Spammers and spam threads

Right, I am sure this has been pointed out before, but I thought it would be best to bring it up again. Don't reply to spam posts!

The thing is, even if we have no interest whatsoever in the crap they are purveying, the point of their posts and threads is to create links all over the internet. The more links they put up, the more the creator of the spambot or the human spammer has done their job. Also, the higher the links are in the forum, the more notice it will get by the search engine crawlers. Any live link is a good link to the crawlers, either in a signature or post. Don't keep the spam threads up in the forum, the sooner they drop down the better. Deleting them would be best though, or stopping them in the first place....

Mods? Please sort this...

Agreed. Replying with "fuck off" will not deter a spambot!

Where's the fun in it? You aren't replying to a sentient being.

REEL FRED has a good point, I bet replying to the spam bots only encourages them... that and getting through the registration process.

Seconded. The current situation and the moderators' inaction is really getting my goat! :x

Mods, for the love of God, if you're not going to delete these spamming gits, at least let one or two of us have the privilege of doing it! FFS one has posted fifteen times now - fifteen times! That's more than some real members have ever posted.

I'd have to agree with the above, a couple more people with banning and deleting thread/posts rights would seem a good idea.

I think its been mentioned before but I think the sign up process could also do with being a bit stricter to stop these bots etc. before they start.

There's another one in now. Word will get round. You can take the piss out of me all you like, but at least I'm not adding to this crap. Time was I would have been happy to have taken on the Mods job, but I have been put off this forum and don't come on as much as I used to. It does need sorting though. If they don't get as far as being able to post, they will stop. I approve all of the members on my forum, and have had a grand total of one spammer get to post on the forum. The majority are dead easy to spot, most use certain email domains, so they can be deleted without investigation. I kept deleting them, and a couple of months ago they stopped signing up completely.

I have had a look through the members list at times and the amount of obvious spammer type members is scary.

maybe that needs attention ?

Surely the sign-up procedure needs fettling thats all, its clearly got 1990 levels of internet security on it at the moment. I don’t mind the occasional spammer, they add to the shite atmos, but the last couple of days the spammers have been winning the war i would say.

To be fair the moderators could be busy elsewhere and without them there probably wouldn't be an Autoshite. The problem needs sorting though asap, so hopefully one of them will be on soon and deal with it.

If that doesn't take the piss I don't know what does.

I think the two chiefs have been off on their French car adventure this weekend? For which we will salute them as heroes. But they do need to get this sorted out too.

Fair enough they are busy, but it's obvious people are not happy and if there was somebody else to delete spammers (or check they weren't getting in) this wouldn't happen.

it does indeed.

Mods to the front desk!

After we've been told of the French shite adventure ...

OH FFS! There's another one in now, and they are replying to each other's threads.

PLEASE NOBODY REPLY!

Add the bots to your foe list and things look kinda normal...

Posted

Good idea, but guests can't do that, and given there's usually about 15 guests on at any one time, the guests are the ones you want to encourage to sign up. Seeing a forum plastered with spam won't make them want to.

Oddly enough, I just did this prior to you posting it - it make a fair difference, as you say.

:lol: I think this one isn't a bot, but an actual human who is doing it to piss us off.

I think they're (mostly) bots.

Actually you could be right. Unless there's been some big leap in spambot programmes, they normally make a thread or loads of threads and piss off. This one is selectively adding posts all over the shop, not the normal spambot thing to do.

No, nI think it's still a bot, just a slightly more sophisticated one that posts in recent topics as well as making it's own threads. I noticed it seemed to get caught in a loop in the middle of last night - replying to it's own posts because it was the only one here.

Was the forum suddenly really slow for anybody else just now?

Forum speed is fine for me.

Incidently - Out of interest, I googled all that russian bollocks, this is what it said:
