BMW 2002: O----[ ]----O vs. (=]___[ ]___[=)

This dispute has been going on for years between me and my mate! Round or Square?

I believe the Round Tail-lamps are better than the Square ones on the BMW 2002!

They were the “original intent†for that car and preserve its overall pure and symmetrical design much better than the Square (after-thought/facelift) lamps! Therefore I vote ROUND!... How about You?...

O---[ ]---O vs. (=]---[ ]---[=)

Round please.

Esp if teamed with grimy, faded petrol blue paint, battered tin number plates and one white door.

THE ULTIMATE SHITING MACHINE.

Round, who wants to be square?

Grimy faded petrol blue paint check, plates, er gone, fail, white door, er fail.

I can offer up a white bonnet and boot lid though?

I purchased a 2002Tii in 2006 for 500 quid with a completely rotten floor! They were very cheap not that long ago, but the prices have really took off. At the time I was bidding on a purple one with the bubble arches and a stripped out interior which went for 850 quid. I think they're much better looking than the mk1 Escort, I wonder what they're like to drive?

I prefer the square rear lights!

Neither will fit on a Hillman Hunter......

Oh you think so?... Well you haven't seen this then... :D

Remember that Persians LOVE BMWs, so they will do anything to own one!...

I think the round lights look more classic and they do seem to be more desirable to many 02 fanciers, But i still liked the look off mine, even if a bloke in a garage did once go into one and start slagging it off because it had square lights :evil:

I don't dislike the round lights but for me the square ones fit in with the styling of the car, they seem to suit the rear end much more. The front has round headlights i know but the rear looks more harmonious with the square lights to my eyes.

trig, i love your car! :D

Thanks OHV, Sadly i sold it last July, it was quite rusty under that shiny exterior, it needed bodywork like new wings, wheel arches and bottom of the doors plating as well as new seats and a few other bits so decided it was best to sell whilst it still looked good and had a long ticket, The new owner has now restored it and fitted alloys so I've heard.

The square lights seem to fit with the classic BMW styling philosophy of having round at th front and an angular back. Even the last of the nice nineties cars carried this on (sort of); mine has four round lights behind the glass and rectangular tail-lights.

Having said that though I still prefer the round units.

I never thought the '02 was a good looking car in any shape or form although the Turbo has a bit of 'tude. Just a bit ugly from some angles, bland from others. Certainly not a pretty car like the E9 CS Coupes or elegant like the E3, and the E21 3 Series is a more resolved design.

I Disagree. The 2002 theme has a "symmetrical design philosophy", therefore I think the round light goes much better with the car, additionally you can still see the roundness through the rear turn signal, cause they caried over the rear-fender!...

Is anyone else interested in this O----[ ]----O vs. (=]___[ ]___[=) discussion?!... ;)

When I had my P reg'd 1602 back in 1988 I bought another earlier one for spares (I needed a gearbox) it had a knackered engine but was only £30, when I went to collect it the only things he had taken off the car to keep were the round back lights! he was a DJ and planned on using them in his light box. 8)

Wasn't the addition of the square light because of the fog light?

I think they're both nice, but the Turbo had square, and it'd have your dad in a fight:

The 2002 is a Giovanni Michelotti design is it not? One of my all time favorite designers of cars. Does anyone know if he was responsible fvr the square light upgrade ? Those lights look like they might be his work.....very Daf B body

Personally I prefer these rear lights:

But then I've owned four, so I guess I'm biased.

Am I the only one who doesn't like the 2002? It looks slab sided and bland, but if pushed, a really early one with chrome hubcaps looks sort of alright. I prefer the four door NewClass 1600-1800 by a mile.

The Mark 1 Escort and HB Viva were both stunners compared to the 02.

Round lights for me. Similar the post above, when a mate scrapped a borked 2002 about 4 or 5 years ago, the only things that got saved were the owners handbook and the rear lights! Don't know if he ever used them, I had the handbook!

I think the round lights look better, but the rectangular lights fit better. Is that magnificent square light wearing machine behind, yours?

Same here; though I love the '02, the Neu Class are well, classier:

Mine was the Polo, there to put some wheels on the 02 as no faggot would pick it up without wheels.

The Jag was some guy who shared the land with the seller both had been given notice to quit by the owner hence the sale. :)

Most of Michelotti's designs of the time are slab sided - height of fashion don't ye know....mind you the 2002 was one of the few cars he did draw without the Herald 'eyebrows' - post Herald a lot of his tin looked a it...welll...Herald

Pretty sure the '02 has nothing to do with Giovanni. I may, of course, be massively wrong. He did the 700, but I'm pretty sure the '02 was an in-house design. I'm assuming it was Willhelm Hoffmeister or possibly Paul Bracq.

There were two in-house designers working under the direction of Hofmeister who penned the 1600-2 using Neu Klasse mechanicals and a shortened wheelbase. The lead designer's name was Georg Bertram. Michelotti, who is often given credit for the 1600-2 design (and therefore the 2002) had nothing to do with the series.

Paul Bracq designed the E21 3-series, the E12 5-series and the Turbo Car concept:

Bracq then went on to be Chief of interior design at Peugeot for the 305, 505, 205, 405, 106, 406 and 206.

The missing link to this timeline is the BMW 700, which is styled by Miichelotti, though that may be obvious. Notice it doesn't have 'the kink', just the merest hint of one. Without this car, BMW may well have gone bust or been gobbled up by Mercedes-Benz.

Hark the Herald influences, or is that the other way around..?

The front wings on the 700 are very similar to the daf 44....especially the profile of the headlights

Yes he did, and my guess is that he is not responsible for the Square lights, cause the Round ones are Better! ;)

Another pic to add to the 'Square v. Round' debate; of course the E21 has the best lights of the three: :roll:
