Picked this up yesterday! It's a joint purchase between me and a mate. Guess which one's me...

It's a S40 T4 - quite the quickest car I've ever owned by some margin. Plan is to go for a blezz around the Nuerburgring next month. Then I'll probably have to appease the wife by chopping it in for a camper (shite, of course) for next year's hols.

It's got 112K on the the clock and drives really nicely. £895 from a local 'geezer' through ebay... Well bought? Let the Shiters decide...

Hey, I quite like that!, It's the nice shade of blue that i like and those alloys look pretty smart as well, Nice purchase!.

I'm guessing that it's a T4, what BHP do they kick out?.

Oh and are you the bald one on the right?.

Enough to turn Laguna gearboxes to cheese. They do go well though.

Please don't say that. Especially since my wife's now complaining her car smells of burning clutch.

Power is a conveniently round 200bhp. I may not have my licence much longer.

Well done that man! Mines sa '99 V too.

yes they are bloody quick, and you'll need to adopt a new driving style to get the best out of it, the traction control and rev limiter are a bit heavy-handed, and as a result, you'll need to be careful at the traffic light grand prix.

£900=bargain!

Here's mine, Devon 2009, grubby - and n/s/r door not closed!

I've taken the badges off the back.... [/img]

"Real Volvos" are called 240 and 740...

Who cares how "real" they are...

S/V40R is

(a) Fucking Quick

(B) good looking

© obscenely cheap

(d) still got a Volvo badge on so acceptable in any social situation.

They are SO on my radar at the moment. A V40R is very likely to be my next ride for daily duties.

I had a '97 S40, 2.0 Special, it's the only modern car that I actually got on with

It's a Mitsubishi Carisma with a Laguna engine and box, turbocharged by Volvo, and built in Holland.

It's surprising how well they turned out, and later ones (and I'm pretty sure those two are) are much much better than the early jobs. Early ones always suffered from loads of road noise and general vibratory issues, they sorted it pretty well. Ride can be a bit sudden, but they don't handle badly and the brakes are bloody good.

I'm not sure if they still had two drivers electric window switches on the later ones. Used to be one on the door, and one on the centre console. The fuel gauges used to drive me mad in 'em.

Is it normal to have the horn for a 850R in either yellow or red with the graphite grey 5 spoke alloys? I'd love to have a go in one still, it was a poster car for me as a 15 year old.

Yes. Worth doing as well. I loved that T5 I had, but I wanted a yellow R.

Someone round here had a yellow R with the grey rims. Nicely lowered, always with good tyres on, and a 'Ring sticker tucked away in the back window. It certainly changed my view of Volvers!

Would a clutch change on the T4 be one of these horror story jobs?

Would a clutch change on the T4 be one of these horror story jobs?

Five or six hours labour in it.

i wasnt 'dissing' the 40 - just wondered

so its a mitsi with laguna engine, sounds interesting

how is the parts availablity?

Posted

Parts availability is fine, they're pretty good cars if they're looked after half-decently.

I wasn't dissing them, btw.

Eep, that's exactly what I was meaning. Same as the Mondeo. I asked, 'cos there's a guy locally sells old Volvers as a sideline to his main business, and he always has a few 40's on the go. Usually the 1.9D, mind you, but the thought of a T4 has piqued my interest, so to say.

I've had "The Moose" for nearly 2 years now, and it's never given me an bit of trouble.

I've upgraded the brakes, as Pete-M said, standard are good, but mine are better.....I thought the original ones faded a bit too quick for my liking, (mind you, the first time I really noticed it was thrashing up and down Porlock Hill!), so I bunged some drilled and grooved ones on, off ebay, and harder pads. About £300 all in IIRC.

I've heard horror stories about gearboxes etc, but mines done 102k, and has just been to a Volvo specialist garage for the full works, and they said that mines a good'un. (thank fook)!

Need to be aware of cambelt issues, it's an interference lump, and need to have the belts done regularly, every 50k I believe.

What would you have to do to build a V40 T4R I wonder? I've got a K&N 57i kit to go on, and I suppose a chip upgrade would be next.

Question is, where do you stop?

I thought it was a 4 cylinder version of Volvo's 5 and 6 pot engines.

No, I'm the stoopid looking one on the left!

I think the S40 are a pretty good looking car, especially the later ones with the more aggressive looking headlights and spoilers.

I've even looked at buying one before i got the Bora but I'm not sure what the diesel engines are like, I couldn't work out if they are even a 1.9 TD or just a non Turbo plus i think the dashboards look very dull, all that grey plastic looks a bit cheap and nasty to me which is a shame after seeing that good looking exterior.

You're not wrong, Milf, Renault used Volvo engines for a while (Safrane, Laguna..), therefore it's a Laguna engine as well.
