Tennessee Shite: 5 October 2026 Update!

32,101 · January 3, 2011

Sorry Captain, I did it in a pristine rented Suburban. To make things worse, it was silver! But yes, you're right, Galaxie (and indeed Gran Torino) would be perfect for that trip. One day I'd love to rent some old shite like these in a Southern State, for a few days of elbow-hanging.

I have a friend in San Diego who writes his emails in a similar manner, it can take me half an hour to read one. I think his excuse is the contents of his bloodstream during his 30s, but I do prefer something resembling words...

Top thread, Mr O'People, keep 'em coming. The big 70s clunkers really do it for me.

I did a few months' work in the Carolinas a couple of years back and spent all my spare time rolling around the backwoods spotting shite like that (sadly no pix - lost them all in a hard drive crash ).

Spotted this super top-secret Jet powered Ford LTD. Sadly, this concept was never put into production.

GR12!!

that Checker is badass, I like the ones with the thick C-pillars, although I'm not too sure about the portholes on that example! I wish I could remember enough to know why some of them had less windows than others.. but I don't. Anyone?

Looks like the Checker Marathon with the c - pillars filled in were intended for private buyers. Google images shows one with a porthole has being a 1982 model, one of the last.

Good pics, like the fact that there is a Fifth Third bank in Tennessee!

But was that 1966 Ford badged as a Fairlane?

It looks like a full size Galaxie or LTD, the Fairlane was a different sized car at that time, like a Chevy Chevelle or Olds Cutlass, not a full-on land yacht!

18,790 · February 3, 2011

Yup I think that's a '66 Galaxie, not sure if LTDs ever came as 'verts. 1965 Galaxie 500 sedan in black is my dream yankshite

38,893 · February 4, 2011

So many American saloon and Coupe cars of the late 60's and early 70's had wonderfully 'busy' front and rear light designs!

2.1k · February 4, 2011

sorry for the ot post but was that you iain i passed going to mo's shop yesterday?

February 4, 2011

Great pics - loving that halfarsed rope/chain affair to stop the local drunks walking off with the electric car.

38,893 · February 5, 2011

sorry for the ot post but was that you iain i passed going to mo's shop yesterday?

Is that the shop on Taymouth Road?

If so it wouldnt have been me as I havent used that wee shop yet, even though most folk in my street do. Its just a short cut through the trees from me too lol!

Saw your Doblo parked on Gilston Crescent during the snow though, when the side streets were totally impassable. The Tipo's wheels live on!

1,898 · February 16, 2011

Not shite but worth posting anyway. The noise it made pulling away was EPIC!!!

This "wood" on the outside looks as convincing as the plasti-metal on the inside.

Amazing to suddenly realise cars that were once common as dirt can now be considered rarities. It's been years since I've seen a Chevrolet Celebrity wagon outside of a scrapyard. Looks in remarkably original condition, too!

.

Same goes for the grandma-spec Chrysler Fifth Avenue. You just don't see these anymore.

Some recent Shite spots for your entertainment......

Classic VW Beetle.

Damn, I haven't seen a Ford Maverick in many a year! Jacked-up ride height and aftermarket wheels do little to improve it.

The Maverick owner also has this Dodge Dart. Looks like a rolling restoration project.

Not shite, but this 911 Turbo looked manacing!

.

Chevrolet Lumina APV. I havent seen one of GM's early '90s plastic-bodied "Dustbuster" people carriers in ages!

Another classic beetle spotted as the owner was driving away.

.

Bad pic of a very good car. Ford Focus SVT, the American version of the Focus ST.

Whale-tail 911. The '80s are back!

Cheers,

Madman of the People

That German-registered Volvo 740 parked next to the black Porsche made me raise an eyebrow

1,898 · March 11, 2011

Chevrolet Lumina APV. I havent seen one of GM's early '90s plastic-bodied "Dustbuster" people carriers in ages!

Is this the Cadillac of minivans?

No, but the nearly identical Oldsmobile Silhouette was indeed the "Cadillac of Minivans"!

1,639 · March 11, 2011

I would love to own such an original Chevrolet Celebrity Wagon! Very cool looking car!

38,893 · March 12, 2011

I remember being in one of these in Canada with non functioning wipers, driving through a rianstorm

My Canadian cousin(father-in-law of Van owner) used to have the sedan Lumina in V6 form. I remember I got a shot of it

32,101 · March 13, 2011

Now just guess who else round here had a Lumina sedan with the 3.1V6...?

And it was Canadian! It still carried the dealer badge from Kincardine, Ontario. Bloody lovely thing to drive too, apart from being FWD. I had business-use on the insurance, so when I was working in a care house that didn't have a car, I could take the service-users where they needed to be. In style and comfort!

9,794 · March 13, 2011

Goodness me. We had a Lumina 3.1 Euro as a hirecar in FLA, 1993. (NEP81J on the license plate, I really shouldn't remember that) 140hp and four-on-the-tree but unbelievably smooth and made a nice noise.

Also had a craptastic velour interior that was redder than the depths of hell.
