In modern parlance a house of multiple occupancy. In those days just divided up into flats.

An HMO is different from flats. I watched Homes Under the Hammer many times and an HMO (in a university town , ie almost everywhere these days), is a licence to print money by cramming 10 people into a building and charging £100 per week each. £100 x 10x 52 = £52000.

If you make said building into 3 flats, you get £700 per month,

£700 x 3 x 12 = £25200.
