Yes it was a popular modification after 1958. People are always wanting the latest look. It also happened to some Split Rear window Corvettes in 1964. When the Mk2 Mini Cooper came out a lot of people changed the grille and rear lights, and painted the interior black so their Mk1 cars would have the new look.
