It's Lord Sterlings fault!! He cross posted an ad for a Rover 800 from here onto rover800.info so i had a look and joined!!

Currently own and drive a Rover Sterling with the wonderful 2.7 Honda engine and auto box but looking for an older classic to play with too, something like a Chevette or Dolomite auto would be good. Want a real cheap one though to restore and build how i want it. As such it wouldn't be any good be getting a really nice original one or even one that had some bits i might like as it's something i want to do from scratch.

Cheers,

Dave

ps Mo - you know me better as scoobyh123 on rover800.info!

Hello you :)

Both the Chevette and Dolomite would make good small RWD projects, as would the Avenger and Sunbeam :)

Welcome to the shitehouse, any photos of your 827?

Id like a Dolly also one day (the car, not a sex toy, not yet anyway)

Oh hey Scoobs! Nice to see you on here. Seen your reply on the Rover forum.

Anyway, like everyone else says here, get some photos of your 827 up, I've only seen 1 pic so far!

Hello from a fellow Rover 800 Afflictee.

My journey into 825Si ownership is only just beginning, no doubt many tales of sacrifce, woe and tears lie ahead.

Welcome to the fringe, from a n00b to a n00b.

Thanks!! I do my best to keep it perfect in every way though you may notice the back box isn't quite standard (nor is the centre box - came from a tractor lol!) and i've changed the expansion tank (a known weak point on the 800) for a Volvo tank, which is nearly a straight swap. Also replaced the bulbs that light up the shift quadrant so instead of being red in every position they are now colour coded :

Got a few other little things up my sleeve to do yet though . . . . . . . . . . . . .

But first is to replace the rear shocks and balance the offside wheels (nasty shake from about 65-72mph)

That's a neat touch. Makes me wonder why Rover didn't make it like that originally ;)

Indeed. My CX had different colours for different selector positions. A great idea! When it actually worked...

Looks nice. I do love how successful that facelift was considering they were stuck with the same doors and roofline!

Thanks again! Rovers method of achieving red lights was to use "gnome condoms" over wire ended bulbs (aka "grain of wheat" bulbs) and as a couple of mine had blown and i wanted something different, i found hi-brightness, 12V LEDs on maplin.co.uk. The blue ones weren't available in 12V so had to use a series resistor but managed to do it very neatly so it didn't take any extra space.

Slight trimming with a file was needed to get the 5mm LEDs through the mounting holes on the shift quadrant but they are now fit and forget!

Welcome along. Buy a Chevette, they rocketh mightily.

Welcome Laird! Good luck finding a suitable project too.

That's the current plan as there seems to be more Chevettes available than Dolomites. I've had 3 Chevettes in the past, 2 saloons and one estate. I'm looking for a 2 door saloon as they handle better than the hatches IMHO and i don't really like hatchbacks of any description.

Got a few plans for mods/upgrades including possible tuning or engine swap ideas. Also plans for a half-digital dash but they need more work at the moment. Really want to find one in need of restoration so i can do it to my spec as it were.
