd etc., and just want to do the full transfer. I don't have the yellow log book thing, the previous owner just banged on cloned reg plates as he didn't want to pay transfer fees or go through the 'hassle', which is a bit silly. I can see this being a bit lengthy, but want to get everything legal and above board. I've printed the log book transfer to get the original IOM 'VL1' (like a V5 request thing) and then use it to transfer that to UK plates - I have original bill of sale and loads of documentation.

The web isn't teeming with info on this, especially the applying for IOM log book from the UK to transfer to UK reg plates!

Hrm, this looks more complex than applying for new ownership without the log book with the DVLA ... ?

I'd love to ring it, but finding a similar car is a bit difficult due to age, and cost of buying another car.

Didn't know IOM had no MOT system! 8)8)

I was in Liverpool City Centre earlier today when I heard something that sounded utterly gorgeous approaching in traffic, it was a Merc C63 AMG with the plate "NOT 510W"...

There have been a number of cars with Manx plates around here (nr Belfast) for quite a while now, taking the form of CMN xxx X and DMN xxx X. Perhaps the rules in NI are different re: re-registration etc. There was a Boxhead bird worked at the University of Ulster for about 3 years recently, and she drove her breavan Polo the whole time on Munich plates.

HOWEVER: When my Uncle's partner brought her Golf to NI, they managed to avoid various legal technicalities by taking the car out of the UK, once a year. Easy: drive over the border into R.o.I .at 23:55, and cross back into the UK at 00:05. Could you pretend to go to the Isle of Man once a year?

Just a thought.

Its been discussed on here before has that and unfortunately its not that easy. Otherwise we'd all be driving round on foreign plates. IIRC once the car has been here six months then it has to be registered here or leave the country for six months before returning.

The other thing is that what with ANPR its very easy to tell whether cars have been through a port in the last whenever. Especially so in the case of the IoM which is particularly hot on ANPR.

My friends parents live on the IoM, she lives hereabouts... goes to see them every couple of months for three or four days, so perpetually drives about in her manx-registered golf with zero plod / vosa interest.

Can anyone give me any guidance on this? I'm stuck - I definitely need it to be taxed, so can't drive it anyway.

Funk it, I'm going to go through the vin plate swap route. It's going to cost 150 quid alone for the certificate of conformity and unbelievable amount of paperwork to get this registered with those tits at the DVLA; Cert of C, SVA, MOT, evidence of purchase, evidence of port transfer, import duty, V55/5, etc etc etc,.

The 26 page guide book reads like one of those Fighting Fantasy 'choose your story' books. IF your car was built between 1992 and 1994, but wasn't built between july 1993 and august 1994, please turn to page 30.

I salute you, but is it wise discussing this on a public forum?

God knows, I've completely forgotten what I'm supposed to do now, but I will start the ball rolling by sending two forms off and 50 quid to the IOM post office. Don't know whether they'll allow an application for a new log book from the UK though.
