Kenneth_Bo11ox's NEC observations

Alright shiters

We've already sen a fair few snaps from the NEC so i'll keep it brief, just though i'd share some of the KWAZL gear I found when i was wandering round, camera in one hand, pint of boddys in the other.

TR7 2.0 injection from the factory, nice one!!! I wonder how smooth this runs, it seems to be a semi-electronic system with a Bosch-style (Lucas-made, probably) flap-type airflow meter. I bet you can do better nowadays with a laptop and a megasquirt ECU, farting about at home than was achievable at the factory in 1980 or whenever it was.

P1020269.jpg

P1020270.jpg

That 'SPL' crew had a mini estate shell that was 'one side rusty, one side cleaned up by us'. It was two halves, welded together. The cleaned up side had some of the worst welding i've ever seen, although I suspect over the years many Minis have been 'restored' to this dismal standard by naively enthusiastic father/teenager combos. I'd love to know the story of how it ended up being their demo car.

P1020286.jpg

Not alot to say about this except how class it is.

P1020293.jpg

"wait a minute - wheres mi jumpaaaah" (remember that)?

P1020280.jpg

I know its scene and all that but its impossible not to admire the work that goes into some of these old VW's, this one is a work of art man. i would have it on a plinth in my front room any day of the week.

P1020274.jpg

We've already seen this astonishing mini engine which was my 'star of the show'

P1020264.jpg

P1020296.jpg

Here's the mini-club 'chill out zone' where you can relax, drink plenty of water and get your head straight before going back out for a bit more discussion of radius arm bearing replaceemnts and so on.

P1020297.jpg

This thing is class, looks like its come straight out of a John Steinbeck story.

P1020309.jpg

The full range of apparel for the discerning MGB-driving 'chap'. Ask about our extansive range of string-backed gloves and old AA roadmaps.

P1020313.jpg

Just thought I would snap this feller, snapping his Mrs who was checking out the new Bentley Mulsanne. It appeared to meet her requirements.

P1020312.jpg

This Rolls-Royce V8 engine had been developed to use fuel injection, along with some bespoke cylinder heads, to basically get the same oomph out of a smaller engine. Porsche were consultant engineers on the project. That probably explains why it looks so much like a 928 unit!

P1020321.jpg

Get a load of this guy, what do you think he's photographing? I cant work it out.

P1020325.jpg

'yes Geoff, the Lotus 907 mas a much maligned unit, its actually very reliable as long as you tighten up every nut and bolt every 500 miles and budget £5k for a rebuild at 50k, and you've got to remember these are specialist cars so they do need maintenance, theyre not a Golf TDi or something, i've never had any trouble with the engine in my Jensen Healey in 20 years so that shows it can be done' 'Hasn't your jensen been off the road since 1993 Ted?' 'yes, but thats not the point geoff, the engine is still good' etc etc.

P1020326.jpg

Check out this sly old silver-tongued devil, those Maserati overalls clearly can 'open doors' so to speak.

P1020328.jpg

P1020329.jpg

This Chassis was on the Chesil Speedster stand, its preetty interesting, a sort of sandwich of aluminium top and bottom layer with some sort of cellular plastic inbetween. I'd love to know how they tested it and how it compares to a VW tub for stiffness etc. I'm sure its great, cant help thinking 'Ikea' though when looking at it.

P1020305.jpg

business as usual on the Morris club stand - reliving those wartime memories, ration books, Vera Lynn songs and so on. But hang on - wht the blazes is going on over there?

P1020306.jpg

They don't look like club members to me. Someone ask them for some ID!

P1020308.jpg

(Chorus of 100+ bloke's voices) "Don't worry, i've caught em on camera, they won't get away with this!"

P1020349.jpg

What an ace delivery van this is, i'm imagining some sort of well-spoken 1930's 'white van man' caning it through red lights etc in a top hat.

P1020352.jpg

this eye-popping horror is a purpose-designed wedding car. Its based on a London taxi for reasons of refinement and engineering finesse.

"So what wheel have you put on yours?"

"Minilites"

"Wow, me too!"

Posted

"Roffles" etc.

Perhaps that Mini shell was brought to SPL on the basis they'd strip it for £500 or whatever and six months later it was still sat outside with promises they'd get it sorted for £4k. Allegedly.

You have clearly missed "Marina" standing just out of shot to the left in your photo of the bloke with the show-rod.

That Chesil chassis looks very interesting. I am lead to believe that mounting the top of the shock on the same axis as the top wishbone mount is not good geometry though.

The Morris stand. You couldn't make it up!

Excellent WURK.

Oh and Reg Holdsworth appears to have tiny stumps for feet as well as Maser overalls. How strange.

I'm worried that the first thing i though when i saw this photo being that i hope her heels don't go through the seat cover.

Mind you blondie has a nice bum and the one in the boots has nice legs... (Saying that's made me feel manly again)

This shot is the best.

P1020305.jpg

The lady on the right writing a letter on behalf of the glasses-wearing bloke for the club newsletter. It's basically a rant where he claims to be very disappointed with some members of the club for taking what he considers to be the best items from the Quality Street tin (fondant-based, green triangles, etc.) and only leaving him with what he feels are the worst (toffee pennies) and considering that he was hoping to use the tin for a few more months, Christmas is now going to be a bit of a rum deal for his family.

Bonus: The bloke on the far left is bragging to his mate about stealing these bags off another member who had set them down on the floor whilst he had a quick slash. There's not much of value in them, he just did it for the thrill.

Looks like someone heard, take those off luv.

Guy in the white shirt isn't even pretending to take pictures...

Me too..... which probably explains why we are looking at old cars on the internet at 12.30 on a saturday night rather than getting pissed/ having sex with women/ saving the world

C'est la vie!

What are you on about? I'm doing all of those things whilst I'm sat here.

Is the engine bay of that white Golf smoothed over or something?

Looks really neat, much better than the manufacturer's idea of a monster plastic cover over everything

When they owned Jaguar/Daimler, Ford really did miss their chance for a special-edition Transit... 8)

They cut the scuttle tray off by the looks of it and smoothed the inner wings, the wiring is probably stuffed inside the chassis legs.

Bet that old bloke in the blue Adidas top couldn't wait to nip to the bogs for a quick lamb shank after seeing those 'orange' specimens.

"...but eight of them will leave with nothing, as one by one they are voted off as The Weakest Link!"

Yes, I do. Saw them in Amsterdam when they got back together (2008 or 9), and slept at the drummers flat in Stockholm a few times...

Great pics & words Bollox!

Not a million miles away from the XJ220 parts we manufactured at our place back in the early 90's - I was the production planner for the project.

Ally honeycomb sandwich panels formed the floor, dash, seat backs etc

It looks like the chassis from a radio controlled car of 20 years ago. Wonder where you plug the 7.2V battery in?

There's a company doing something similar with electric cars; they offer a chassis like that but with batteries sandwiched between the 2 layers, so you can put your own bodyshell on. 10 Shite Points for anyone that phones up to ask if the wheelbase and track is similar to an Austin 1800 :D

Looks about right for a 1971 Vauxhall Viva HC to me....

Is it me or is that TR7 running individual throttle bodies? to be fair I've been admiring that bird's arse for much longer than is healthy so my eyesight might be a bit fuzzy
