nobody mentioned the PRV yet?

A true great engine, always bashed as rough and not refined, but in fact extremely reliable and fun to drive.

it was propably fitted into more different cars than any other engine,

It was even used in an airplane http://www.pictaero.com/fr/pictures/picture,67522 a tank

https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/ERC-90_Sagaie and still holds the Le Mans speed record at 405 km/h

Also, the 8v 2litre OHC engine from a MK2 Cavalier SRi130. Nice spread of useable torque.

2.0SEH.  I don't have a great history with that engine. The first experience involved a mk2 cavalier CalibrE that flashed it's oil warning light as soon as the oil got hot, replaced with a low mileage SEH from a mk3 cavalier Sri, which threw a rod through the starter motor.

Strangely the 1.8E 8V in the mk2 cav CDi and Early Mk2 Cav Sri I owned were brilliant. Same engine as in the mk1 Astra GTE.

" we've found out what's wrong with your car sir . It's your starter motor, the con rod has gone through it !"

Honda CX 500 engine, odd looking but grunty and good fun.

Triumph 1296cc OHV, a lovely, willing little thing. Simple, reliable and a pleasant thing to work on if need be.

I phoned the RAC.  told them I'd need a low loader, due to a) The engine having a hole in it, and the starter motor being in bits all over the Runcorn Widnes Mersey Bridge, and B) The car being very low and having nowhere to attach a tow hook.

So they put it down as Failure of starter motor, and sent a bloke with a van, who then sent for a bloke with a lowloader.

I've had that on a few occasions, suspension collapsed on Merc, do not drive - cue the tow truck after requesting a low loader, and prop shaft / rear axle on Ginetta same again
