When did the UK switch from imperial to metric fuel pricing?

During the 80's if I recall.

Wholesale changed in 1976

Retail changed in the mid 1980s when the cost per gallon approached £2,

(the most that the majority of petrol pumps of the time could cope with),

the Retailers successfully lobbied to be allowed to sell in litres and so not have to replace their pumps.

Though they could still sell in gallons if they wanted to, until 1995 when the Imperial Gallon creased to be a "primary unit" of measure.

I think there was also a psychological barrier at £2 which hastened the change

I think you’re right I remember paying £189.9 per gallon around about 1984/85. I don’t remember over £2 except in the far north of Scotland in the early 80s.

I think it was 1985 (maybe '84) when I was working at a Shell station on the A21 between Tonbridge and Pembury. I think 2* was 39.5p per litre, 3* was 41.5 and 4* was 43.5. 43.5 is a couple of pence under the £2 mark. We still had old Tokheim pumps with mechanical digits that dispensed in gallons, and one was a blender to get the 3* by mixing from the 2* and 4* tanks. I remember calculating in my head that 44p per litre was the £2 per gallon mark.

We also gave away these stickers for people to stick in their cars.

I still remember that 9.1litres is 2 gallons and still calculate how many gallons I get for my £20 fills ups these days. It's just over 3 gallons which gets me 100 miles on the fuel range meter in my Focus.

I could only find it on Facebook. But no direct link as to when.

I hovered my mouse over the right hand corner of the picture and did a visual search and the direct link came up in the results. MS Edge.
