Audi S3 What do we think?

You'd be forever telling people you've got an Audi ESSSS 3. No, it's not an A3, it's an S3, quattro and everyfink

A friend has an S6 which is pretty speedy in a quiet way and he had a TT when they came out, but servicing costs from the Audi dealer is taking the piss for what's basically a posh Golf.

A mate's wife had an S3. VERY hard seats, Bastard quick (225 I think), but not without its problems, chiefly the ABS, cost a lot to get fixed, after much head-scratching on my part. SRS light forever coming on (loose connection under seat), some instrument issues. Very nice motor, though, a real Scooby-eater.

I don't like the Halfords spec clip on chrome door mirrors much but other then that i think they are a nice car.

Looks like the sort of thing which turns right on a roundabout without indicating and makes me shout abuse.

They are German, and therefore infallible

Seriously though, I had no idea that the Audi S3 was even a car before I clicked on this topic. Although the 'Audi' bit was a slight giveaway.

Sorry, that wasn't in the least bit helpful was it?

Bought and sold one a couple of years ago. (And it cost me less than the one in the pic, with less mileage and F.s.h...)

I didn't rate it at all. Not massively quick, abysmal ride, fair bit of transmission shunt when giving it proper beans, numb steering, over servoed brakes and all the other usual VW 'fast Golf' problems. I generally didn't like it. It did grip very well, but it wasn't much fun to drive. It was like I imagine it would be playing Gran Turismo sitting in a shopping trolley going down a cobbled hill.

I suppose it would be ok if you've not driven a nippy car before, but to me it felt like whoever is responsible for Vectra suspension had thrown a load of go-faster bits at a MkIV Golf in their spare time. Nice trim, but the fabled "Audi bank-vault build quality" always seems to end up in the bottom of the glove box on these. Any plastics that aren't soft-touch are likely to have fallen off or been broken by now. If they're still intact it'll have engine / gearbox / diff problems. Electrically, they're shite.

I would quite happily drive one of these, probably in an aggressive manner, cutting up dullards in old beige cars who get in my way.

Boot is too small though. Can't get my work stuff in one.

Cheers chaps, all good stuff.

My mate, thogh is not a shiter per se, although his previous steed was a 205Gti 1.9 in Miami Blue, one of the last, so he's used to having a bit of poke underfoot.

Obviously the Audi will be more solidly built, but so will a paper bag.

I'll post a link to this thread to him, and he can read your pearld of wisdom for himself. You never know, he might even join up!

Keep the opinions coming, thanks boys.

putting my personal feelings about modern Audis aside....

my best mate had one - very quick but not the most robust car and a badge premium vs the Gowf -

his was in and out the garage all the time with ABS issues

peronally I'd steer clear

oh.......and it's not a 205 Gti is it .....ALL hot hatches after the 205 feel like they are lardasses....mind you no one wouldbe insane enough to buid a 205Gti these days ....or allowed to!

For those who can't afford a big Audi and are snobbish enough to believe Golfs are the greatest car of ever, it's probably ideal. I would imagine the usual clientelle are people who live in a three foot square 'apartment' in a rat infested canal side warehouse, wear 'funky' ties, sell mobile phones for a living, go out drinking and talking loudly about how many birds they have and then go home alone to wank over freeview fantasy channels.

Citroen Visa GTi

Peugeot 106 (Series 1) Rallye

Citroen AX GT

Is it a coincidence that they’re not much later than a 205, and they’re all French?

LOL

Allegro VDP FTW.

Diverter valves are made from chocolate, abs problems are usually nothing to do with the actual abs, but are caused by duff connections. Ride is a bit firm, especially on deft AM wheels and rubber band tyres.
