A quick Google search reveals KAY 453L was for sale with Regtransfers in 2009 for £1945! Hardly A1 is it?

Just perfect , I WANTS  , EY is an Anglesea reg IIRC.

Indeed the centre console has an ancient tax disc holder displaying the name/number of an old garage in Leicester.

Spooky  but great detective work. That car was meant to be yours - What garage was it?

Lovely Simca EL. I remember loads of those knocking about, when I was little; looking at the pic reminds me of the distinctive burbly engine note of them. Lovely old things!

Best of luck sorting out the fueling/carb issue. Cant be too difficult as others have said.

I'm very impressed, it's a winner and great that you can lead (the site) from the front as it were.

Posted

Glad you're liking it chaps.

Meanwhile I'm wondering, as the car was first registered on 14 May 1972 (K reg) why both the original and current plates are both L reg (Aug 72-July 73)?

Presuming it languished in the dealers for 3+ months before selling, but why would the first customer drive off the forecourt with an out of late number plate? I must be missing the point here.

Posted
Is it tax exempt?

No, but it will be next year Ect, Ect....

Posted

You used to see new reg. cars on forecourts ages before 1st August, presumably they were registered because they had a number allocated. Two and a half months is stretching it a bit though.

Posted

You're not supposed to be able to use a private plate newer than your car, though it does seem to happen now and again.

Ive had this before with L 1973 reg but 1972 manufactured cars, when you prove to dvla that the car was manufactured prior to jan 73 therefore making it eligible for historic tax the only way there system will let the car be taxed historic is for them to change the date of reg to the date of manufacture, the sytem will not give a historic taxation class to a vehicle with a reg date later than 31 12 1972.

I have a gt6 that was registered in april 73 but built late december 72, when i had the taxation class changed at dvla the v5 came back from dvla showing first date of reg as december 72.

You should find somewhere in the simca paperwork that it will show the original first reg date as sometime in 1973 ,if the original service book is still with it that should show original date of reg along with the first keepers details.

Yup.

Got my forecourt thought the wrong wway round there, yes they would want to drive off on the newest plate despite it being older.

I found out tonight whilst showing my dad photos of your Simca, that he bought one new back in the early 70's, it was the only new car he's ever bought and was about £800, he said it was bright Orange.

He also said it was shite so he quickly sold it again.

What a beautiful car car, I love Simcas. Coupe version of that is very pretty too.

I remember a similarly coloured 1000 in Kensal Green London about 10 years ago, wonder if that is still going strong. There's also a chap in a very local garage to me who is a mad Simca fan - he's got a green 1000 and a very nice burgundy 1300.

Have you seen this pic of it on Flickr? Think it was taken at a French car show.

I was flicking though Classics Monthly in Sainsburys yesterday and spotted that theres a rear engined cars group test in there featuring a Simca 1000 on a E plate.

^^And that folks, is the essential difference between lathering up over a Simca and having owned one (much less restored one, as with yours truly, goodness sake wtf didn't anyone stop me...)

You know they say every true petrolhead should own an Alfa at least once in their life, well maybe in shite classic car circles it should be a Simca. I know one other person on here who's been bitten terribly by this bug and now has tunnel vision in obtaining one, more on this in due course…..

That's the one Trigger also found on Flikr Carlo, she doesn’t look quite as shiny now as then though, but what a picture.

Been having convo's with a couple of real Simca 1000 pervs this week who have been very helpful with offering advice on what to do with the fuel issue. Probably now amassed every conceivable variation of what the problem could be and how to go about fixing it. I'll run it all past the seller in due course to see if he's already done any of these things, but the two main areas of thought are 1. using a foot pump to clear out the fuel lines, and 2) clear out the carb, seeing as most other jobs appear to have already been done. Determined not to throw the towel in and get a garage to do anything, mainly because it sounds like I'll be living with these issues for quite some time so best learn now.

Won't be for another fortnight yet so am having to make do with these photos for now, but absence makes the heart etc etc….

Meanwhile as small consolation the Audi 100 is driving like it come off the production line. Seems to really like the cold weather. All the gears are back and in perfect working order, always starts first time even in -2 degrees, no rattles or knocks, she's just great!

So why on God's earth am I late-night bidding on a '77 Opel Ascona, cant even blame booze for that, being on a successful January full-detox…..

Old cars are the biggest addiction of the lot!

Posted

All gears in the Audi? That's a rare luxury! did you manage to replace the missing rubber gromit thingy then?

Posted

Yes, with the kind help of a passer-by the time it broke down in Leicester a while back. The good Samaritan, an ex Audi mechanic, fabricated one out of some no-more-nails glue like substance we grabbed from b&q. At the time it didn't set properly overnight so was still missing gears but good enough to get back down south with.

But since then the cold winter has hardened this gloop to the point it's now a perfect consistency i.e. quite stiff, you can change gear with 1 finger. Plus, car now has reverse as well! Posh as fook.

Been in a garage for a long time getting fixed up. Not without faults though, a very spluttery first day, mainly due to running out of petrol so a fair bit of dirt had to be shifted through the system.

Another breakdown and another photshoot opportunity! Only a leaky radiator, nothing serious although she does a good impression of a kettle if you thrash her. That'll get fixed easily with some of that stuff you can add to plug up the hole.

Shame the ignition key snapped off in the barrel yesterday. A screwdriver comes to the rescue for that. So never mind, time for a pint of Tiger in a country pub.

Gearbox is getting tricky too, so some fluid should sort that little issue out.

Wasn't confident enough to drive her from Leicester to London on this day, so just relied on Mr HS's impeccalbe 1100 Break for that (cheers HS for the 6 hour round trip, never a chore though in a Simca eh?!).

Some minor fettling and she'll be great for the summer. Roll on the next Autoshite gathering. Definitely Harpenden as well.

Splendid. Really like the look of that even though it does sound like it has 'character'

Posted

Yes she is a bit high maintenance but I'll iron that out of the little minx in due course. At least the fuel starvation issue seems to be put to bed, so she's over her bulemia spell for now.
