Front end looks a bit odd.

Kit car based on a TR7?

Volvo 480 front lamps and a moulded bumper extension..... Not exactly cutting edge like.

I would guess that it is a Grinnall TR7.

Like Alpina to BMW, where it's technically 90% oem with 10% tweaks an an individual badge.

It is categorically horrible though,

Volvo 480 lights at the front??

When it's a TR8?

ps, are those volvo 480ES indicators? wedge-tastic, mate!

well its a 4 litre, so its pretending to be a tr8, but if i slap a v10 into a landrover, it doesnt become a viper does it?

and those ovlov lights just make it look a little dutton-ish IMO (i.e. parts bin special)

That's quite a job. They've taken the swage lines out the sides and completely remodelled the front & rear ends. I like the front but the bootlid could be a better fit.

And if the TR7 had stayed in production as long as the MGB..........

One of the last Grinnall TR7s - still makes it a TR though. Prefer the earlier ones myself (used to work down the lane from Mr G - used to see loads dotting about)

The replacement/development of the TR7 was due in 1983 and was called Project Broadside:

The Montego-style sides and Rover SD style light units were planned to be used and at least two prototypes were built. Unfortunately, the strength of the pound at the time meant exports to the US were drastically reduced so the future of the TR7 was put in doubt. Eventually , Solihull factory was closed as a cost cutting exercise and TR7 production stopped.

There was also going to be an MG badged version to replace the MGB, called 'The Boxer'. It was basically a TR7 but with a grille and round headlights and the same Rover SD lights at the rear. I can't find any pics on the net..but it looked kind of cute. Supposedly, five prototypes were built and a launch date of late 1980 was mooted. The idea was shelved due to massive losses (£390m) during the year.

BL was just f**ked , really.

BL was just f**ked , really.

From the beginning, and it only got worse when they got Honda involved.

Shame really, if they had had the sense to properly split Jaguar / Rover / Triumph away from the Austin-Morris / MG disaster area in the '70s instead of just appointing a few ill-equipped dealers for JRT stuff they could have sorted a lot of the problems out.

Jaguar / Rover / Triumph were still (badly) making good cars for most of the '70s. It was the 'mainstream' shite that killed BL, along with the Labour government's management and trade union interference.

This ignores two salient points.

1) For half the decade, the party in government was the Conservatives.

2) BL management couldn't organise their way out of a wet paper bag.

As you were.

Oh, ok then. Labour (Tony Benn) created BL in 1968, had destroyed most of the UK car industry by 1970 and then tried again to finish it from 74-79.
