Cosford? Bloody 'ell, why dont I know about these events (Might have something to do with me living like a hermit)

Got big love for the Red 216 in this pic:

Picture011-1.jpg

My mate had an identical one (G???GOM) back around the early 00's. Probably long gone by now but if I was to have one, it would have to be identical to that one. I also saw this car at GAYdon when they showed up along with the 800 group. I've only ever driven one of these, wasnt in a very good condition thats probably long gone too.

Cheers for putting these up Matt.

Bet the AA and RAC were rushed off their feet today  . No that looks a good turn out to celibrate Rovers 8) .

My boss still swears by these things, he's currently got 3 400 Tourers on the go from what I recall, all Nightfire Red...? I quite liked my little 414, would have another in a minute.

Jeez, that is one set of cars I just can't get excited about. :?

Therefore I'm not yet a true autoshiter. :(

Hey, nice work. As everyone no doubt knows, I proper love my R8 Rover, in fact I have been down the workshop today actually, giving it a guitar serenade and pissing about changing the engine.

A Rover 420 GSi Touring is where it's at i think, with the small hump on the bonnet and 1/2 leather seats, I couldn't think of a much better 200/400 model to buy.

best keep these cars locked up because more and more are being used for Banger racing, especially the honda engined ones.

Shit! Mines a Honda 216. Best keep an eye on it then/weld it to the road/give up to the inevitable opening of the curtains one morning to find a 216sli shaped space outside.

I didn't like my Honda-engined 416SLi, very little low-mid range torque and poor fuel consumption.

Posted

Yup, that's about sums them up really. Rather have the 214/414 and risk the head gasket woes. For all it's faults (well one) it was the better engine of the two smaller capacities.

A friend,of a friend etc who told me about these being usefull on the banger track, also said that ,rover/honda should ov fitted them with the Twin carbs off early civics has standard, because they go like stink, when fitted.

Posted

I don't get that bad economy out of mine, to be honest. The twin-cam engined one gets about 32-34 mpg regardless of how it's driven (and it get's driven properly...) and the single cam automatic with a roofbox averaged 29 mpg, 3-up, all the way from Lands End to John O'Groats earlier in the year.

But you're right, they are a bit gutless below 3000 rpm. But keep the revs up and they go very well.

Didn't know the banger boys were keen on them though. I may have to start locking it...

Agreed. Or the uber rare 420 Gsi Turbo Executive (sans spoiler)

I don't get excited about Honvers either. The two SD1s are nice though. The blue A plate Vitesse is pretty well known.

The P4 looks rather clean as well. I wonder if there were any ZT-T V8s there, in my eyes they're the only good "Rover" built after the SD1.

The 420 Turbo isn't all it's hyped up to be, I've only driven one once for about 20 miles but although it went like shit of a stick it suffered with some of the worse torque steer I've ever experenced (other then a Clio 16v once).

I have to agree with not being a fan of the 200/400 range though, They aren't the most enjoyable cars I have driven, Even the later MG'sa don't excite me much, I did test drive a ZT CDTi a few years ago with was quite nice but didn't feel at all special to me.

Although I can hardly get into BoIIox-like states of ecstasy about these old things, it's nice to see that there are some out there being cared for. I've always liked the styling fo the estate versions too, although I think i've only seen about 3 in my whole life.

I test drove one once - I agree about the torque steer (it was supposed to have a fancy diff on the front but it didn't seem to do very much good) but I have to say I was rather underwhelmed by the performance - it didn't feel any quicker than the 2-litre 9000 Turbo I was running at the time, and I was expecting more from 200 brake in such a small car.

Shame, I really like the idea of the 420 Turbo.

I've driven a lot of mainstream '90s cars and I'd say R8 Rovers are among the nicest to drive.

420 Turbos look fantastic..

other then a Clio 16v once

Was there something wrong with it? I've never really read anything about torque steer on a 16v or Williams.

I would like a turbo diesel estate one (can you get them?), be a good old workhorse I reckon. My wife has a bubble shape 220 diesel and its a GR8 little car

By a strange coincidence, I was at Cosford photographing this:

and I spotted that the Rover event was on - someone from the Rover do snapped the MGB on the way out too.
